How Connor Bedard’s ancestors migrated west

The Canadian’s supporters remained hopeful, but Gary Bettman’s abacus decided otherwise. Connor Bedard will likely end up in Chicago, where he will continue to delight Blackhawks fans for many years to come.

Already described as the most talented player of his generation, he was born on July 17, 2005 in North Vancouver. In an interview with TVA Sports last year, his father Thomas revealed the family’s ties to their Quebec roots.

“Fifty years before I was born, the Bédard family settled in Quebec. Since then our clan has moved to Western Canada. That’s where I was born and that’s where Connor was born. I only learned that a few years ago. »

The history of the Bédards is representative of all these families from the French-speaking diaspora that crossed the continent. Their language resisted for a long time until finally assimilated through intermarriage. The lack of language communities that would be able to pass on the heritage also contributed to this.

ISAAC BEDARD

Ancestor Isaac Bédard (1614-1689), originally from La Rochelle, landed in Quebec around 1660. His wife Marie Girard (1623-1688?) and their children followed a little later. Before heading to New France, the Bédards had to renounce their Protestantism.

After initially settling on the Côte de la Fabrique, where they had problems with the neighborhood, the family settled in Petite-Auvergne, just south of the Trait Carré in Charlesbourg.

Skilled with his hands, Isaac receives an order for 100 oars from Jean Talon. His son Jacques (1644-1711), a farmer and also a talented carpenter in Charlesbourg, built two wings of the General Hospital.

His grandson Jacques (1760?-1832) was also skilled with the hammer: he built the back gallery of the Saint-Mathias-du-Richelieu church.

The Bédards spent a century on the banks of the Richelieu before moving west in the early 20th century.

Ambroise Bédard (1848-1909) settled in Saint-Pierre-Jolys, a town of 1,000 people, still predominantly French-speaking, about thirty miles south of Winnipeg.

His son Lucien (1883-1946), born in Quebec, was still living on a farm in Manitoba in 1911. In 1921 he was in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, with his eight children. He will die across the continent in Vancouver after having 14 children.

His eldest son Joseph Désiré (1906-1992), who was to pursue a career in the Navy, married a German, which led to the assimilation of the offspring.

Désiré’s son Garth Frederick Bedard, born in a cab in New Westminster, is the grandfather of the young prodigy. Garth will not be there next week when his grandson dons the Blackhawks jersey. He tragically died in a car accident two years ago.

“The security forces operating at the border crossing countered the threat by fighting back and neutralizing the terrorist. The terrorist’s death was later confirmed at the scene,” the source added.

The Qalandiya checkpoint is the main Palestinian border crossing between annexed East Jerusalem and Ramallah, the seat of the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, a Palestinian territory occupied by Israel since 1967.

The official Palestinian news agency, Wafa, identified the person killed as Ishaq al-Ajlouni, aged 17 or 18, from the Kufr Aqab neighborhood north of the checkpoint.

The Martyrs’ Brigades of Al-Aqsa, the armed wing of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah party, said in a statement that its “heroic fighters” were […] could attack the occupying soldiers directly [israéliens] at the Qalandiya checkpoint”.

The shooting follows a string of deaths in the West Bank this week, including four Israelis killed in a Palestinian attack and ten Palestinians killed in an Israeli raid followed by a drone strike.

In addition, a 39-year-old succumbed to his injuries on Saturday after being “shot down by the occupier”. [Israël] Friday at dawn in Nablus,” in the northern West Bank, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.

When asked by the AFP news agency, the Israeli army could not comment on the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Belgian singer Claude Barzotti has died at the age of 69

Belgian singer Claude Barzotti, author of slow songs and hits from the 1980s like “Le Rital” or “Aime Moi”, has died of cancer at his home, his manager announced to AFP on Saturday.

The slightly hoarse-voiced singer-songwriter “died in his bed at the age of 69 surrounded by his two daughters” in a town between Brussels and Charleroi in Belgium, according to Laurent Comtat.

“Barzotti preferred to be described as a singer of emotions than as a romantic. “He was a lively skinned, really sensitive person who drank to fight his stage fright,” he said.

