Viewers praise big NRL final entertainment with ‘crazy’ Tina Turner as ‘something you’d see at Rooty Hill RSL’: ‘It’s embarrassing!’

Sunday night’s big NRL finals entertainment caused a stir on social media.

The stars of the Tina Turner musical Tina took to the stage and many compared the cover performance to something you would see at a local RSL.

“Looks like the NRL got its entertainment from the Rooty Hill RSL,” one person wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“This Tina Turner impersonator is seen at Rooty Hill RSL with a standard free drinks voucher.” “Fucking tragic,” said another.

“RSL Entertainment. “I can’t wait for next year,” agreed someone else watching at home.

“How can you have a tribute band as the main entertainment for a grand finale?” “F**k me this is embarrassing,” another person posted.

“This performance would have killed Tina if she were still alive,” someone else said, and another added: “Tina is rolling in her grave.”

“Worst tribute to Tina Turner I’ve ever seen,” agreed someone else – but not everyone was dissatisfied, with many praising the show.

“The @NRL is having a blast again with pre-game entertainment,” one person wrote.

“I completely understand people’s initial concerns when we have a musical as our opening act, but this lady is INCREDIBLE!!! “This is really fitting as a tribute to Tina this year,” said another.

“30 years ago I went to my first major rugby league final, dad got two tickets and I went with my grandma,” another recalled.

“Tina Turner absolutely stole the day. I think offering this year’s entertainment as a tribute to Tina Turner is a testament to what this game is all about.”

There was also criticism for the evening’s earlier performance, King Stingray, with viewers wondering whether the ARIA award-winning band had audio problems after key lyrics were missing.

The group covered the Australian classic “Down Under” by Men At Work, but kept skipping the line “You better run, better take cover.”

“Again terrible tone for King Stingray.” “Not good,” one person said, while another asked: “Did King Stingray forget the words?”

“King Stingray… bloody awful!” “How to butcher an Australian cult song,” wrote someone else.

“Epic of King Stingray failed.” Someone tell the old buddy in the red to put the microphone to his mouth, not his ribs. Seriously, was that a nuisance?’ another one posted.

“That was chaotic,” another complained, and one viewer said, “Maybe King Stingray should practice more.”

One added: “What a hatchet job from King Stingray. ‘Woeful’ and compared the performance to Meat Loaf in the 2011 AFL Grand Final, which was widely panned.

Several people wondered why the band, which has its own hits, did a cover song.

“King Stingray can’t even make them sing their own music,” one person said, and another agreed: “Poor King Stingray, they couldn’t sing their songs.”

“So many brilliant King Stingray songs and we only get one cover from Down Under?” someone wrote.

But there was also plenty of praise for the band, with one saying: “King Stingray are too good.” “Great performance from a great band.”

Someone else agreed: “How great was King Stingray’s performance in the NRL grand final. ‘Love it!’

“King Stingray makes land downunder.” “I’m crying,” someone else chimed in.
