A 21-year-old young man who admitted wanting to “kill” “Queen” Elizabeth II with a crossbow at Windsor Castle on Christmas Day 2021 was sentenced to nine years in prison in London on Thursday.
Jaswant Singh Chail, who suffers from psychiatric disorders, was arrested near the residence of the then 95-year-old ruler on the morning of December 25, 2021, his face covered with a metal mask and carrying a crossbow.
He will remain in a psychiatric hospital until his condition allows him to be transferred to prison, according to Judge Nicholas Hilliard’s “hybrid” ruling.
The Queen was residing at the castle at the time amid the Covid-19 pandemic and was there for the year-end celebrations with other members of the royal family, including Charles, who became king in September last year following the death of Elizabeth II.
When he was arrested, he told police after entering the outside area of the castle that he was “there to kill the queen.” He was then admitted to the psychiatric ward.
Jaswant Singh Chail, charged under the extremely rare Treason Act, pleaded guilty in February to “intentionally producing or possessing a loaded crossbow with intent to injure the person of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.” to injure or harm Her Majesty.” .
He also pleaded guilty to threatening to kill and illegal possession of a firearm.
