Thousands of people demonstrate in New York in support of the Palestinian people
Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets in New York this Friday, chanting “Free Palestine,” including many Jews, to denounce Israeli bombings in the Gaza Strip in retaliation for the bloody weekend attack by Hamas, a group classified as terrorist by the EU Participants calling for the end of “Israeli occupation” and the “liberation” of Palestinian territories occupied several blocks in a city that unites religions and nationalities from around the world.
In Brooklyn, nearly a hundred protesters were arrested Friday evening as they staged a sit-in to block traffic after demonstrating outside the home of Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer, who plans to travel to Israel with a delegation of congressmen. The protest was called by the organization Jewish Voice for Peace to demand that “the genocide against Palestinians stop” and drew tens of thousands of people in front of a heavy police presence.
After more than two hours, they shouted slogans such as “The Jews say enough about the genocide of the Palestinians”, for a free Palestine or “Not in my name” in front of the house of the senator who was asked to mediate a ceasefire and um In an effort to save lives, the protesters moved to a nearby artery, where they sat on the ground and formed a chain, cutting off traffic.
As they refused to get up, police reinforcements continued to arrive and eventually bused the prisoners, ranging in age from 20 to 85, including two New York state elected officials, rabbis and descendants of Holocaust survivors. The mostly young demonstrators who took to the streets this Friday in different parts of the city and the country and of all backgrounds accused Israel of “genocide” and called on the United States to withdraw support for its ally in the East.
