I cant wait for the end of the campaign

I can’t wait for the end of the campaign |

Yesterday I rushed to the polling stations, eager to vote in advance. Because I admit that this campaign, while shorter than so many others in the past, seems endless to me.

This is certainly due to the state in which the pandemic has plunged us all. During two long years of confinement, living in a climate where the fear of contracting COVID has significantly altered our human relationships, the other has become a threat to be wary of. It traumatized us more or less. No more kisses, no more handshakes, no more hugs we gave to our children and grandchildren who had become suspicious themselves. “I can’t touch you grandma,” my four-year-old Rose told me.

And now the choice of date has prevailed. At a time when anger, rage, mental disorders, excesses of all kinds dominate the headlines every day. An election campaign is inevitably a time of argument, division, and accusation from party leaders. But this time we must recognize that what has been happening for the past three weeks breaks with what we have come to expect in Quebec.

CAQ’s dominance in the polls is so strong that one understands why the four other parties, two of which, QS and the PCQ, are radical parties, are desperate for new support to play a significant role in the ‘National Assembly.

forgiveness

The first televised debate revealed the level of aggressiveness, aggressiveness, disrespect and verbal excesses present in today’s political debates. It was an oppressive evening for Quebec and exhausting for citizens eager to evaluate the candidates and their program. We all emerged from this debate as losers.

The political leaders themselves were shocked and no doubt very uncomfortable at having engaged in such a spectacle. The debate on Radio-Canada, thank God, proceeded according to the rules of civility and politeness.

But the damage has been done, and the blanket statements in which they accuse each other of being sleazy, liars and cheats have helped to devalue the political institution itself.

  • If you want more, listen to this segment by Denise Bombardier aired live on radio every week over QUB radio :

entertainment

If we thought the televised debates were over, we were wrong. The party leaders, anxious to reach voters, all agreed to rally to the TLMEP mainstream and confide in Guy A. Lepage, the undisputed and immensely talented king of entertainment television.

Lepage pulled off the smoking gun to interrogate her on his own terms, adding the presence of cowboy MC Gilles. He treated the five chiefs from the top of his superlatives.

Some non-political journalists even noted that the politicians were relaxed, fun, and overall happy to bow to the always-trapped questions of the host and his pal.

It is therefore an entertaining spectacle that the five leaders ended their fight. With a smile that was almost permanent from François Legault, laughter and antics of which only Guy A. Lepage emerged victorious, who as a bonus had the last word.

So politics quickly leads to show business. Terrible!

LA Galaxy will face LAFC in the Rose Bowl as the opening game of the 2023 MLS season

The LA Galaxy will take on LAFC in next season’s MLS opener at their former home ground, making it the first Los Angeles derby to be played at the iconic Rose Bowl.

Fans of both teams can already buy tickets for the game in February 2023 from October 28th. The clash between two MLS rivals at the 11th largest stadium in the US (also 16th largest arena in the world) has the potential to set a new league attendance record.

The Rose Bowl can accommodate up to 92,542 fans and the highest attendance at an MLS game was 74,479 in Charlotte FC’s first-ever home league game, which they lost 1-0 to Galaxy at Bank of America Stadium.

“We thought about it for a while. And even consider working with LAFC,” Galaxy President Chris Klein told the LA Times. “This game has such a special meaning for the city, our fans and football in this country.”

Both LA teams will play each other three times next season – one of which is scheduled to be played at LAFC’s Banc of California Stadium, while the other two games will be home games for the Galaxy.

The home team would not have offered to play in the Rose Bowl unless they also got a regular home game at its Dignity Health Sports Park, an unidentified Galaxy spokesman told the LA Times.

“It takes us back to our homeland and where we started and we’re driving what we think can be a spectacular event for football in Los Angeles,” Klein said of next season’s opener at the Rose Bowl.

In 2003, the Galaxy moved to the 27,000-capacity Dignity Health Sports Park on the California State University campus and has played its home games there ever since

However, from 1996 to 2002, the team played 127 home Rose Bowl games, winning 86 (67.7% win rate) of those games. The Galaxy has also drawn 32 times and lost nine games during his time in Pasadena.

