National Day on the Plains of Abraham: no controversy and a declaration of love to Patrick Norman

During a National Day show that ultimately avoided controversy, emphasizing new-generation songs rather than classics from Quebec’s repertoire, it was a veteran just about to hang up his guitar that set the levels of Quebec: Abraham.

Patrick Norman, once considered cheesy, received a beautiful declaration of love as Quebecers of all generations sang with him on the hit song that marked his long and fruitful career, “When We Are in Love”.

Only two months ago, the now 76-year-old lover of six strings recalled that he underwent delicate heart surgery.

“I’m not dead,” he said. “Since I’m here with you tonight…I want to hug you tight. »

His message was heard. In the crowd, Quebecers hugged, which was the most emotional moment of the evening.

A wink to the side

The good weather helped, there was a friendly crowd by the new, more modest standards of National Day, and there was no shortage of fleur-de-lis flags on the Plains.

Despite weeks of wrangling over the political positions of the show’s host, Émile Bilodeau, we were finally offered a show free of inflammatory statements.

As promised, Bilodeau lingered at the Horne Foundry for his only rant of the evening, as he paid tribute to Rouyn’s mothers “who are fighting to enforce air quality standards because the greatest legacy we can give our children is not money, but money ‘bad health’.

We didn’t forget to pay tribute to Michel Côté, our recent great deceased. We saw him again on giant screens as the party’s spokesman in 2018, and Léane Labrèche Dor winked at him during a very inspired patriotic speech that sounded like a call to action this year. The resilience of the people of Quebec in the face of the Anglophone majority.

“We’re here, we’re proud, we’re together, we’re strong, we’re still here,” the actress chanted after describing herself as “one of those mixed threats that those walking around at night adore.” long knives. »

Indigenous artists stand out

On the musical side, the youth change that began last year was continued with renewed vigour. Result: lots of energy, rhythm, enthusiasm and guitars and few ballads.

Aboriginal artists, who attended in large numbers at the invitation of Émile Bilodeau, made a strong impression. Young Kanen was impeccable in a duet with Louis-Jean Cormier and the Maten group, accompanied by the Manawan percussion group, the Black Bear Singers.

Enthusiastically created by Émile Bilodeau and then by Muzion, who revisited La vi ti neg, the show certainly allowed many people to discover the talent of Pierre Kwenders, Marilyne Léonard and Simon Kearney, all of whom made their first appearance at the Fête National were the levels.

The old guard is not completely forgotten. Besides Patrick Norman we saw the punk group Vulgaires Machins twice rather than once, in the first part and then at the end of the TV show, and the great Laurence Jalbert who is still just as vocal. Tomber’s masterful finale was… breathtaking.

Normand Brathwate also gave a spectacular performance, playing harmonica while Émile Billodeau sang J’en a plein mon cass.

All at the same time

While the usual St-Jean classics were generally ignored, the evening ended with a song that achieved monument status in Quebec repertoire.

Described by Émile Bilodeau as “Gilles Vigneault’s heir”, Louis-Jean Cormier and all the performers ended the evening beautifully, singing the unifying Alle at the same time.

After the quarrels we saw before St-Jean, this final call to come together could not have come at a better time.

Putin’s FSB intelligence troops find £38m cash in a van and two buses in a raid on Prigozhin’s Wagner headquarters

Russian security services have reportedly found £38million in cash in a raid at Wagner’s headquarters in St Petersburg.

Yevgeny Prigozhin has confirmed that the raid by Putin’s FSB troops found a large sum of money hidden in a van and two buses on the property – belonging to the mercenary group.

He did not specify the value of the stash, but previous Russian media reported it was about 4 billion rubles, or £38 million.

In an audio message on Telegram, he explained that the funds are intended to cover compensation payments for killed Wagner soldiers.

“Wagner has worked exclusively with cash for the last 10 years – as agreed in our contract.” “I fully adhere to that,” he said.

The raid takes place as Moscow prepares for war, before the Russian Wagner militia are expected to arrive within hours.

A number of restrictions have now been put in place around the Russian capital by governor’s decree as the Wagner group advance north towards Moscow today after capturing a key military base.

Wagner boss Yevgney Prigozhin initiated an overnight military coup against Putin, in which the group took key cities and threatened the president, who called them “traitors”.

Addressing the Russian people on Saturday, Putin warned that the military leader had “stabbed him in the back” as Moscow goes into lockdown and troops dig in to prepare to defend the city. A spokesman for the Russian President said Putin is still at work in the Kremlin and has not fled Moscow.

Prigozhin and his feared 25,000-strong Wagner militia took control of the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don on Saturday. They said they were “ready to die” for their “March of Justice” and headed north with hundreds of men in convoys of armored vehicles.

Settlers riot in another Palestinian village; IDF Spokesman: “Shameful acts of terrorism” – The Times of Israel

Several dozen settlers rampaged through the Palestinian West Bank village of Umm Safa on Saturday, setting fire to vehicles and homes. This was the fifth straight day of vigilante attacks against Palestinian civilians since a deadly Palestinian terrorist attack on Tuesday.

