Bar Balcão in SP could close its doors with the sale of property for building construction

Sao Paulo

About a month ago, the owner of the property on Rua Dr. Melo Alves from Jardins contacted Francisco Millan, Chico, to inform him about the possibility of selling the space to developer Paladin.

Weeks later and after the purchase is “virtually complete,” according to the facility’s owner, there is uncertainty about the future of the business that opened in 1994 on the same site, on the corner of Alameda Tietê. With its huge counter that occupies the entire room and is surrounded by high stools, the bar has become a meeting place for writers, journalists and visual artists.

Chico says he had a friendly chat with the developer and the company has shown an interest in the remaining bar. “Even though we’re on opposite sides of the border, we’re not at war yet,” he explains.

However, the owner says he’s only interested in staying if the bar stays open as it is and that’s still an option. “In this industry, the walls breathe, they have a lot of history. If you change everything, smoke out and leave everything brand new, it becomes a different place. And when that’s impossible, you have to resist,” says Chico.

According to him, one of the ideas came from a client who suggested the space be listed. “Then we’ll look for all fronts to defend ourselves, but we haven’t gotten to that point yet,” he says.

Closing its doors to make room for the construction of buildings, the bar is included in an evergrowing list of spaces affected by the city’s verticalization, such as Mercearia São Pedro, Oregon Hamburger Shop, TeatroD, Bar Caracol and the properties on one side of Rua Edson Dias in Pinheiros, where bars like Azulzinho and Kingston are located the latter closed its doors for good while the other merged with Meretriz, from the same owner and across the street.

Another case that had repercussions was that of the Espaço Itaú de Cinema annex on Rua Augusta, which closed in February.

Nightmarish summer at the top of the bridges

Motorists will need to be patient to take either of the two river crossings in the Quebec region. The Quebec Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility will be doing major work there for most of the summer.

The slip roads from the Henri-IV freeway to Boulevard Champlain and from Boulevard Champlain to the southbound freeway Henri-IV will be closed from June 27 to August 10 inclusive.

According to the MTQ, these barriers will come into effect during the holiday when a culvert is being rebuilt on Boulevard Champlain.

“This intervention is planned as part of the project to rehabilitate the junctions north of the Pierre-Laporte and Quebec bridges,” explains spokeswoman Émilie Lord in a press release.

Long detour

These major obstacles will force users to make numerous detours to move around the sector, especially for those who want to get to Champlain Boulevard from the Henri-IV motorway.

According to the route proposed by the MTQ, they must cross the Pierre-Laporte bridge and turn around five kilometers further in Lévis onto the Route des Rivières. To get to the exit to the boulevard, you have to take the car shuttle again.

The Department of Transport is therefore asking motorists to “choose an alternative route for their journeys” in order to avoid work zones.

Ukraine Russia War Latest Live News Putin grants Wagners soldiers

Sergei Shoigu, the Russian general and defense minister, who never served in the ranks of the army

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, the country’s longest-serving minister, is a great friend of Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin, who has repeatedly chosen him as a much-publicized vacation partner, and until now he’s had an uncombustible aura.

But his failure to respond to the uprising of Wagner Group mercenaries led by their leader Yevgeny Prigozhin dealt Shoigu a blow no doubt harder than the backlash of the Russian army in Ukraine for which he and the military leadership became responsible sharply criticized from ultra-patriotic circles.

Shoigu’s performance or lack of performance in this crisis has cast him in a bad light, but it is well known that Putin is no friend of quick decisions and certainly not under the pressure of events, so a sharp dismissal would come as a surprise.

Without having served a single day in the ranks of the armed forces, the 68-year-old defense minister, who is a civil engineer by trade, holds the rank of army general, the highest in the Russian ranks, earning his critics the “”cardboard in general”” nickname.

Amid the collapse of the USSR, which was accompanied by floods, wildfires and other disasters, Shoigu monopolized areas in the media and in 1994 his work was rewarded with the creation of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, which he held until 2012 after almost six months as the region’s governor Moscow he was appointed to the defense front.

Since then, the closeness between Putin and Shoigu has only intensified, which the Kremlin itself repeatedly emphasizes by circulating pictures of their vacations together, both in the summer, where they can be seen shirtless fishing, and in the winter, wandering around snowy forest. (Eph)

1687812384 Nashville you worry me

Nashville, you worry me

NASHVILLE | Nashville, you dressed up to host the trophy ceremony and the NHL draft. Your Predators are celebrating their 25th anniversary and you made sure we knew about it. You dress up by setting up a stage on your main thoroughfare for the Osborne Brothers to perform and hanging banners in the colors of the event from your lamp posts.

