The United Nations said it had found “clear evidence” that war crimes may have been committed in Israel and the Gaza Strip in the recent conflict between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas.

The statement was made by the Commission of Inquiry for the Occupied Palestinian Territories, which is investigating possible violations committed during the conflict.

In a press release, the commission said armed groups in Gaza had shot hundreds of unarmed civilians and that taking hostages and using civilians as human shields were “war crimes.”

The group said it was “gravely concerned by Israel’s recent attack on Gaza” and the announcement of a total siege of the Gaza Strip. The measure includes withholding water, food, electricity and fuel, which the UN says “will undoubtedly cost civilian lives.” and constitute collective punishment.”

“The Commission urges the Israeli security forces and Palestinian armed groups to strictly respect international humanitarian law and international human rights standards,” the UN statement said.

In the text, the United Nations stated that the only path to peace was to “address the root causes of the conflict, namely ending the illegal occupation of Palestinian territories and recognizing the right of the Palestinian people to selfdetermination.”
