UN warns of acute famine for families in South Sudan

The United Nations (UN) said nearly 300,000 displaced people have crossed the border into South Sudanese territory since the conflict began in mid-April, most of whom have been repatriated.

One in five children of the incoming population is malnourished and 90 percent of families experience moderate or severe food insecurity, while a quarter of pregnant and breastfeeding women are malnourished.

After years of conflict, violence, food insecurity, climate change impacts and public health challenges, the number of people in need is estimated at 9.4 million people, according to the UN Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). need protection and help.

According to WFP, the rainy season is exacerbating already crowded transit centers and border crossings with flooding, worsening food insecurity and contributing to the spread of disease.

South Sudanese are returning to a country already facing unprecedented humanitarian needs, as many families in transit from Sudan fall victim to robbery and violence with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

Families now arriving are in an even more precarious situation than those who fled in the first weeks of the conflict, OCHA warned.
