A man in his 50s armed with a firearm described as a “long gun” by the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) is believed to be a public danger in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean on Saturday.

At around 2 p.m., the SQ launched an alert of an imminent threat regarding the commune of La Doré, a village of about 1,370 inhabitants north-west of Lac-Saint-Jean, about twenty kilometers from Saint-Félicien.

The suspect is said to be active in the Trenche River area near Lac Élaine.

“If you are in this area, do not approach the suspect, lock doors, stay away from windows and leave the area if it is safe to do so,” the SQ initially instructed on Twitter.

At the time of going to press, little information was available about the ongoing police operation. “We want to notify people so that they are safe, that is a priority,” said Hélène Saint-Pierre, spokeswoman for the SQ. More details will be released as the situation develops, she said.
