UN: More than 20 million people in Sudan are affected by severe hunger

The latest analysis of the Integrated Phase Classification – Protocols to Combat Food Insecurity – found that 20.3 million people in the country suffer from this scourge, accounting for 42 percent of the total population.

According to this data, 6.3 million people, the highest number of Sudanese ever recorded, are just one step away from famine.

In response, the program plans to provide emergency food and nutrition assistance to approximately 6.5 million people, but access restrictions limit these plans.

To date, the UN organization has provided essential food to more than three million people since the conflict began.

However, the organization believes much more could be achieved with the unlimited access it demands.

Without help, there is a significant risk that the population will fall into even greater famine and threaten famine, according to a WFP press release.

For its part, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) reported on Friday that more than eight thousand people had fled Sudan to neighboring Chad in the last week alone.

UNHCR warned that the figure was likely an underestimate due to problems registering new arrivals.

Working with the government and its partners on the ground in Chad, the agency is preparing for the arrival of additional refugees as the conflict in Sudan continues.

More than 800 people have been killed by armed groups in Ardamata in West Darfur, an area previously considered less affected by the conflict.
