The American bison is retaking Mexico to fight climate change

Dozens of American bison graze the vast, open fields of El Carmen (Coahuila), a 140,000-acre reserve nearly the size of Mexico City. The country’s northern plains had forgotten the transit of the mammal, which was wiped out 100 years ago after decades of indiscriminate hunting and habitat destruction. In 2021, on the initiative of the Mexican cement company Cemex, the bison returned and roamed the grasslands, soil that accumulates large amounts of carbon and is therefore crucial in the fight against climate change. 19 bison have arrived at the reserve and there are already more than 90 in town. The mammal’s daily life makes it a fundamental player in the regeneration of grass vegetation and the maintenance of hundreds of species living with it.

“The even cutting of the willows [que producen los bisontes al comer] Contributes to increasing the diversity of plants on the ground. It also takes care of the regeneration of ecosystems by transporting and excreting the seeds from one place to another in its digestive system,” explains Rurik List, an environmental scientist at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM). The bison is a sober animal that unintentionally encourages other species to survive in the spaces it inhabits. With its 800-pound weight, it flattens the grass in its path, a change that helps rodents like the prairie dog, which need short grass to be wary of predators.

Cemex conducts various conservation initiatives to offset the impact of its operations. The company has more than 250 active quarries around the world and tries to minimize its footprint from different perspectives: by rehabilitating the exploited sites; They are prepared before they start work to protect their biodiversity and are encouraged to take care of areas like the El Carmen Nature Reserve, where they arrived 22 years ago. “Since the beginning of the reserve, a number of studies have been conducted to find out what works best. An inventory of flora and fauna was conducted to determine which objects of protection we must withhold. And an analysis was carried out to determine the state of the habitat,” says Alejandro Espinosa, director of the El Carmen Reserve.

1,000 kilos and 14 kilometers of walking

The bison is a calm animal that calmly walks across the fields. It is the largest land mammal in the Americas: it stands over 1.6 meters tall and can weigh more than 1,000 kilograms. Espinosa is still curious about the animal: “Did you know that a bison can walk up to 14 kilometers a day?” On their long walk, the bison scratch the trees to relieve the flies’ itch. The hairs released are used by birds for their nests, which in turn helps protect other species.

Their path through the pastures preserves the biodiversity of the area. “They urinate and pass their bowel movements. When they die, it’s 800 kilos of fertilizer to decompose. If they just died, scavengers feed on them too; and when alive they are occasionally eaten by wolves, less frequently by grizzly bears, and still more rarely by cougars. They are also a prey species,” explains List.

American National Bison Association (NBA) director Jim Matheson cites the American mammal’s game instinct as one of its keys. “The bison has never been domesticated and therefore retains its innate herding instinct, making it an ideal ruminant for reclaiming North American grasslands.” he explains. The UAM researcher presents the mammal as a “key ecological species” that has a large impact on the ecosystem in relation to its abundance.

A lung hidden in the plane

Cemex began restoring the protected area 22 years ago with the help of environmental agencies, universities, scientists and support from the United States National Park Service. More than two decades later, the landscape looks different. “Extensive vegetation cover was rarely seen, there were many stones, the whole process of overgrazing was just over. The square was divided into paddocks with fences. One of the first measures was the development of the countryside […] More than 20,000 hectares of grassland infested with bushes were restored and after several years of work we realized it was time for the area’s native species to graze naturally,” adds Espinosa. Bison were one of these methodically selected species. The company tried to select the specimens that were least crossed with other animals – in order to survive, they first bred with cattle. The result was 18 bison (three males and 16 females) introduced from other fields in North America.

Grassland is one of the hidden lungs of the planet. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) argues that these areas allow for the storage and sequestration of greater amounts of carbon than forest ecosystems, capturing up to 30% of the planet’s CO2. To these properties, List adds another: fire resistance. “90% of the carbon in grasslands is underground. When it burns, 10% will burn, but 90% will remain, which will grow again as soon as the rain comes. Unlike forests like those in the Redd+ program, which are used for carbon storage and whose carbon reserves are released into the atmosphere when burned,” affirms the researcher.

The National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Conanp) estimates that grasslands can absorb up to 45 tons of carbon per hectare. The reserve’s 140,000 hectares multiplies the figure significantly, theoretically reaching 6.3 million tons.

