Microsoft plans to release a new Windows 11 “Moment” update in the coming days. It is offered as part of the optional September 2023 updates.
The software giant is expected to introduce several things, including a preview version of Copilot, the AI-powered assistant, and changes to File Explorer. Copilot will be the “big” news as it promises to make the operating system smarter by combining Bing Chat and operating system-specific commands. On the other hand, you must first prepare for simple actions. Redmond says Copilot will be included in the next version of Windows 11, 23H2, expected in the fourth quarter of this year.
Yusuf Mehdi, Vice-President Corporate and Chief Marketing Officer, explained that the goal is to unify the various editions of the assistant tested last year. He promises that
Copilot uniquely integrates the context and intelligence of the web, your work data, and what you’re doing on your PC to provide better support – with your privacy and security at the forefront.
The assistant will be available in Windows 11, Edge, the Bing search engine and Microsoft 365. It will later be expanded to include other products and services.
Note that when it comes to Windows 23H2, Mehdi highlighted that the feature update includes “more than 150 new features,” making it one of Microsoft’s “most ambitious” updates.
Moment 4 for Windows 11, what’s new?
Among the long list of new features we can list the following advances
- Use of the copilot assistant,
- Paint updated with AI, background removal feature, preview of Cocreator which introduces generative AI to the app,
- Updated photos with new AI features, such as background blur and improved search,
- Improved screenshot tool with support for extracting text from images,
- Clipchamp auto-compose video editor that “assists you with scene suggestions, edits, and narration.”
- Notepad with automatic session recording,
- The new Outlook for Windows, which replaces Calendar and Mail.
- Several changes and improvements to File Explorer,
- The new Windows backup tool, mainly associated with the Onedrive service,
- New voice access copywriting experiences and new natural voices in Narrator.
All of this sets a direction for the future of Windows 11 and Windows more generally. The operating system will continue to evolve with the introduction of more and more AI-powered tools and services.
The next Moments update (at least its content) will be available next week (September 26th) as an optional update. If all goes as planned, this content will be widely delivered during Patch Tuesday in October 2023. We don’t know whether Microsoft is also planning to launch Windows 11 23H2 at the same time.
