Six people died, including a baby, and dozens of homes were destroyed after a tornado struck the US state of Tennessee on Saturday evening (9).
Cities that recorded the tornado's passage included Montgomery, Clarksville and Hendersonville in the northern part of the state.
According to local authorities, in addition to the victims, dozens of other people were injured.
Photos posted on social media by the local fire department showed damaged homes with debris scattered on lawns (pictured above), as well as overturned cars and damaged buildings on a highway.
“This is devastating news and our hearts are broken for the families of those who lost loved ones,” Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts said in a statement.
In Montgomery, an emergency shelter was set up at a school and authorities urged residents to stay home.
Tornadoes kill three people in Texas
The tornado hit Tennessee at an unusual time. The end of spring in the Northern Hemisphere between May and June is usually the most favorable time of year for this phenomenon to occur, which depends on the ground being at a warmer temperature than usual.
However, two years ago, around this time, Tennessee was also hit by a series of tornadoes that killed 81 people in the Kentucky city alone.
