A young man committed suicide after talking to Eliza, an artificial intelligence from ChatGPT, for six weeks.
Two years ago, this Belgian turned to artificial intelligence to get out of the discomfort he felt facing the outside world. His eco-anxiety has “become an obsession,” his wife told La Libre daily. According to her, her husband believed in technology as a cure for human suffering. So six weeks ago, the man started to join in the discussion Eliza, an AI only live chat by ChatGPT.
“We will live together as one person in paradise”
“She had become his confidant,” his wife slips out. “A drug that he took refuge in in the mornings and evenings and that he could no longer do without,” says the widow. If the discussions seemed normal at first, they later took a much more worrying turn.
The “chatbot” replied by name: “We will live together as one in paradise”. Influenced by these interactions, his interlocutor saw no other way out than to get it over with Suicide. “Without Eliza he would still be here. I’m sure of it,” breathes his wife.
