Venezuela’s political opposition reaffirmed this Wednesday (1) its support for the leader María Corina Machado (photo) as a candidate for the next presidential elections, also in view of her political disqualification and the invalidity of the primaries from which she emerged victorious. .
In a press conference, Biagio Pilieri, member of the Democratic Unitarian Platform (PUD) coalition, stated that “nothing and no one can ignore the results and their political implications,” emphasizing the importance of democratic factors.
Pilieri stressed that, despite the obstacles, Machado’s candidacy has a clear mandate from the Venezuelan people and that the democratic forces are led by her. According to him, with Machado as a candidate, they are confident of winning the 2024 presidential elections.
The primary elections to elect President Nicolás Maduro’s rival in 2024 took place on October 22 in a selfgoverning manner, according to organizers, with 2.4 million voters taking part. María Corina Machado emerged victorious with an impressive 92% of the vote.
However, Chavismo does not recognize the results and claims that the numbers are inflated. Venezuela’s governmentappointed Supreme Court suspended “all effects” of the primaries in response to an injunction. In addition, the public prosecutor’s office opened an investigation into the committee that organized the primary elections on suspicion of fraud.
