Gunman killed ten people in Montenegro

Shock and sadness in the small Adriatic country: a man first shot two children and their mother – and then seven passersby. Before a passerby killed him.

A gunman killed ten people in the small Montenegrin town of Cetinje on Friday and was killed by a passerby. According to the prosecutor on duty Andrijana Nastic, according to the portal “vijesti.me”, two children were among the fatal victims. The 34-year-old assailant’s motives are unclear.

Another six injured were taken to hospitals. Three of them were in danger of death, said the director of the Clinical Center of Montenegro (KCCG), Ljiljana Radulovic. One of the injured was released home shortly afterwards.

The author shot himself with a hunting rifle

The perpetrator first shot two children aged eight and 10 with a hunting rifle, said local police chief Zoran Brdjanin. He then shot the children’s mother, who later died in hospital. The family lived as a tenant in an apartment belonging to the perpetrator. The perpetrator then apparently shot indiscriminately at bystanders in the street with the same gun, killing seven. A policeman was also injured.

“We are all shocked,” Prime Minister Dritan Abazovic said, according to Montenegrin state television. The killing was an “unprecedented tragedy”. The medieval town of Cetinje, located 27 kilometers west of the capital Podgorica, is considered the cultural and historical center of Montenegro and was the country’s capital from the late 15th century until 1918.
