Whipped by the driver

On the day in question, the thermometer in New York reached up to 31°C. According to multiple media outlets, including NBC, the carriage driver repeatedly punched the animal to get it to sit up, yelling at it, “Get up! Get up!” Stand up ! Stand up ! Come on get up.” Ryder was eventually untied and police arrived to assist him, including cooling him with a jet of water.

“The New York Police Department [police de New York], takes the health and welfare of our four-legged friends in New York City seriously, and we’re pleased our equestrian officers were able to help,” police said. A pillow was even placed under the animal’s head, which was then taken to a veterinarian.

A neurological disorder identified

A spokesman for the Transport Workers Union, the union that represents horse-drawn carriage drivers, said the vet had diagnosed Ryder with equine protozoal myeloencephalitis. It is a neurological condition caused by a parasite that can be cured with medication. The animal’s heat and/or exhaustion were not induced.

The case of carriage horses is regularly discussed, particularly in New York. Former Mayor Bill de Blasio had unsuccessfully tried to ban the practice.
