One dead and seven injured in carousel derailment in Sweden

One person died and nine were injured on Sunday after a roller coaster derailed at an amusement park in Stockholm, Sweden, the park and police said.

“One person is sadly dead,” Cecilia Björling, spokeswoman for Gröna Lund, the official name of the park that was evacuated, told AFP.

Nine people were injured and hospitalized, including children, Gröna Lund CEO Jan Eriksson said at a news conference. “It’s a sad day,” he said, noting that the park, which opened 140 years ago, will remain closed for at least seven days.

The accident happened on Sunday around 11:30 a.m. (local time) on the “Jetline” journey. Part of the front end partially came off, the train stopped in the middle of the track and the carriage in question leaned over the edge. There were 14 people on board.

An investigation has been launched, a park spokeswoman said.

“We received the alert at around 11:39 a.m. of a roller coaster that derailed and injured several people,” Håkan Eriksson of the Swedish capital’s ambulance service told AFP. Police and ambulances were dispatched to the scene of the accident.

The injured suffered injuries from falls, said Stockholm Police spokeswoman Helena Bostrom Thomas.

According to Jenny Lagerstedt, a correspondent for Swedish television SVT, who was at the scene, a Jetline attraction car broke loose, then fell from a great height, taking several people with it.

“Suddenly I heard a thud and a metallic noise, then the rides started to shake,” she told the Swedish broadcaster. “My husband, sitting outside, saw a car (from the attraction) detach and fall.”

“It’s unimaginable,” Culture Minister Parisa Liljestrand told TT news agency. “I recently visited the park with my family and I can’t even imagine what it must be like when the best day suddenly turns into a nightmare.”

The roller coaster “Jetline”, a classic at Gröna Lund amusement park, which employs around 1,500 seasonal workers every year, was inaugurated in 1988 and runs at a speed of around 90 km/h.

Sports series Rediscover champions

Quebec series impose themselves outside of our borders

Our TV scores. Increasingly. For a number of years, producers and broadcasters have recognized the importance of engaging people beyond our productions. No more complexes, no more language barriers, we invest and quietly establish ourselves as fertile ground for the union of stories that are well filmed, well acted and produced with modest means. Proof that talent and creativity abound in our beautiful province.

• Also read – Digital platforms: timeless journeys through time

This National Day weekend, I could have lauded the series from home that are catching the foreign eye and ending up on channels around the world. Some are discarded as-is, others are adjusted. The proliferation of platforms promotes exchange and visibility. In recent months, Newens Studio, which is part of the TF1 Group, has acquired the rights to the Complètement lycée in France. C’est comme ça que je t’aime was sold in the United States, Israel, France, Spain, Germany, Scandinavian countries and English Canada. Plan B received an English adaptation and was purchased in Germany, France and Belgium. When Audrey returned, she received a warm welcome on Canal+ in France and won over the Italians too.

I could also mention La Confrérie coming to France on the Playzer platform and in Belgium on Pickx+, …Me neither on 6play with our French cousins and A criminal affair coming to Australia, Latin America and the USA USA, Great Britain and Spain caused a sensation thanks to Olympusat. These are just the latest examples of a long, non-exhaustive list of achievements that have enriched our view of our production since the mega success of Un gar, une fille.

ambassador

The pride could also bear the name of François Arnaud, who continues to assert himself outside our borders. He joined Yellowjackets and is taking part in the pilot of The Judgment, a series for ABC. Sophie Nélisse is also an excellent ambassador who can be seen in Yellowjackets. Just like Théodore Pellerin, who was chosen to play Jacques de Bascher, lover of Yves Saint-Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld, in the Disney+ series Kaiser Karl. He can also be seen in the series Franklin with Michael Douglas on Apple TV. This pride could be named Karine Vanasse, Yanic Truesdale, Caroline Dhavernas, Suzanne Clément and a few others. Or even Jean-Marc Vallée, who left an unforgettable mark on the Hollywood television universe and therefore worldwide.

festivals

But here are other series that have represented us well at major festivals lately. Being present at a cutting-edge event creates conversation, draws the attention of others and, who knows, boosts sales overseas. It’s not uncommon for festivals to benefit from scoops. This was the case with “The Pearls” (since available on Club Ilico), “The Candidate” or “After the Deluge”. This presence ensures that a show’s quality is elevated, creating anticipation even before it hits our airwaves and making it stand out from a pool of productions with stiff competition. It is a first seal of approval, so to speak.

