Will Smith relaxes at sea in first post since Jada Pinkett Smith announced they’ve been separated for seven years: ‘Notifications off’

Will Smith enjoyed a trip to sea on Sunday, taking to Instagram for the first time since his estranged wife Jada Pinkett Smith announced they have been separated for seven years.

The 55-year-old star was spotted on a boat days after his wife of 25 years, 52, spoke publicly about their marital estrangement; and he followed up on Sunday with his own comments on the situation.

The Oscar-winning actor was seen sleeping in the boat’s cabin as the voiceover said, “Fun fact about me – I can take a nap almost anywhere,” while several phone notifications sounded simultaneously.

The Philadelphia native, who captioned the post “Notifications off,” was then seen smiling on the deck of the boat as the vessel cruised along at sea.

In the clip, Smith wore a black puffy coat, black athletic pants, and white and brown Nike sneakers.

Smith said in an email published Saturday in The New York Times that Pinkett Smith’s recent comments about their relationship were a wake-up call for him, adding that she was “more resilient, smarter and more compassionate” than he realized has been.

The “King Richard” star told the newspaper in an email: “When you’ve been with someone for more than half your life, a kind of emotional blindness sets in.”

“And it is all too easy to lose sensitivity to their hidden nuances and subtle beauties.”

Pinkett Smith, whose memoir “Worthy” comes out Tuesday, told Hoda Kotb on the Today show last week that her marriage to Smith collapsed at a crossroads seven years ago.

“I think when we got to 2016 we were just exhausted from trying,” Pinkett Smith said on the show. “I think we were both kind of still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be.”

She continued: “I promised that there would never be a reason for us to get a divorce. “We will get through anything. And I just haven’t been able to break that promise.’

Smith is more than a year and a half removed from his infamous incident at the 2022 Oscars, in which he slapped comedian Chris Rock after he made a joke about Pinkett Smith’s shaved head and said, “Jada, I love you, GI Jane 2.” “‘I can’t wait to see it!’

The reference was to the 1997 film in which Demi Moore was seen with a shaved head. (Pinkett Smith was diagnosed with alopecia, which causes hair loss.)

Smith then went on stage and punched Rock, then returned to his seat and yelled at him twice, “Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth!” in front of a stunned audience.

Later that evening – in his acceptance speech after winning the best actor Oscar for his role as tennis patriarch Richard Williams in “King Richard” – Smith apologized to the Academy and other nominees but made no mention of Rock.

Smith subsequently apologized repeatedly for the incident and resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences before being given a ten-year Oscar ban.

In an apology he posted in an online clip in July 2022 for the incident, Smith said his spouse had “nothing to do with” his attack on Rock.

“I made my own decision based on my own experiences and my history with Chris,” he said. “I would like to apologize to my children and family for the heat I have brought upon all of us.”

He added: “I reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he’s not ready to talk and when he is, he’ll come forward. “So I’m telling you, Chris, I apologize with you. “My behavior was unacceptable and I am always here for you when you are ready to talk.”