The biggest friendly in the US since the 1994 World Cup also took place at the iconic football stadium as 93,702 fans turned out to watch Real Madrid take on Juventus in a friendly this summer.

The Rose Bowl, which hosted the 1994 FIFA World Cup finals, 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup finals and 1984 Olympic soccer gold medal game, also recently hosted 62,729 for last Saturday’s Mexico-Peru game.

“The common goal is to fill the space,” LAFC co-president Larry Freedman told the LA Times. He worked closely with Galaxy’s front office to make last year’s Rose Bowl a reality.

In 2009, the legendary stadium hosted the second-biggest game in US history with 93,137 spectators for a friendly between FC Barcelona and LA Galaxy.

“We just thought so [rivalry] was magical. If you could bottle it and sell it, you would, wouldn’t you?” Freedman added. “And so we felt like we should try. Because when it works, it’s magic above magic.”

The Battle of LA, also known as El Tráfico, has been around since 2018. In the first game of the crosstown rivalry in March this year, the LA Galaxy scored four goals in the second half – two of them from Swedish legend Zlatan Ibrahimović – to emphatically score beat LAFC 4-3 after trailing 0-3 after 60 minutes.

In total, both LA teams have played each other 16 times in all competitions (13 MLS season games, two cup games and one MLS Cup Playoffs game). The Galaxy have won seven of those games, while LAFC have only emerged victorious from those games four times. Five of those 16 games ended in a draw.

In 2024, when teams are expected to play three regular-season games again, LAFC will get the additional home date. Freedman said a location for this game has not yet been chosen, but the Coliseum and SoFi Stadium are among the candidates.

The Galaxy and LAFC are also expected to play each other three times in 2024. However, LAFC will be the team with two home games this year and Freedman said he has not yet chosen a venue for the additional home game, but the Coliseum and SoFi Stadium are possible targets.

The calendar for the MLS season for Galaxy and LAFC will be officially announced later in the year.

Premarket stocks: Ronald Reagan’s tax lesson for the UK

A version of this story first appeared in CNN Business’s Before the Bell newsletter. Not a subscriber? You can register right here. You can listen to an audio version of the newsletter by clicking the same link.

New York CNN store —

The British pound hit a record low against the dollar on Monday after British Prime Minister Liz Truss, a fan of “trickle-down economics”, announced on Friday a sweeping spending and tax cut plan to save the UK economy from recession .

What’s happening: Investors were stunned by the new government’s decision to introduce the biggest tax cut in 50 years while stimulating government spending and borrowing with inflation near 40-year highs. Citibank Analysts called the decision a “huge unfunded gamble on the UK economy”. Markets plummeted on the news.

But Truss took inspiration from former US President Ronald Reagan when defending her actions. The government “encourages companies to invest, and we also help ordinary people with their taxes,” she told CNN’s Jake Tapper last week, referring to Reagan’s Trickle down ideals.

So is she right? Let’s dust off our history books and see.

Interesting parallels: When Reagan arrived in Washington in 1981, inflation rates were nearing 10% and tight monetary policy had pushed interest rates above 19%. But like Truss, Reagan argued that massive tax cuts and deregulation would boost productivity, and he lobbied for a sweeping tax cut, which Congress passed that year.

The Truss government cites this as evidence that tax cuts don’t necessarily drive prices up. Under Reagan, inflation has fallen and growth has skyrocketed, they say.

But politics came at a price. The US Treasury Department estimates that Reagan’s tax cuts reduced federal revenue by about 9% in the early years. Meanwhile, unemployment continued to rise.

Congress concluded that the sweeping tax cuts were unsustainable. With the approval of Reagan, it raised taxes significantly in 1982, 1983, 1984, and 1987.

A lesson from history: “When tax cuts really are too big to be sustainable, they are often followed by tax increases,” wrote David Wessel, director of the Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy.

