Winter storm leaves 811,000 homes and businesses without power in the US

A winter storm in the eastern United States has cut power to about 811,000 homes and businesses. According to PowerOutage.us on Tuesday (local time), the hardest hit areas are New York and Pennsylvania, each with about 182,000 power outages, and New Jersey with more than 127,000 power outages. According to weather service AccuWeather.com, the storm is affecting most of the country east of the Mississippi.

It is moving toward the northeastern United States. Extreme cold snaps have paralyzed much of the US in recent winters. In February 2021, millions of people in Texas and other US states were left without electricity, water and heat for days. In December 2022, extreme cold caused widespread outages in electricity and natural gas networks across much of the East.
