Valerie Bertinelli, Stephen King and Other Celebs Respond to Elon Musk’s Proposed Pay-to-Play Twitter Verification

Elon Musk has announced that he will be charging users $8 per month for verification on the platform.

Elon Musk has officially taken over Twitter and is already starting to roll out changes.

The Tesla CEO has announced that he wants to charge Twitter users a monthly fee of $7.99 to get a verified tick on the social media platform.

“Get Twitter Blue by signing up now. Blue tick: Power to the people. Your account will receive a blue tick, as will the celebrities, businesses, and politicians you follow,” the New York Post said in a statement.

However, just talking about these changes was enough to anger many celebrities and politicians, and now they are speaking out against Musk and his decision to charge a fee for verified accounts.

Valerie Bertinelli— who started trending Sunday morning for changing her Twitter profile picture to one of Musk — wrote: “The blue tick simply meant your identity was verified. Scammers would have a harder time impersonating you. That no longer applies. Good luck there!”

you later authorized that she didn’t intend to go viral for the tongue-in-cheek stunt and reverted her profile picture to one of herself.

“Okey-dokey I had my fun and I think I got my point across,” she wrote in a separate tweet, “I’m just not a ‘trendy’ type of girl. It never was, never wants to be. Have a safe Sunday everyone! xo”

StephenKing also interfered and first expressed his disgust in a tweet on Halloween citing a previous report that suggested Must would charge up to $20 a month for verification: “$20 a month to keep my blue check? F-k, they should pay me. If that rolls out, I’ll be gone like Enron.”

Musk replied: “We’ve got to pay the bills somehow! Twitter cannot rely entirely on advertisers. How about $8?”

Musk continued, “I will explain the rationale at length before this is implemented. This is the only way to defeat the bots & trolls.”

The story goes on

King then followed up with Musk not just once, but twice. First Write“Kudos to Elon Musk who has started a revolution in the way the world drives and who has incredible visionary talents. Got an early Tesla and traded it in for another. Wonderful cars (no autopilot for me , thanks). That is, when it comes to Twitter…”

In a third tweet, King wrote“Musk reminds me of Tom Sawyer getting the job of painting a fence white as his punishment. Tom convinces his friends to do the work for him and get them to pay for the privilege. That’s what Musk wants to achieve with Twitter. No no no.”

The representative of the 14th district of New York, Alexandria Ocasio Cortezalso had something to say: “Yo @elonmusk while I have your attention why would people pay $8 just to have their app bricked if they say something you don’t like?” This is how my app looks since my tweet upset you yesterday. What is good? Doesn’t seem very free to me.”

Markus Ruffalo also wasn’t afraid to comment on the issue and responded directly to Ocasio-Cortez, Write“Elon. Please, for the sake of decency, leave Twitter, turn the keys over to someone who is doing this as a real job, and continue guiding Tesla and SpaceX. They destroy your credibility. It’s just not good seeing.”

To what musk answered“Hot Take: Not Everything AOC Says Is Right”

In a tweet replying to Musk, Ruffalo backed up his point on why the blue tick is needed, Write“Maybe. That’s why robust dis/misinformation filters and credible verified users are a popular feature for people and advertisers alike. We need these safeguards to ensure the information is accurate or the app loses credibility, just like you. And people are leaving.”

Despite concerns, Musk still says he plans to bring the pay-to-play process to his platform, just not as quickly as he might have previously hoped.

According to a recent report by the New York Times, the Twitter CEO will only implement the new verification process after the midterm elections on November 8th.