And in the short term, the UK is also at huge risk to its currency. The US dollar appreciated during Reagan’s tax cuts as it benefits from global reserve currency status. A strong currency helps curb inflation and makes imports cheaper. Britain, which is experiencing record losses in its own currency, doesn’t have that advantage.

The bottom line: The British pound is likely to bottom in three months, Goldman Sachs economist Kamakshya Trivedi wrote in a note Monday. “But if [tax] eventually policy does not change then we would expect sterling to continue to underperform,” he said.

This is bad news for markets around the world. S&P 500 companies with a global footprint have been hit hard by the strong dollar and weakening pound – about 30% of the sales of all S&P 500 companies are derived from markets outside the United States.

The last time Britain cut taxes that much, there was runaway inflation, a massive debt jump and finally an IMF bailout. “It’s hard to see how the pound can bounce back from here,” Fiona Cincotta, senior financial markets analyst at City Index, wrote in a note. “Investors are rapidly exiting UK assets and who can blame them?”

We know the British pound is falling against the dollar, but what exactly does that mean?

A falling pound is bad news for an economy that may already be in recession, my colleague Julia Horowitz reports. When sterling falls in value, it becomes more expensive to import essential items normally paid for in US dollars, such as food and fuel. That could stoke decades of inflation, pushing millions of households into a cost-of-living crisis.

Added to this is the rapid increase in borrowing costs for the state, companies and households. Investors expect Britain’s central bank, the Bank of England, to have to raise interest rates much more aggressively to keep inflation in check.

Fundamental tensions between the central bank and the UK government could also fuel volatility. As the Truss government looks to boost demand to ease a recession this winter, the Bank of England is trying to cool the economy so it can stave off the fastest rising prices among the G7 countries. That friction will reduce confidence in the way ahead.

“If markets still lack confidence in the fiscal picture, I’m not sure how the Bank of England can win that,” Mujtaba Rahman, Managing Director for Europe at the consulting firm Eurasia Group.

Global central banks are raising interest rates with no end in sight until high inflation is overcome, reports CNN’s chief correspondent Christine Romans. Here are five groups that are feeling the pain as a result.

IInvestors: Looking at stock market action over the last week, Wall Street is becoming aware that the Fed will remain aggressive. Bond yields are rising, making stocks less attractive.

Then there’s the fourth downgrade of Goldman Sachs’ price target for the S&P 500 this year from 4,300 to 3,600. That’s a whopping 16% cut. For equity investors, the darkness is palpable. The road to a soft landing seems to be getting harder by the day.

homebuyer: Mortgage rates have more than doubled from a record low of 2.87% last year to just over 6% last week. That’s more than $700 in monthly interest payments on the same home bought a year ago.

Last week, Fed Chair Jerome Powell told me renters would do the same feel the pain “Hope for the best, plan for the worst,” he said of rental inflation. “You just have to assume it’s going to stay pretty high for a while.

car buyer: The average interest rate for a new car loan with a term of 60 months was 3.85% at the beginning of the year. It is now hovering above 5%.

The market for buying a new or used car is still unbalanced due to supply chain issues caused by the pandemic. Higher interest rates make financing a car – if you can find one – even more expensive.

workers: Powell and the Fed have made it clear that they will tolerate, and perhaps even desire, a higher unemployment rate in order to cool inflation. The US economy has rebuilt 3.6 million jobs this year and regained all the jobs lost to the pandemic, but the Fed’s inflationary crusade could result in a loss of 1.2 million.

After leaving Bermuda and devastating the Caribbean, Tropical Storm Fiona hit Canada’s Atlantic coast hard on Saturday, September 24. During the more than 24-hour battle over Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador and eastern Quebec, wind gusts of nearly 180 km/h and precipitation of 190 mm of rain caused extensive damage: chalets were engulfed or gouged by waves over 6 meters high, overhead power lines and pylons that deprived hundreds of thousands of residents of electricity at the height of the hurricane, broken anchorages and shredded wharfs in ports… In Canada, Fiona caused the deaths of two people as of midday Monday was still missing in Nova Scotia one third.