We do good shows in Quebec. By revealing our uniqueness, we recognize the universality of our challenges and become unifiers. By opening ourselves to the world, we give ourselves the chance to promote, nurture and be proud of our art.

New York City explodes in a rainbow of colors as partygoers flock to closed streets for Pride Fest

New York politicians were out in full force for Pride Sunday – after the NYPD announced it would beefing up security measures leading up to the event.

Among the mix of drag queens and activists who marched down Fifth Avenue were figures such as Eric Adams, Kathy Hochul and Chuck Schumer – three of around 100,000 participants who took part in the parade’s main procession.

This year’s march – the 53rd in the city’s history – is expected to draw around a million spectators and will feature around 60 floats, drawing attention to the LGBTQ situation not just in New York but across the country.

Other prominent figures attending the celebration included Reverend Al Sharpton and New York Attorney General Letitia James, who joined Gov. Hochul in taking the time to address members of the crowd.

Meanwhile, poor forecasts from not only the city’s police force, but also its meteorologists, both literally and figuratively, cast dark clouds over the celebrations — at around 2 p.m., a storm threatened to devastate Manhattan.

Meanwhile, however, local residents and revelers took advantage of the early-day weather and attended a series of outdoor parties that took place across the city.

Signs posted along the parade’s planned route, meanwhile, drew attention to the city’s “protecting LGBTQ+ New Yorkers” during the celebrations — a stance shared by Hochul and several people the city hired to run the event , has been affirmed.

This class also included this year’s Grand Marshals – activists Yasmin Benoit, AC Dumlao, Randolfe “Randy” Wicker, Billy Porter and Hope Giselle.

These figures, as well as the politicians mentioned above, all tried to support this year’s theme of Strength in Solidarity, despite a reported surge in anti-LGBTQ sentiment in recent years.

Always held in June, the parade also commemorated the 1969 uprising of New York’s LGBTQ+ communities, known as the Stonewall Uprising, while preaching the continuing importance of LGBTQ+ rights.

Greek elections: Mitsotakis’ Conservatives seek clear majority – BBC

Jun 25, 2023 at 2:25 am BST

Updated 2 minutes ago

picture description,

Kyriakos Mitsotakis is likely to win more than a month ago in Sunday’s election

Early results suggest that Greek conservative leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis is on track to win a second term as prime minister and a majority in parliament.

In May he defeated center-left rival Syriza but called snap elections to win enough seats to govern alone.

His New Democracy party won 40.4% of the vote, 20 points ahead of Syriza with more than half of the votes counted.

The vote came eleven days after the tragedy of a refugee boat off Greece that is believed to have killed 500 people.

Despite three days of mourning, the disaster had little impact on the election campaign and Greeks voted to maintain economic stability.

Under Greek electoral rules, a second election will give the Conservatives an extra number of seats in Parliament, but the exact number will depend on the final result.

Former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ Syriza party failed to ameliorate its defeat last month.

But there was success for the newly formed far-right Spartans party, which would appear to clear the three percent threshold for entry into parliament.

The Spartans only emerged as a political force this month when Greece’s Supreme Court banned another far-right party, the Greeks, and its imprisoned founder campaigned full force on them.

Greek commentators spoke of a “crime thriller” with several smaller parties trying to cross the threshold.

But the main theme of the election was that 55-year-old Kyriakos Mitsotakis, whose Conservatives had already beaten Alexis Tsipras’ Syriza by 20 points in the first election, widened his lead.