Rare in Mexico, iconic in the US

The Coahuila Reservation saw the birth of the second generation of local descendants this year, indicating signs of their settlement. Espinosa has counted a total of 94 American bison so far. The Conanp reports that there were between 30 and 60 million bison on North American territory 300 years ago, but by 1880 the population had declined to just over 1,000.

Matheson says the IUCN Red List organization, whose job it is to determine the possibility of various species going extinct every five years, has seen the bison stay out of danger. “The herd has not been in danger of extinction for several years, and the herd has proliferated in recent years on all fronts involved – private, agricultural, tribal and conservation. “I think the current bison herd is actually pretty stable,” he says.

The animal, whose existence was an important source of food and fur for the native peoples of North America, has once again set foot in the lands of northern Mexico. In just two years, its population has grown by more than 60 individuals, and its presence is boosting northern grasslands. “You have bison, you have grassland; There is grassland, there is carbon in the soil. You lose the bison and there is a loss of range,” List concludes.

1687757863 Save me is ashes

“Save me” is ashes

We live determined to be, to transcend, to become more than being and Andy Warhol’s fifteen minutes of glory are no longer enough for the fans, now we always want an epic and immortal life. Social networks propagate the stupidity of transcendence so much that we believe that a tweet with an opinion no one asked us for, a photo of our feet on Insta, or a choreography on TikTok are the passport to the Olympus of a fame whose circle is expanding has increased . it has shrunk so much that it hardly ever serves as a hula hoop.

After millennia of believing that exploring the world is essential to unlocking its mysteries, we have come to the point that the world only interests us in explaining it through our social networks and exploring it with the to photograph the Clarendon filter of our smartphone. False transcendence is a new drug.

More information

Save me had wanted to live outside of this addiction for 14 years. His insignificance was voluntary and conscious. Militant, if you allow me. And now that the program gets streams of ink flowing, fills minutes at social gatherings, and is a daily trending topic, it’s time to unravel the big secret: “Save me” is nothing. Save me is zero important. save me is ashes

Have you been accompanying millions of people for many years? Well, of course, enough to make him the leader and unbeatable over the years. Will it be remembered for a long time? It seems. It is important? No it is not. It’s irrelevant. And so does Guardiola and Messi’s Barça. Mass entertainment is what it has.

Save me was the most irrelevant show on TV for years. That’s why it was indispensable for many people, because trivial doesn’t mean useless. Just as a little exercise helps balance our sedentary and intoxicated lives, a dash of triviality lets us see what is truly transcendent. There are few important things and we need to be trained to recognize them when they happen. If everything is always important, then nothing is important.

Everyone chooses their own hierarchy of important things: fatherhood, work, family, sex, friendship, having a good conscience, making a mark, surviving… And on TV, entertaining those of us who don’t report, period. And we relieve life for a few hours with the firm conviction that people know what is important: their rights, a fairer society, a decent standard of living, looking to the future without fear, escaping backward steps… Spain It has changed developed to the point that our programs coexist in a grid with other very different programs and people choose what they watch and they also choose what future society they want. But I’d better change the subject, ’cause I’m getting important. And if at any point in Sálvame we made the mistake of thinking we were transcendent, the public eventually punished us for it. And society too, because puppeteers like us shouldn’t think we can mean business.

Save me was inconsequential and rendered the baskets meaningless. The program was never nothing, or rather, it was nothing in itself. It’s something I’ve always known, but I confess today that it’s not even the nothingness it always was.

The presenters and staff of The presenters and staff of “Sálvame” during the last program aired on June 23, 2023.Mediaset

Save me has been around for 14 years, people saw it and then took it off and put it on again the next day and took it off basically because it was there and had been there long enough to be familiar. It was the emergence of television, it was created, consumed, self-destructed and regenerated without leaving a trace. Save me was the meme of the day, session #69 by BZRP, the song of a summer that lasted 14 years. There was no plan, no goal. It never was. There was no desire to coerce, persuade, or indoctrinate anyone. Just to entertain with immateriality.