After renouncing Japan for the funeral of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Saturday announced the deployment of Canadian forces to “assist in assessment and response efforts.” The first three hundred soldiers arrived in the Atlantean provinces. Before he goes there himself “in the coming days,” Justin Trudeau reiterated Monday that the federal government is ready to provide “financial assistance” to affected communities.

However, Mr. Trudeau did not announce any new, more ambitious measures to complete Canada’s national climate change adaptation strategy, unveiled in May, to protect those areas increasingly prone to extreme climate events. In September 2021, Hurricane Larry hit Newfoundland and Labrador. Two years earlier, Hurricane Dorian had hit New Brunswick and the Magdalen Islands hard.

“The Navel of the World”

In this Quebec archipelago in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Fiona will have the merit of validating the solutions implemented to resist coastal erosion, one of the effects of global warming. Indeed, over the years, the inhabitants of the islands, the Madelinots, have seen their landscapes change and become more vulnerable. Milder winters have shortened the ice age, allowing the sea to continually hit the beaches and weaken the dunes that make up most of the archipelago’s coasts.

As the sea surface warms, rising sea levels combined with increasingly frequent freezing and thawing events have eroded the East Coast’s crumbling red sandstone cliffs. On the island of Cap-aux-Meules in the city center, part of the pedestrian walkway collapsed in 2018, leaving the city’s hospital, retirement home and cemetery on the front line overlooking the ocean. “It is all the islands that are retreating under the combined action of all the climatic disturbances,” explained Fiona Mayka Thibodeau, deputy director of Cermim, the island and marine environment research center set up on the islands, a few weeks before the departure. CM Betting: Spain eliminated in Portugal, Sweden Slovenia and Norway Serbia… Calciomercato.com

It is difficult to explain how three days ago Spain put the revolver to the head and shot at Switzerland. They all knew that the Portuguese played their hearts out against the Czechs. So throwing away the Romareda match against Shaqiri and Co. would have been in dubious taste. Indeed very bad. And so Embolo exploded… the problem. Now we have to bring Portugal into a direct confrontation at home. And I don’t seem to mind. Since it’s not even necessary to remember when it happened (not in a friendly game), the pterodactyls were still circling. Luis Enrique will do anything to get into the Final Four, but it’s just that with all the guys on the field, it’s the hosts who put it down. There are four Xs – between the two, including friendlies – who needs to win this time could lose the entire stake.

Norway-Serbia and Sweden-Slovenia are carbon paper. But only in relation to the 1 of the prediction. Positioned like Spain, Serbia have the lead on points but lost the first leg at home. Secondly, there is nothing left but success for the guests. And we saw above when the situation is such that it can flip to the other side. It was Haaland’s goal that decided more or less the same could happen here.

As between Sweden and Slovenia, only a win would take the hosts off the bottom of the table. Bypasses the Slovenian after four stitches four in a row. If they don’t reveal that as well, the Swedes will leave their competitors behind. And that will happen to me.

PS Terno has posted about ten times. Which reminds me of something that very little has happened just now. We’re missing a bracket!

Portugal-Spain 1 (height 2.30)

Norway-Serbia 1 (2.40)

Sweden-Slovenia 1 (1.73)

A woman who went to the ER for bloating is stunned to discover she is actually SIXTH MONTHS pregnant

A woman who went to the emergency room for bloating and constipation was stunned to discover she was actually six months pregnant.

Abby Pollock, 28, a fitness influencer from Canada, has irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) – a chronic condition that affects the stomach and intestines – and as a result brushed many of the signs of pregnancy as symptoms of the condition.

She’s always had irregular periods, so she wasn’t concerned if she missed one — and she didn’t develop a bump in the first part of the pregnancy when she later found out the baby was behind her pelvic bone.

In June, when she began suffering from severe abdominal pain, bloating and constipation, it never occurred to her that she was expecting her first child.

