On September 8, the tenth day of the festival, three films were presented in competition: “Memory” by Michel Franco, starring Jessica Chastain, who wore a T-shirt that read “SAG-AFTRA on Strike!” commemorating the strike by American actors (THE PHOTOGALLERY). The board of SAG-AFTRA, the union that protects artists and actors, has decided to declare abstention from work after the collapse of negotiations with the producers’ union AMPTP. It calls for a new contract that provides for higher wages, protection against the unauthorized use of artists’ images by artificial intelligence systems and protection against the exploitation of works on streaming platforms. The actors have joined the Writers Guild of America writers’ strike that has paralyzed Hollywood for months. This is followed by Hors Saison by Stephane Brizé with Alba Rohrwacher, who said she was “so engrossed in writing that I laughed and cried among strangers,” and Kobieta Z (Woman of) by Malgorzata Szumowska and Michal Egert.