Save me was the invisibility of the widely visible. Save me didn’t force you to think, it allowed you to enjoy passivity for a while each day, it was the mental gymnastics that repositioned the levels of transcendence. It was consumed without consideration, like the air that keeps us alive. Like the foam of the days. It was pure entertainment. There was no more positive and inconsequential space than Sálvame and that is why the public made this necessary. For for many years, every day brought millions of people that sense of peace that creates emptiness, a family pleasure that many today regret losing. So we can only say: thank you.

And thanks to Mediaset for these years, for them it is the enormous intangible and immortal legacy that the program has left them. It remains an invaluable sociological portrait of leading entertainment. An inexhaustible joke, a soap opera with more episodes than any other, a never-ending reality show that had an ending…or it didn’t.

There are many who have fallen into the trap of the wrong meaning of Sálvame with poisonous criticism. We were the devil and also the god of television creation, but really we were nothing. Our audience knew it and they liked that best. There were people who needed an enemy and thought they found one in Sálvame, but we were the placebo for enmity. They were Quixotes and we were just windmills. It is impossible to fight against nothingness and this has caused a lot of fainting and bad moods among those who wanted to end the program in those years. “Save me” was never meant to be anything more than silly. “It’s just a movie,” as Hitchcock would say.

Swiss writer Robert Walser spent his life trying to be as unimportant as possible until he voluntarily committed himself to a mental institution. All of his work is a hymn to triviality: “The ashes are humility, insignificance, and worthlessness itself.” Can you be more inconsistent, weaker, and insignificant than ashes? (…) Where there is ashes, there is actually nothing. When you put your foot on the ashes, you’ll hardly realize you’ve stepped on anything. But be careful because where there is ashes there was fire and certainly… lots of passion.

Jorge Javier Vázquez, in the first Save me daily in 2009.Jorge Javier Vázquez, in the first Save me daily in 2009.

From time to time an article comes out saying that football dumbs society down to the point where it diverts its attention from the political, economic and social reality that the author believes is what really matters. But the truth is that one of the most valuable human qualities is idiocy, which is a way of saying irrelevance. Football, Sálvame, social networks and even journalism give us the necessary dose of idiocy to make ends meet.

Let’s not forget to be smart, but let’s not forget to be a little idiot either. Those who refuse to admit their idiocy end up wanting to destroy those they call idiots. The emperor, who is clever, ends up parading naked.

Done save me We go somewhere else with nothing, because one of the advantages of nothing is that it weighs very little and can be transported. We will continue to inundate Mediaset with new projects of nothingness and also bring that nothingness to Netflix where we will continue to claim a place of no meaning. Idiocy is our antidote to so much gray and ashes. ‘Cause we’re ashes, but we’ll never be gray.

Are we trying to transcend with this?

Maybe yes.

We do not know.

China backs strategic partner Russia after Wagner uprising challenges Putin

China backs ‘strategic partner’ Russia after Wagner uprising challenges Putin – Yahoo News

China has voiced its support for Russia after a short-lived insurgency posed the main challenge to the 23-year rule of Vladimir Putin, a close partner of Chinese leader Xi Jinping in his push for a new world order and strategic direction against the US.

A day after Wagner mercenaries strayed from their march on Moscow, ending a brief and chaotic uprising by warlord Yevgeny Prigozhin, Beijing issued its first commentary on what Putin had called an “armed uprising.”

“This is Russia’s internal affair,” a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said in a terse statement posted online late Sunday night.

“As a friendly neighbor of Russia and a comprehensive strategic coordination partner for the new era, China supports Russia in maintaining national stability and achieving development and prosperity,” it said.

Beijing’s carefully crafted public comment came shortly after the brief mutiny had subsided, as Prigozhin on Saturday agreed to withdraw his fighters under a deal with the Kremlin that would reportedly result in him going into exile in Belarus.

It also came after Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko flew to Beijing on Sunday to meet with Chinese officials, where both sides reaffirmed their close partnership and political trust.

China’s Foreign Ministers Qin Gang and Rudenko exchanged their views on “Sino-Russian relations and international and regional issues of common interest,” the Chinese foreign ministry said in a one-line statement on its website, which includes a photo of the couple walking by the page while smiling.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Rudenko also held “scheduled consultations” with China’s Deputy Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu.