For a week you decided to combine my two passions: hockey and country music. The last time I saw you so pretty was when the Preds reached the Stanley Cup Finals in 2017. It was the same weekend as the Country Music Awards. You also proved back then that you are a hockey town. I was fulfilled.

NHL Draft: Nashville is no longer a 'well-kept secret' and a little sad, says our journalist

I still love you but you worry me.

I fell in love with you the first time I saw you. Love at first sight. It was November 2011. So much so that I commended you to all my relatives. On my subsequent visits I introduced you to my wife, father and friends who organized my 40th birthday party at your home.

But I haven’t recognized you for a while. I don’t know if it’s because of the pandemic, but you’ve changed. Take, for example, this large glass cube that houses the Apple Store across from the Bridgestone Arena. A hideous wart at one end of Broadway Street, the face that characterized you with its myriad multi-story bars.

Even your voice has changed. The same Broadway street that once crowded the country bands of Legends Corner, Tootsie’s, Stage and Honky Tonk doesn’t sound quite the same. You were probably scared of being outdated, so you gave rock bands or pop artists a little more space.

Luckily there’s still Roberts who reminds me of your roots and how you used to be different from the rest. The tunes of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, the fathers of outlaw country, are still present there.

It’s not just Robert’s music that reminds me of our beginnings. The famous $6 recession lunch (a junk sandwich, a potato chip, and a Pabst Blue Ribbon) reminds me of the good old days. But you see, inflation even affected the recession. Because a few years ago you turned my stomach by only charging me $5.

The parties follow each other

Still, you didn’t have to sell your soul to be loved. They had their own charm with the Country Hall of Fame, the museum dedicated to Johnny Cash, the Ryman Auditorium, the mecca of country music where the biggest legends of this music style thrived.

You now have your NHL team, your NFL team, your MLS team. Major League Baseball is also considering joining the party. Also, your reputation as a party girl is so widespread that bachelor parties follow each other every week.

It’s no longer a well-kept secret that hotels are springing up all over downtown. It’s proof that everyone loves you.

Deep down, maybe that’s the problem. Maybe I’m just jealous. I preferred it when I felt like I had you all to myself. Maybe I shouldn’t have advertised your charms to everyone.

Vacation overseas a journey through hell

“Serial killer” of the planet: He offers himself a lifetime plane ticket and travels 37 million kilometers

An American has been dubbed the world’s “serial killer” after flying 37 million miles on a lifetime ticket he bought in 1992 for $290,000 (about CA$380,000).

According to French broadcaster BFM Business, Tom Stuker bought his lifetime ticket from United Airlines almost 30 years ago and traveled more kilometers than Apollo 11’s moon voyage.

He would live like a millionaire thanks to the loyalty benefits he had accumulated from his many travels.

The 69-year-old American has visited more than a hundred countries. In 2019 alone, 373 flights were operated and 2.3 million kilometers were covered. The boss of a car sales consulting firm says he steals between 200 and 250 days a year, according to the BFM.

Without a lifetime ticket, Mr. Stuker would have shelled out nearly $2.44 million for 2019 alone.

The accumulated loyalty benefits also allow him discounts on stays, gift cards or simply rewards with the airline.

United Arilines even threw him a party to celebrate his 20 million miles.

Workers in the Olympic Park could go on strike this

Workers in the Olympic Park could go on strike this summer

Workers at Montreal’s Olympic Park have given themselves a five-day strike mandate, which they will use when the time comes to denounce the restructuring of their working hours, including an increase in the working week to seven days.

“Overall, more than 400 workers could go on strike this summer, disrupting the ten events planned for the summer season,” the Federation of Public Sector Employees (FEESP-CSN) warned in a press release on Monday.

This five-day strike mandate, approved by workers, will affect many industries, including administrative and technical staff, building maintenance workers and professionals such as engineers and lawyers.

Further strike votes would take place in the coming weeks, it said.

The main demands of workers revolve around the protection of working hours.

“I have four kids and I’m not the only one with commitments that mean I need a steady job! The work plan is an important achievement for the workers, we will defend it,” declared Nouhoum Doumbia, President of the Syndicate of Technical Offices of the Olympic Park.

“Not everyone can work evenings and weekends depending on the new jobs the employer gives themselves,” added Stéphanie Gratton, interim president of the Federation of Public Sector Employees.
