Fatal Shot: Student fired after catching wrong dorm door

A 20-year-old man who had just moved into a dorm in preparation for the start of term at the University of South Carolina was shot dead early Saturday morning after entering the wrong door.

“Preliminary information indicates that Donofrio, who lived on South Holly Street, was trying to enter the wrong house when he was fatally shot,” South Carolina’s Columbia Police Department (CPD) said in a statement Saturday.

According to the New York Post, Nicholas Anthony Donofrio, 20, was reportedly shot and killed around 2 a.m. shortly after police received a call about a burglary at an off-campus dorm.

However, before the police arrived, the incident would have turned tragic when shots were fired in the direction of the young man, who was fatally shot in the chest.

His death was noted by police on the porch, a police press release said.

His parents told News8 that the kinesiology student was keen to move into his new dorm with four friends for the just-started fall semester at the University of South Carolina. The Mirror reported last Thursday.

It is not currently known if charges have been filed against the shooter, but the investigation continues to shed light on the circumstances of the incident, police concluded.
