Twenty buildings and regions in Ukraine are being given a new protection status in light of the Russian war of aggression. The historic center of Lwis is also included.
The UN cultural organization UNESCO has placed 20 cultural assets in Ukraine under enhanced temporary protection, taking into account the Russian war of aggression. UNESCO announced Thursday in Paris that it was also decided to train Ukrainian security forces and judicial personnel in the protection of cultural heritage.
Due to the destruction of cultural property in Ukraine, a special meeting of the Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict was held at the request of the country. The committee condemned the “serious damage caused by Russian missile attacks to historical buildings of cultural importance in Lviv, Odessa and Chernihiv”.
Cultural assets that UNESCO places under enhanced protection include the historic center of Lviv, Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kiev and the residence of the Metropolitans of Bukovina and Dalmatia in Chernivtsi. The special protection status allows those alleged to have destroyed these cultural assets to be prosecuted or extradited, UNESCO explained.
