The death of Atiq Ahmed was broadcast live on a television channel in India on Saturday night the 15th. Alongside his brother Ashraf, the former Indian politician was speaking to reporters when a person approached, put a gun to his head and fired. Ashraf was also killed by the gunfire.

The episode happened in the city of Prayagraj in the state of Uttar Pradesh in the north of the country. Three suspects posing as journalists turned themselves in after the deaths of the former politician and his brother, who were handcuffed on their way to a medical examination.

Atiq Ahmed was a member of the Indian Parliament from 2004 to 2009 and won his first election in 1989. He faced more than 100 criminal charges, including murder, kidnapping, and racketeering convictions.

Last month, Ahmed was sentenced to life imprisonment for a kidnapping charge. The crime happened in 2006.

The death of the former Indian politician came while he was speaking to journalists last week about the death of his teenage son. The young man was killed by government sources. Asad was suspected of being a key witness in the death of a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) lawyer. “They didn’t take me, so I couldn’t go,” Ahmed explained of not being present at his son’s funeral before he was killed.