She recently went viral after sharing her story on TikTok, where her video received more than 21 million views – and many people online feared something similar could happen to them.

“When I walked into the ER and joked I was so bloated I looked six months pregnant,” she wrote on TikTok, alongside a clip showing her heading to the hospital.

It was then cut to a video of her lying in a hospital bed and giving the camera a peace sign. She added, “Actually six months pregnant.”

Many people flooded the comments section with their thoughts, with one person writing: “No. Because I’m really afraid of it. ‘Cause I’ve been hella bloated for about 2 months.’

“Imagine if you only had three months to face the reality that you’re going to be a mom and your life has changed forever,” said another. Another user added: “New fear unlocked.”

Taking to YouTube, Abby continued to talk about her situation, explaining that she had a traumatic experience last December that was “mentally tough on her.”

“I lost my appetite, I wasn’t sleeping regularly, I was consuming so much caffeine, I wasn’t doing healthy things,” she explained.

“I missed my period in January, took a pregnancy test and nothing. I originally took birth control pills as a teenager because I had horrible, irregular, painful periods. So was it surprising? no

“I said to myself, ‘You’re not doing your best mentally right now, you’re going through it mentally. So even though it sucks, it makes sense. You’ve lost weight, you haven’t actually eaten.’

Then, in June, she suffered from severe constipation and felt “stabbing” pains in her stomach.

“When I started getting pretty bad bloating, I thought I was stressed,” she continued.

“That bloating then turned into constipation, which worried me. As someone who has worked very hard to become regular with my bathroom routine, it hasn’t been great.

“After a few days of not being able to go to the bathroom, it turned into sharp stomach pains when I tried to walk and when I touched my stomach it was rock hard.”

She and her boyfriend Jeff decided to go to the emergency room, where her doctor told her she may have “a bowel obstruction or an impaction.”

He then ordered some tests – including an ultrasound – and was surprised at what he found.

“The doctor says very calmly, ‘That’s not a bloat, that’s a baby. From the looks of it, this isn’t a small baby. At first glance, it could be a six-month-old baby,” she recalled. “The doctor was just as shocked as I was.

“The baby had grown from behind my pelvic bone, which explains why I haven’t shown myself for so long and then boom, I had a bump.

“When the baby got too big to fit behind the pelvic bone and tried to move out from behind the pelvic bone, there was probably a lot of stress on my digestive system, which could have caused a blockage.”

According to Abby, she had none of the stereotypical symptoms of pregnancy and brushed aside anything she felt related to her irritable bowel syndrome or stress.

Though she was “shocked,” Abby recalled feeling the awe of seeing her baby for the first time.

Unfortunately, the doctor immediately had “concerns” about how the “placenta” formed, which she described as “devastating.”

“There was a full baby in there. It was crazy to see,” she continued. “But there have been concerns about how the placenta forms. Although this was a very unplanned pregnancy, it was devastating.

“One of my biggest goals was and is to become a mother, to experience that part of my femininity, to feel the power in my body, to feel the full range of my body, to feel the good, the bad, the ugly of carrying a baby and give birth.’

Mali's Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maïga at the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, September 24, 2022. Acting Prime Minister of Mali Abdoulaye Maïga at the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, September 24, 2022. BRYAN R. SMITH / AFP

When the Malian junta elected Colonel Abdoulaye Maïga as interim prime minister, one of the questions asked was: is there an embassy? In any case, the message he just sent to the UN was so unforgiving that it deeply divided Mali.

Addressing the United Nations General Assembly, Colonel Maïga not only detailed the junta’s successes against the jihadists and his country’s regained sovereignty, but also carried out a machine gun attack against a variety of targets on Saturday, September 24, quoting Victor Hugo. After months of bitterness and on the podium from where his predecessor had denounced France’s “abandonment of fleeing” Mali a year earlier, a new reckoning with the latter was expected.

