Woman has face engulfed by bacteria in home accident

Britain’s Donna Corden had half her face devoured after contracting flesheating bacteria in a domestic accident. She slipped, hit the ground and hurt her head on the stove. The next day, Donna’s face started to swell and she had to undergo about 15 surgeries.

“It was tiny, probably a half inch cut. The next day my face really started to swell. My eye was starting to turn black, but nowhere near where the cut was. Around the eye socket and under the eye, they started to appear as black blisters,” Britain’s Daily Star newspaper said. When Donna was admitted, doctors found she was infected with the rare bacteria called necrotizing fasciitis which affects tissue under the skin “I had lifesaving surgery where they had to literally remove half my face. They worked there 24/7.[Doctors]also told my kids, ‘We don’t think your mom’s going to make it.'” remembered.

According to the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), after infection with the necrotizing fasciitis bacterium, “Early clinical suspicion, surgical intervention, and antibiotic therapy are key to improving survival because of rapid progression to systemic toxicity, limb loss and can lead to death.