“The Chinese side expressed its support for the efforts of the leadership of the Russian Federation to stabilize the situation in the country in connection with the events of June 24 and reiterated its interest in strengthening the unity and further prosperity of Russia,” it said Russian ministry said in a statement.

The story goes on

According to the Chinese reading, Ma told Rudenko that under the leadership of Xi and Putin, mutual political trust and cooperation between China and Russia has grown steadily.

“Faced with the complex and grim international situation, it is necessary to follow the important consensus of the two leaders, communicate in a timely manner, ensure the stable and long-term relationship between the two countries, and safeguard the common interests of both sides.” Ma was quoted as saying.

Xi, China’s most authoritarian and powerful leader in decades, has developed a close personal relationship with Putin over a shared goal of challenging the US-led world order. The two autocratic leaders declared a borderless friendship in February 2022, just before Putin launched his war against Ukraine.

Despite its claims of neutrality, China refused to condemn the invasion and instead provided much-needed diplomatic and economic support to Russia, a position that has alarmed Western nations, particularly in Europe.

As the devastating war drags on, Beijing is attempting to portray itself as a peace broker to restore ties with Europe – but it has also further deepened ties with Moscow.

In March, during the Chinese leader’s first visit to Russia since the invasion, Xi and Putin made a broad reaffirmation of their consensus on a range of issues – and their shared distrust of the United States.

“Right now there are changes – the likes of which we haven’t seen in 100 years – and we are the ones driving these changes together,” Xi told Putin as they bid farewell at the Kremlin’s door.

Three months later, Xi’s driving force behind Xi’s vision saw his seizure of power seriously challenged by an extraordinary display of defiance, shattering the facade of total control the Russian leader had striven for.

Wen-Ti Sung, a political scientist at Australia National University’s Taiwan Studies program, said the Wagner uprising “contradicts the narrative of Putin as a strong leader who has the full support of his people and is here as China’s long-term global partner.” ” of your choice.”

“If Putin’s rule is unstable, then supporting him is bad business,” he said.

Putin’s weakened influence had not gone unnoticed by even the most aggressive and nationalist Chinese scholars and commentators.

“Although Russia’s nightmare temporarily ended yesterday, this incident will definitely damage the image of Russia and Putin,” Jin Canrong, a professor of international relations at Renmin University in Beijing, wrote on Sunday on Weibo, where the Wagner uprising made a top -Trend topic was the weekend.

Jin, a government adviser known for his fiercely anti-American rhetoric, described the rapid turn of events as “surreal.”

“It is very dangerous for a country to support and retain such a large non-state military group – this ‘lesion’ can erupt at any time,” he wrote.

Hu Xijin, the former editor of the nationalist Global Times, commented on Twitter on Saturday before Prigozhin called off his uprising, saying the “armed uprising has caused the political situation in Russia to pass the turning point.”

“Regardless of the outcome, Russia cannot go back to the country it was before the uprising,” he said in the tweet, which was later deleted.

PwC Australia Accounting giant splits business after tax scandal

PwC Australia: Accounting giant splits business after tax scandal – bbc.com

Updated 1 hour ago

PwC Australia announces it will sell its government business for A$1 ($0.70; £0.50) following a scandal surrounding the abuse of confidential government tax plans.

The accounting giant has also announced the appointment of a new chief executive officer in the country.

In January, it emerged that a former PwC Australia partner leaked the classified information.

The ex-partner, who advised the Australian government, had shared draft corporate tax avoidance laws with colleagues, who used them to target potential clients. The leaks happened between 2014 and 2017.

The company said no confidential information was used to help customers pay less tax.

However, politicians and officials have called for PwC Australia to be banned from government contracts until PwC Australia has responded satisfactorily to the scandal.

Earlier this month, PwC Australia said it had identified 76 current and former partners linked to the scandal and turned their names over to Australian lawmakers.

On Monday, acting chief executive of PwC Australia Kristin Stubbins said at a parliamentary inquiry that staff found to have acted inappropriately face “serious” consequences.

“We have not met the standards that we have set for ourselves as an organization and I apologize on behalf of our company,” she said.

PwC Australia on Sunday appointed Kevin Burrowes as its new CEO. Previously, he was the global account and industry leader for PwC Network.

