According to current calculations, UNHCR assumes that there are more than five million refugees from Ukraine.

“That’s five million individual stories of loss and trauma,” UNHCR Deputy Commissioner Kelly Clements told a UN Security Council meeting in New York on Tuesday.

Millions fled their homes in Ukraine

António Vitorino, from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), added that around 7.1 million people had fled their homes in Ukraine. At the meeting, member states discussed the need for more support for refugees and an end to the war. It was the sixth meeting of the Council on the Humanitarian Situation in Ukraine since the war of aggression began nearly two months ago on 24 February. Its UN ambassador, Serhiy Kyslyzja, criticized the Security Council’s continuing to treat Russia as a full member. “Colleagues, it seems to me that these meetings are not going to change much,” Kyslytsia said.