The New Democracy leader is a rarity in Greek politics, having increased his share of the vote since the 2019 election.

He is credited with successfully returning the Greek economy to stability and growth after a severe debt crisis and three international bailouts.

Though many Greeks are grappling with the cost of living crisis, voters chose to follow the party’s promises of lower taxes and better public health.

As New Democracy headed for a major victory, the left electorate was fragmented: the socialist PASOK garnered more than 11% and the communist KKE around 7%.

The Conservative leader has earned a reputation as a Teflon-coated leader who has fought off a series of devastating crises over the past year, including a rail disaster and a wiretapping scandal that brought down the intelligence chief and his own nephew, who worked there as the prime minister’s chief of staff.

Greece was being led by an interim government when a refugee boat sank off the southwest coast in the early hours of June 14.

Since the refugee crisis, the views of most Greek voters have shifted in favor of stricter, more conservative politics, says Panos Koliastasis, an assistant professor of politics at the University of Peloponnese.

“The reason lies in the 2020 migration crisis on the Evros [river], as Turkey tried to push thousands of migrants into Greek territory and the Mitsotakis government acted quickly. Therefore, much of the public perceives the migration issue as an external threat to national sovereignty.”

Officials Say Plane Engine Attracts and Kills Worker at Texas Airport – Yahoo! Voices

An airline worker is dead after being pulled into a plane’s engine at San Antonio International Airport in Texas, officials told news outlets.

A flight from Los Angeles had just landed around 10:30 p.m. on June 23, and while taxiing, a worker on the ground was “swallowed” into an engine, the National Transportation Safety Board WOAI said in a statement.

The plane is owned by Delta Airlines, and the NTSB said it was communicating with the airline as it investigates the fatal incident, KENS reported.

The worker is employed by Unifi, a company with which Delta has contracts, the company told McClatchy News.

“We are heartbroken and mourn the loss of life of a member of the San Antonio aviation family,” Delta said in an email. “Our hearts and full support are with her family, friends and loved ones at this difficult time.”

Unifi Aviation said in a statement obtained by KENS that “the incident was unrelated to Unifi’s operations, safety procedures and policies.”

“Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased and we remain focused on supporting our local employees and ensuring they are cared for during this time,” the company said, according to the outlet.

The airport said it will release more information as it becomes available, WOAI reported.

“We are deeply saddened by this incident and are working with the authorities as they begin their investigation,” the airport said.

McClatchy News has contacted the NTSB for more information.

Human remains found in area where actor Julian Sands went

Human remains found in area where actor Julian Sands went missing

Authorities in Southern California on Saturday recovered human remains near the mountain where search parties were looking for British actor Julian Sands, who was reported missing in January.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement that it was contacted around 10 a.m. local time Saturday by hikers who found human remains in the wilderness of Mount Baldy, more than 40 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

The remains were taken to the coroner’s office and are expected to be identified this week, the department said.

Dangerous conditions, including a series of severe winter storms and persistent ice and snow in June, made finding Mr. Sands difficult.

Mr. Sands, 65, of North Hollywood, went hiking alone on a trail on Mount Baldy. Hiking websites describe the popular hike as challenging and strenuous.

Mr. Sands has appeared in more than 150 films and television shows, including his best-known role as George Emerson in the Oscar-nominated 1986 film A Room With a View.

The film, adapted from the EM Forster novel, is often cited as one of the best British films of all time.

The Sheriff’s Department provided an update on the search for Mr. Sands last week, saying parts of the mountain are always closed due to “extreme alpine conditions,” including steep terrain and ravines covered with more than 10 feet of ice and snow could not yet be achieved.

On June 17, more than 80 people helped look for him. Two helicopter and drone crews were deployed to check areas inaccessible to searchers on the ground, the sheriff’s department said.

Since January, there have been eight searches for Mr. Sands and eight other independent search and rescue operations in the Mount Baldy area, the ministry said.