“He will work with his colleagues and the management team to restore stakeholder confidence in PwC Australia,” said Justin Carroll, Chairman of the Board of PwC Australia.

The company also announced it would sell its Australian federal and state government businesses to private equity firm Allegro Funds, with a goal of reaching a binding agreement on the deal by the end of next month.

The sale will create two independent businesses without “disrupting the provision of vital services to public sector clients,” PwC Australia said.

PwC Australia’s government business employs around 1,750 people and generates around 20% of annual revenue.

In May, Tom Seymour, the former chief executive of PwC Australia, resigned after admitting he was one of at least 67 recipients of the sensitive information at the heart of the scandal.

Later that month, the company furloughed nine partners and renewed its board.

Australia’s Treasurer Jim Chalmers called the revelations a “shocking breach of trust”.

According to official information, the Australian government has committed to contracts with PwC worth A$ 255 million for the current financial year.

Since the scandal first broke, major pension funds including AustralianSuper, as well as the country’s central bank, have said they would not sign new deals with PwC.

The awards recognize the year’s best performances in music, television, film and sports. The ceremony also celebrated 50 years of hip-hop throughout the show, which aired on BET from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. During the broadcast, winners were announced in only a fraction of the categories. (See the red carpet arrivals.)

The unhosted show began with a cast of artists including opener Lil Uzi Vert as well as hip-hop pioneers The Sugarhill Gang performing their groundbreaking “Rapper’s Delight.” There was also a tribute to the late Biz Markie with his “Just a Friend”. Other memorable moments included tributes to Tupac Shakur and Takeoff (the latter by his Migos bandmates Quavo and Offset), and a performance of Warren G’s “Regulate.” Tyga later took the stage to perform “Rack City.” The show also included a lifetime achievement tribute to Busta Rhymes, who performed a medley of his hits towards the end of the show, followed by an all-star tribute to hip-hop.

Patti LaBelle paid tribute to Tina Turner, who died May 24, with a performance of “(Simply) The Best,” but she forgot the words for a few moments. “I’m trying, y’all,” she told the crowd, before later singing, “Anyway, I can’t make out the words.”

Coco Jones took the stage to perform shortly after her Best New Artist award. Teyana “Spike Tey” Taylor was named Video Director of the Year and her mother, accepting on her behalf, video-called her daughter from the stage so she could make the acceptance remotely. Beyoncé won the BET Her and Viewer’s Choice awards but was not present to accept the award as she is on tour.

Before the cast of BET’s Sistas Latto presented the Best Female Hip-Hop Artist award, they expressed their support for the Writers Guild of America in light of its ongoing strike as it seeks a new deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers .

At the start of the show, Drake led the nominees with seven, followed by GloRilla with six and 21 Savage and Lizzo with five each. Beyoncé, Burna Boy, Chris Brown, Ice Spice and SZA each received four nominations. Warriors rumours Strong Confidence Draymond Green re signs to multi year deal

Warriors rumours: ‘Strong Confidence’ Draymond Green re-signs to multi-year deal – Golden State of Mind

The Golden State Warriors have some key decisions to make once NBA Free Agency begins this Friday. Their top priority will be deciding what to do with starting power forward Draymond Green, who is reportedly turning down his player option to become an unrestricted free agent this season. Still, the Warriors remain confident Green can still land a multi-year contract, according to NBA insider Marc Stein in his latest Substack article.

About Marc Stone:

I continue to hear nothing but strong confidence from the Bay Area that an agreement is imminent on a multi-year deal for Green to remain where he has always been.

(According to league sources, a three-year deal is a popular current prognosis for the 33-year-old.)

Green’s current deal is a four-year, $100 million deal that should net him $27.6 million in his final year. He will reportedly turn down that option in order to negotiate a long-term deal that would give him one last big payday.

The three-year term mentioned by Stein was circulated due to news early in the season when Green was discussing the possibility of retiring. During an interview with Stephen A. Smith, Green said he has no interest in playing into his 40s and would rather retire once he’s played 15 seasons in the league. With the 32-year-old Green already boasting 11 seasons of NBA experience, the reported three-year deal should hopefully see him finish his career with Golden State and the rest of the Warriors core.
