Near the largest iceberg in the world, whose movement was detected last Friday, the island of Joinville takes its name for the same reason as the town of Santa Catarina: it refers to the Prince of Joinville (18181900), who married Princess was Dona Francisca (18241898), daughter of Dom Pedro 1º. Satellite images have shown the island in Antarctica to be near A23a, a gigantic block of ice that is moving again after it “ran aground” shortly after breaking off the coast of Antarctica in 1986 .

The iceberg is several times larger than the uninhabited island of Joinville, which is 64 km long and 20 km wide. The ice block has an area of 3,900 km2 (the municipality of Joinville has 1,200 km2). The movement is towards the South Atlantic. Winds and ocean currents help the iceberg move.
The island of Joinville is part of the archipelago of the same name and was discovered in 1838 during a French expedition under the command of Captain Jules Dumont d’Urville. The name was named after the Prince of Joinville, the third son of the then King of France, Louis Philippe one of the other islands in the archipelago is named after Captain d’Urville.
With the abdication of the King of France in the Revolution of 1848 and the family’s move to England, the Prince of Joinville signed an agreement in 1849 to colonize part of the country from the dowry he had received in his marriage to Dona Francisca. The Dona Francisca colony, from which the town of Joinville emerged, began to receive the first immigrants from Europe in 1851.