Palestinian media reported that settlers in the village north of Ramallah burned down several houses and cars and some shot at a Palestinian TV crew. Video footage showed a group of partially masked Israeli settlers opening fire.

The Palestinian Authority’s Ministry of Health said stones were fired at an ambulance that was driving past the village, and the driver was slightly injured.

Israeli human rights group Yesh Din claimed that Israel Defense Forces troops were present at the scene but did nothing to stop the settlers. The IDF said it had detained an Israeli suspect and settled “violent clashes” between settlers and Palestinians.

According to Army Radio, the settlers had driven into the village to carry out the attack. Devout Jews do not drive on the Sabbath unless it is necessary to save a life. The basis for this is the Jewish legal principle Pikuah Nefesh – as it is called in Hebrew – which surpasses almost all other religious requirements.

During the attack on Umm Safa, a soldier was slightly injured by a stone thrown at him, the IDF said. It was unclear who threw the stone.

“The IDF will continue to act decisively to stop all violence and property destruction. “The IDF condemns such incidents of nationalist crime,” the military said in a statement.

The arrested settler was handed over to the police for further questioning, the IDF said.

The IDF’s international media spokesman also condemned the settlers’ unrest and condemned the “acts of terrorism”.

“Disgraceful deeds on the Sabbath,” Lieutenant Colonel Richard Hecht replied on Twitter to the German ambassador. “We’re not. These are acts of terrorism committed by criminals. We do what we can.”

Opposition leader Yair Lapid said the violence “crosses all borders”.

“Lighting the homes and cars of innocent people is inhumane and definitely not Jewish. Prime Minister Netanyahu must condemn this disgrace and take strong action against it. “This is a moral disgrace and a security threat,” Lapid tweeted.

The IDF has admitted that it has failed to stop other settler uprisings in recent days.

Revenge attacks on Turmus Ayya and other villages followed the killing of four Israelis by Palestinian gunmen in a terrorist attack on Tuesday.

Army spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said the troops tried to prevent the Israelis from attacking Turmus Ayya but were too weak.

“We didn’t have enough forces in the area they chose in the first wave,” he told journalists on Friday.

“We failed this time,” Hagari added.

Residents of Turmus Ayya told AFP they saw between 200 and 300 Israelis rampage through their village on Wednesday, attacking residents and damaging dozens of homes and cars. One Palestinian was killed in unclear circumstances during the violence

A delegation of more than 20 diplomatic missions, including those from the European Union and the United States, visited the village on Friday to assess the damage.

The EU’s top representative to the Palestinians, Sven Kühn von Burgsdorff, criticized Israel for failing to meet its obligations to protect the Palestinians.

“There was no attempt or attempt to stop the settlers,” he said.

Israeli police said on Friday they had arrested four people in connection with the violence, without giving details. They were interrogated by the Shin Bet security service.

United Nations human rights chief Volker Turk warned that “the violence combined with the inflammatory rhetoric only serves to drive Israelis and Palestinians deeper into the abyss.”

1687640439 Why the economy could be in a sliding recession

Why the economy could be in a ‘sliding recession’

The much-anticipated recession of 2023 has not yet materialized. Some of the latest economic data is pointing to strength rather than weakness.

A strategist has a term for what that says about the state of the US economy.

“We call this a rolling recession,” David Bailin, chief investment officer at Citi Global Wealth Investments, told Yahoo Finance.

He explained that some sectors of the economy are already in decline, while others – like travel and leisure – are still going strong.

“Commercial real estate is clearly in a recession,” he said. “Some of our manufacturing and consumer staples industries are in recession right now.”

“These are declining companies in the United States … but the overall economy is not,” he explained.

In fact, the latest S&P Global US Manufacturing PMI Index came in at 46.3 on Friday versus 48.5 expected. Anything below the 50 level is a contraction. Nevertheless, the survey data as a whole point to a continued expansion of the economy.

“Interest affects everything”

The Federal Reserve’s task of cooling the economy by raising interest rates rapidly to curb inflation was no easy task. Economists say the longer interest rates stay at these levels, the more likely it is that other sectors will be affected.

“Ultimately, tariffs affect everything,” Bailin said. “Small and medium-sized companies that need capital are now at a disadvantage. This will ultimately limit their growth or cause them to lay off employees or go out of business.”

Although the labor market is slowing, new jobs continue to be created. 399,000 jobs were added in May, beating Wall Street’s estimate of 195,000. Unemployment in the US is 3.7%.

“I think the job market shock is yet to come,” Liz Ann Sonders, chief investment strategist at Charles Schwab, told Yahoo Finance earlier this month.

“I think over the next month or two, what companies are saying about their cost structure, particularly labor costs, will be a big clue as to whether this might be the proverbial next shoe to drop,” she added.

The story goes on

Until there are major ruptures, some strategists are cautious and do not speak of a recession in the near term.

“We have lowered our estimate of the likelihood of the US economy entering a recession over the next 12 months to 25% (from 35% previously),” Goldman Sachs economists noted earlier this week.

