Unusually heavy rains in March affect Costa Rica

The third month of the year is usually dry and with high temperatures, but this March 2023 the weather has been humid and cold, which according to experts is a consequence of the climate change the planet is facing.

A report by the National Emergency Commission (CNE) points to 10 incidents due to flooding in major cantons such as Aserrí and Desamparados, the first being warnings of swollen rivers and the second the collapse of a sewage system.

The CNE attributes most of the reported flooding to poor waste management leading to collapsed sewers.

In view of the continued heavy rains during this week, according to the National Meteorological Institute, the CNE recommends that the population stay away from areas prone to flooding and landslides, evacuate to high and safe areas if necessary and avoid approaching rivers and streams, where this water level is close to the edge.

Also, during a thunderstorm, stay away from large open spaces, poles, trees, or metal structures, do not drive at high speed, turn on your lights, use the windshield wipers, and do not cross flooded areas, if necessary, go to an emergency shelter with your emergency kit .
