Google is now the default search engine for Safari and all Apple devices, such as iPhones. But this partnership is costing the Mountain View giant and is currently the subject of new investigations by American competition authorities. However, a document as part of this investigation has just revealed that Apple has seriously considered forgoing the world number one and turning to an alternative: DuckDuckGo.
DuckDuckGo is a search engine that particularly emphasizes its promise of privacy, although Google makes no secret of selling our personal data to the highest bidder. This more secure value proposition reflects Apple’s numerous communications campaigns, which in turn advocate the defense of anonymity. In our opinion, a collaboration between Tim Cook’s company and this search engine would make perfect sense. But it’s not so fast that we can claim it…
There is nothing certain on the horizon
Although discussions between DuckDuckGo and Apple have taken place more than twenty times, no agreement has been confirmed between the two parties. An Apple company executive does not see this possible collaboration very positively and considers it a “bad idea”. In any case, these are the comments of the American press agency Bloomberg, which is often very well informed when it comes to knowing Cupertino’s secret projects. Its journalist Mark Gurman is one of the most visited investors who have bet on AAPL shares on Wall Street.
Specifically, DuckDuckGo works very similarly to the Google search engine, with similar functionalities. But the outsider obviously doesn’t have the resources of the market leader; the deal between it and Apple easily amounts to several billion dollars per year.
Law in focus
Despite all this, lawmakers on the other side of the Atlantic may soon force Apple to offer a choice of search engine when you first turn on Safari on the Mac or iOS on the iPhone. And that would be anything but a first, as officials have already forced Microsoft to do the same on its own computer operating system, namely: Windows.
And you, which search engine do you use most often? And why this choice? Don’t hesitate to let us know what you think in the comments.