But there was also the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the Human Rights Department of the UN Mission in Mali (Minusma), the President of the Economic Community of East African States Ouest (ECOWAS) and the organization itself who would allow themselves to be exploited, as well the Nigerian and Ivorian Presidents. “For every bullet that is fired at us, we will respond reciprocally,” he launched for those who might not have understood the tone of his vengeful and colorful 34-minute speech in French.

In Mali, the Philippique praised its author for what has been called “raw truths”, for his courage, his eloquence. But while dissenting voices have become rare since the colonels took power in August 2020, some have spoken out, suggesting authorities have better things to do right now than point at their partners or neighbors. “Mali’s voice sounds like a gong,” the government newspaper L’Essor enthused on its front page. “Many foreign critics of the transitional government had their ears ringing.”

“Xenophobic and racist remarks”

Conversely, former Prime Minister Moussa Mara (2014-2015) lamented a “belligerent tone”. “Multiplying slingshots and adopting an aggressive attitude towards the outside world are counterproductive” when the country has other concerns, he wrote. Since the coup of 2020, and in particular the second of 2021, which consolidated its position at the helm of a country confronted with the spread of jihadism and crises of all kinds, the military has severed ties with France and its European allies and turned to facing Russia.

Amid an economic slump, Mali is recovering from a six-month trade and finance embargo imposed by ECOWAS, but ties remain between an organization pushing for the return of civilians and a regime promising elections in 2024 after she retired from her original commitments. Mali is in an open diplomatic crisis with Côte d’Ivoire over the fate of 46 Ivorian soldiers arrested in July.

In France, Abdoulaye Maïga has made well-known allegations. He accused the Secretary General of the UN and the current President of ECOWAS, Umaro Sissoco Embalo, of their positions in the dispute with Abidjan; Nigerian President Mohamed Bazoum “is not Nigeria”; Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara used a ploy to win a third term.

“A shame for our country,” said Ismaël Sacko, leader of the Social Democratic Party. Zeidan Ag Sidalamin, a leader of the Tuareg community, was outraged by the “xenophobic and racist remarks” made against the Nigerian president. They have been widely interpreted as a nod to his communal origins.

“He shamed Africa”

In a publication on social media, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Youssouf Mohamed Elmouctar, “strongly condemned the content of the statements [du colonel Maïga]. The drunkenness of the Malian junta made him forget the sense of protocol and diplomacy.” “He has shamed Africa and the civilized world,” the minister continued, denouncing “the meanness” of the Malian leader’s statements.

Majority MP Mohamed Saghdoun, for his part, described Mr Maïga as an “elusive soldier” in his country. In a press release, the elected official criticized “the Malian army’s inability to protect civilians from “jihadist abuses” and urged “thousands of Malians to seek refuge in neighboring Niger since 2012.”

“President Bazoum has never uttered insults against the junta, let alone a neighboring country,” commented the private daily La Nation on Monday, which believes “this clumsy stance further discredits the Malian junta.”

The National Union of Workers of Mali, on the other hand, recognizes itself “in all aspects of the declaration” by the head of government. Colonel Maïga was appointed interim prime minister in August to replace civilian Choguel Kokalla Maïga, who had been hospitalized a few days earlier.

Colonel Maïga, head of the important territorial administration department, was and remained the government spokesman. With his grid on national television, he had become the messenger of the most blatant announcements and the most abrupt declarations against France.

With his designation, the two chiefs of both the executive and parliament are soldiers instead of parliament. The election of Colonel Maïga had nonetheless raised questions about the intentions of the junta’s head, Colonel Assimi Goïta: simple contingency or a desire for openness?

Colonel Maïga is not among the officers who violently seized power with Colonel Goïta in 2020. An African diplomat based in Bamako saw his appointment as “an opportunity to move forward”.

It happened last Sunday evening on a Ryanair flight from Liverpool to Palma de Mallorca. As the local newspaper Ultima Hora reports, the 35-year-old had started harassing the young woman, also British, who was about to spend a few days off in the Balearic Islands. First the big compliments and sexist comments, then the request to follow him into the toilet of the plane. The scene had not escaped the attention of flight attendants, who, after telling the man to desist, warned authorities.
