A major forest fire is raging in the municipality of Opitciwan, threatening some cottages in the area.

A firefighter, along with our reporter Kevin Crane-Desmarais, tells how the fire spread.

“At 5 p.m. the fire started to break out quite violently […] We’ve had people who were watering, but those who had pickup trucks we told them to get out […] There were five of us, six of us staying to watch the chalets so they didn’t catch fire,” said Dave Pitikwi.

The impressive pictures show citizens of the 3,000-strong community panicking at the rapid spread of the flames.

The elegance of the swimmers has brought Mexico to the top of Olympus. Joana Jiménez and Nuria Diosdado brought their country gold medals in the Salvadoran pool at the Central American and Caribbean Games. The Mexicans won the medal in the first two days of competition, confirming their great moment, which had its first climax at the last artistic swimming World Cup in Egypt.

This Saturday morning, Joana Jiménez, a member of the armed forces, won the silver medal in the individual technical competition, finishing second (210.950) behind Colombia’s Mónica Arango (223.7517). Hours later, Jiménez returned to the pool with his duo Nuria Diosdado, a benchmark in Mexican swimming. Both achieved a duet technical score of 222.1617 with an electronic mix of various 80’s songs: “Another Brick in the Wall”, “Sweet Dreams”, “Eye of Tiger”, “Life is Life”, “Take on Me . ..” The combination of music complemented their graceful movements, earning them the test with the routine of greater difficulty.

Diosdado and Jiménez were able to increase their level. They finished twelfth at the Tokyo Olympics. They excelled at the World Championships last May, winning the gold medal as a pair. The entire Mexican team won three gold medals and one bronze medal back then, which has never been seen before in the sport. The feat had a background script: They succeeded against all odds. The National Commission for Physical Culture and Sport (Conade) has since last January stripped them of the resources that swimmers are legally entitled to due to a dispute with the Mexican Swimming Federation.

The Mexican swimmers did not want to stand without a competition and therefore dared to take a step. They broke through the wall of taboos and set out to gather resources on their own. Sale of bathing suits, towels, containers… Everything helped. But the real help took place in the offices of one of Mexico’s most powerful businessmen, Carlos Slim, who offered to pay for the entire trip to the Egyptian World Cup. They were asked to bring at least one medal. The result surprised her.

The dispute between Conade and the swimmers ended up in the Mexican courts. A federal judge ruled that the sports institution acted in bad faith and must immediately return its athletic grants. The organization led by Ana Gabriela Guevara was cornered and had to give way. The swimmers, wanting to avoid a clash with authorities, dived in and fished for gold.

The very conservative United States Supreme Court on Friday handed the Joe Biden administration a resounding victory by authorizing it to apply its chosen priorities in deporting undocumented immigrants.

By a majority of eight out of nine judges, the Supreme Court dismissed an appeal by the states of Texas and Louisiana in the hands of elected Republicans on procedural grounds.

This ruling allows for the entry into force of a directive approved in September 2021 by the Minister of Internal Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, which calls on the Immigration Police (ICE) to focus their efforts on foreigners who pose a terrorist threat or criminals and on those who have arrived are after November 1, 2020.

There are more than 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States, and “we don’t have the resources to arrest and deport every one of them,” he justified, contradicting the view taken by former Republican President Donald Trump.

These new orders were immediately challenged in court by Texas and Louisiana. They had argued that this would incur additional costs for education, police and social services.

A federal judge ruled in their favor in June 2022, blocking implementation of that policy. Joe Biden’s administration then turned to the Supreme Court, which eventually agreed with him without addressing the substantive arguments.

Illegal arrivals at the US southern border had hit historic highs before the immigration rule change six weeks ago and remain high, with nearly 170,000 arrests in May.

The topic is very controversial and should be one of the main topics of the 2024 presidential campaign.

Former President Donald Trump introduced a possible new campaign slogan Saturday night at the Faith & Freedom Coalition conference in Washington, DC: “I will be impeached for you.”

Trump chaired the Saturday night gala of the conference and continued to complain about recent federal charges against him for misappropriating confidential documents. He again argued that he was merely an ex-president “lawfully holding his own documents”.

The crowd shouted “USA” at him as he announced, “I’m probably the only person in history who has been charged and my number has increased.”

“Every time the far-left Democrats, Marxists, communists and fascists impeach me, I take it as a great sign of courage,” Trump said.

Trump slammed President Joe Biden for his son Hunter’s business ties with China, suggesting that the president was soft on the rising power because of his family’s financial entanglements.

Trump read the crowd a text message from Hunter to a Chinese business associate, saying Hunter was with Joe at the time “and we’d like to understand why the commitment made hasn’t been fulfilled.”

“That’s cash he’s talking about,” Trump told the crowd of the “commitment.”

‘Can you belive that? “I didn’t know he was that tough,” he said, drawing laughter.

The ex-president implied that President Biden is doing nothing to prevent China from establishing military installations in Cuba.

“Unless I come back in,” Trump said. “In that case, I will notify China that they have 48 hours to get any military and spy equipment out of Cuba, or I will drop the hammer and there will be tariffs unlike anything China has seen before.”

Trump was easily the favorite speaker at the conference, which was attended by all the major Republican presidential candidates for 2024.

“I have a question to ask Ralph: Have your other candidates been treated like this?” Trump said, turning to Faith & Freedom Coalition founder Ralph Reed, who sat on the podium behind him and cheered the crowd.

Trump then joked that a presidential candidate was “booed off the stage,” alluding to New Jersey Gov. Chris Chrstie, whose criticism of Trump earned him heavy heckling at the conference on Friday morning.

WASHINGTON (Portal) – U.S. President Joe Biden spoke with leaders of France, Germany and the United Kingdom on Saturday as mutinous Russian mercenaries stormed Moscow after capturing a southern city overnight, the White House said.

“The heads of state and government discussed the situation in Russia. They have also reiterated their unwavering support for Ukraine,” the statement read.

Biden was briefed on the situation in Russia by his national security team on Saturday morning, the White House said, adding that the president will continue to be briefed throughout the day.

A spokesman for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that during the meeting the four leaders reiterated their commitment to continue supporting Ukraine for as long as needed.

The office of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made a similar pledge on Ukraine, saying leaders “agreed to remain in close contact in the coming days”.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also spoke to G7 counterparts.

The move by Wagner Group mercenaries presents Russian President Vladimir Putin with the first serious challenge to his seizure of power in his 23-year rule.
