New York City’s new pay transparency law went into effect on November 1, meaning job seekers — and anyone else curious — can find out how much money some of the world’s best companies are offering their employees.
By law, companies hiring in New York City must publish salary ranges in good faith that include minimum and maximum salaries for all job postings, promotions, and transfer opportunities.
If a company has not listed their range and it is reported, they have 30 days after receiving notice from the New York City Human Rights Commission, which enforces the law, to update their job listings, otherwise they could be fined per violation up to $250,000, reports Jennifer Liu’s CNBC Make It.
While some big companies started including their salary ranges in job postings ahead of the Nov. 1 deadline, other employers appear to have stalled or tested the “bona fide” part of the law by publishing what many workers considered too wide publishing perceived salaries is enough.
For example, the minimum and maximum base salaries for a senior business planning job at Google are almost $100,000 apart. In the job ad, Google notes that the salary range reflects “the minimum and maximum target for new hires for the position in all US locations,” adding that an individual’s salary ultimately depends on the job location and additional factors such as skills, experience, and… training is determined.