Jay Hatfield, CEO of Infrastructure Capital Management, points to the residential real estate sector as an indicator that it’s too early to forecast a recession.

“We don’t think we’re going to be in a short-term recession in the US as the US housing sector is resilient due to the lack of homes for sale,” Hatfield said.

Another sign of strength is consumer spending. Non-inflation-adjusted retail sales in May rose 0.3% month-on-month while a 0.2% decline was forecast.

“Contrary to expectations, May retail sales headlines show that consumer spending remains resilient,” Oren Klachkin, senior US economist at Oxford Economics, wrote in a recent note.

He added: “The recession will be delayed as long as consumers continue to spend.”

Currently, the Federal Reserve is playing a balancing act. The central bank has suspended interest rate hikes but warned that another hike or two could come later this year to continue the fight against inflation.

On Thursday, Fed Chair Jerome Powell reiterated to lawmakers that the central bank expects to hike rates again, but at a slower pace to avoid the economy slipping into recession.

Jim Jones Strikes Back at Pusha T… After Louis Vuitton Diss

6/24/2023 1:07 PM PT

Jim Jones has words for Pusha T after the guy slandered him PharrellLast week she walked the high fashion runway — and it sounds like things are getting personal… and possibly even ugly.

A new clip of JJ’s reaction to PT leaked online this week…it’s a quick clip of Jim dropping bars and maybe even making a video. Like I said, it’s just a small slice of the full range – but at first glance he’s all about getting into the mud to hit back.

Twitter/@essowrld

Check it out for yourself… Jim references and pokes fun at Push’s association with McDonald’s while slamming his latest album, It’s Almost Dry, calling it essentially “trash.”

Then he mentions Clipse – Pusha’s rap group with his brother, No malice — and has this to say… “I’m trying to get the clips back // Speaking of brother, what happened to that boy? // Looks like they’re selling crack to this kid.”

Yes, on the face of it… Jim accuses Malice of once being a drug user. He and Push made their names rapping about selling drugs — but Jim reckons at least one of them did more than that. Considering that Malice has by and large left rap behind…you have to imagine his brother taking that to heart and most likely responding with even more vigor.

Well, how this all started… it goes back to April when Jim turned on a podcast and said “Pusha T.” should not be considered a top 50 rapper of all time – who totally messes up his music.

Jim Jones doesn’t care for Pusha T so I hope he ignores this, but it embarrasses him even more pic.twitter.com/cZFkgzHpCM

— Brandon Todd Sr ♊️ (@talkswittodd) June 21, 2023

During Pharrell’s Debut LV men’s line last week in Paris…Push and Malice published one new clipse trackand many felt that his bars were addressed directly to Jim – presumably in response to what Jim had said in the spring.

Well, it looks like Jim wants all the smoke — and we know Push isn’t one to shy away from a rap beef. He’s taken it there before… and that was against drakenot less.

On April 3rd and 4th, West paid another visit to Ohio State with both of his parents. He began an official visit to the Buckeyes on Friday and has now publicly announced his commitment to Ohio State.

We stand Aaron Scott of Springfield, Ohio (who is also currently on his official visit to Ohio State) visited Ohio State together on April 3, and Buckeye’s staff made sure the two knew they were their top priority when recruiting cornerbacks had. The visit was an important step toward signing the contract for West, who spent a second day in Ohio State on April 4. Now that he’s back at Ohio State, West is a buckeye.

In the end he chose Ohio State over Michigan and it’s a big recruiting win for the Buckeyes.

Looking to sign at least three cornerbacks in the 2024 class and possibly four, the Buckeyes now have their first in West, which has excelled in one of the best prep football programs in the country.

Titan Submarine: "you will kill someone"the warning emails received by the boss of OceanGate

After five people die in the implosion of the Titan, a tourist submarine she was using to approach the wreck of the Titanic, the submersible’s design is discovered. However, the boss of the company that built it, OceanGate, had been made aware of security vulnerabilities.

The BBC revealed emails exchanged between OceanGate boss Stockton Rush and deep-sea research specialist Rob McCallum. In 2018, he challenged the CEO not to use his submarine: “I think you’re potentially putting yourself and your customers in a dangerous dynamic.”

“We’ve heard it too many times Unfounded “You’re killing someone” criticism”, Stockton Rush responded. Despite multiple requests from experts, the Titan submarine had never been certified prior to its commercial deployment.

“I am perfectly qualified”

In other discussions, Rob McCallum had insisted that the submarine had to be approved before any reconnaissance tour. Stockton Rush had continued to defend its “innovative approach”. which “violated the doctrine of the submersibles”.

According to the OceanGate boss, industry players tried to prevent new market entrants. “I am fully qualified to understand the risks and issues related to underwater exploration,” he said.

Several experts have advised against OceanGate’s underwater expeditions for two main reasons, Rob McCallum explained. First, the use of carbon fiber, a material considered unreliable to build the Titan; on the other hand, the fact that The submersible was never homologated.