After Mr Sands was reported missing, the Hikers Department warned in January that storms in Southern California would create dangerous conditions in the mountains.

The department said it responded to 14 rescue operations for lost, stranded and injured hikers on Mount Baldy and the surrounding area over a four-week period ending Jan. 18. Two of the hikers did not survive after falling and injuring themselves.

On Wednesday Mr Sands’ family thanked the search teams.

“We continue to carry Julian in our hearts and fondly remember him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of nature and the arts, and an original and collaborative artist,” his family said in a statement.

In several interviews, Mr. Sands spoke about his love of hiking and the mountains.

In a 2020 interview with Thrive Global, a company founded by Arianna Huffington that provides behavior modification technologies, Mr. Sands said he spent time in mountain ranges in North America and Europe.

Mr Sands said people who didn’t climb mountains assumed it was a “great heroic sprint” to the summit and ego.

“But actually it’s the other way around,” he said. “It’s about supplication, sacrifice and humility going into these mountains. It’s not so much about celebrating yourself as it is about stamping out your self-esteem. And on these walks you lose yourself, you become a vessel of energy in tune, hopefully, with your surroundings.”

Reds Designate Silvino Bracho Pick Randy Wynne MLB Trade

Reds Designate Silvino Bracho, Pick Randy Wynne – MLB Trade Rumors

The Reds announced three roster changes including the selection of Randy Wynne‘s contract from Triple-A Louisville. Cincinnati also called Righty Levi Stoudt by Triple-A, and Stoudt will start today against the Braves. To free up space in the squad, the Reds appointed right-handers Silvino Bracho for the mission.

Wynne will make his major league debut with his first appearance, and that personal milestone could come as soon as Stoudt is replaced. Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer notes that Stoudt has only recently returned from a rib cage injury and is not yet fully prepared for the workload of a proper starter, so Stoudt may not last long no matter how he fares against the Atlanta lineup. Wynne was a swingman for most of his pro career and the Reds could use something of a piggyback system between Stoudt and Wynne today.

Wynne is an undrafted right-hander who played portions of independent baseball during the 2016-19 season before eventually joining the Reds in 2019. He remained loyal to the organization after the canceled 2020 minor league season, playing in Double-A in 2021 and then in Triple-A each of the last two years. Wynne doesn’t record many strikeouts or grounders, relying on soft contact and an impressive walk speed to keep batters under control. Over 164 1/3 innings at Triple-A, Wynne, 30, has a 4.82 ERA over 164 1/3 innings and started 29 of 38 games.

Stoudt and Wynne could each get a glimpse of rotation as the Reds try to deal with multiple pitching injuries. Hunter Greene, Nick LodoloAnd Ben Lively are all offside, and while Graham Ashcraft activated yesterday from 15-day IL, the good news of his return was marred by Lively being put on the injured list with chest pain. Lively was set to start tonight’s game, which is why Cincinnati is banking on its latest Stoudt replacement plan.

This is the second time the Reds have sacked Bracho from the squad this season as he was appointed back in May and then dropped from the squad altogether. Bracho’s contract was reselected just days ago, and during his two stints in Cincinnati he posted a 3.68 ERA in 7 1/3 innings of relief with an equal number (six) strikeouts and walks. Bracho already missed out on the opportunity to pick free agency for the minor leagues when he was last dropped from the Reds’ 40-man roster, but provided he fulfills the DFA waivers again, he still has the right to refuse another direct order and test the open market.

Bracho appeared in portions of seven MLB seasons and made his debut with the Diamondbacks in 2015. After four seasons of ups and downs, he underwent surgery from Tommy John that left him sidelined for virtually the entire 2019–20 season save for one inning of a game with Arizona in 2020. Bracho then played with the Giants, Red Sox and Braves before landing in Cincinnati on a minor league contract last winter, though the right-hander rallied just 4-1 in the major leagues in 2021-22/3 innings with Atlanta last season.