“I am Rital and I will remain so”, Barzotti also sang in one of his hits “Le Rital”, where the man who was born near Charleroi on July 23, 1953 recalled his origins. His father was an Italian miner.

The hundreds of thousands of Quebecers taking vacations this summer are a veritable gold mine for restaurateurs along Highway 20.

And the traders don’t hide it: National Day kicks off the most lucrative time of year for these private dining stops.

This obviously applies to franchisees in Madrid 2.0, the rest area in Saint-Léonard-d’Aston famous for its giant dinosaurs.

“Summer in general is really a big time, that’s when we use our strengths […] We’re expecting a very big weekend with Saint-Jean,” says Mahyka Camirand, spokeswoman for local restaurant St-Hubert Express.

Ms. Camirand, who is also the director of St-Hubert in Drummondville and a future co-franchisee of the family business, notes a sales increase of around 15% over the summer.

She also notes that the good weather, and especially the holidays, bring a different dynamic.

“When people are in vacation mode, you can feel it straight away, people stop to eat more regularly,” she says.

Estimated period in Sainte-Julie

The first summer weekend was also awaited by dealers near Highway 20 in Sainte-Julie.

Viji Gnanarajah, owner of Restaurant Scores, also estimates a 15% increase in traffic from June 23.

“Here we don’t have any accommodation in the city, so we live off tourists and motorists who drive on the highway and stop to eat,” the lady said.

She insists that industry retailers “like to have hotels nearby” to increase visitor retention rates.

The businesswoman also recalls that her client base is likely to double this summer with the return of American tourists who were again prevented from entering Quebec last year due to the pandemic.

“We expect 50% more traffic than last summer,” she predicts.

Also in eastern Quebec

A stopover in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli is enough to see that the holiday season has arrived and restaurants and gas stations will take advantage of it. During our visit, the parking lots of the McDonald’s, Tim Hortons, Subway, and Normandin restaurants were full.

And that traffic is noticeable as far as Rivière-du-Loup, a town that’s considered a crossroads because people who want to go to Gaspésie or New Brunswick have to go through Rivière-du-Loup.

Additionally, due to its proximity to Highway 20, the St-Hubert restaurant is one of the busiest in the province during the summer.

Facts confirmed by owner Charles Pomerleau, who also owns a St-Hubert Express in Montmagny.

And guess what? When it came time to open this new restaurant in Montmagny with his partner Martin Pagé, Mr. Pomerleau also chose a location near Highway 20.

In numbers

Before the pandemic, the number of cars passing near Drummondville on Highway 20 daily was estimated at more than 45,000.

In the Bas-Saint-Laurent, daily traffic is significantly lower at around 10,000 vehicles per day.

Still, around 1.2 million people remain stuck at Madrid 2.0 in a year, according to pre-pandemic statistics.

Kate Middleton wears nearly identical outfits as she feels confident

Kate Middleton wears nearly identical outfits as she “feels confident” in “structured” silhouettes.

The Princess of Wales has long been known to recycle her stylish ensembles.

But the 41-year-old queen also seems to like to iterate on certain cuts and styles when it comes to her lookbook.

It seems that once Kate Middleton knows what she likes, she sticks with it.

The mother-of-three was spotted at the Order of the Garter this week in a polka dot Alessandra Rich dress that’s almost identical to her Ascot 2022 ensemble by the same designer.

Elsewhere this month, Kate opted for the Self-Portrait brand when she (appropriately) reopened the National Portrait Gallery on Tuesday.

Repli-Kate also recently struck again when it came to one of her favorite basics: blazers.

The princess is a fan of relaxed silhouettes in fashionable colors like black, white and red.

Whilst attending college in Derby in February she wore a £69.99 cream double breasted dress from Zara.

And last summer, she kept her chic look with a very similar £50 supermarket blazer.

Speaking to FEMAIL, style expert Lisa Talbot says the princess’ “style personality” has evolved into a signature aesthetic that often accentuates her athletic physique.

“Her look, while evolving over the years, has largely stayed and resembles the silhouettes she’s chosen,” Lisa said.

‘[Kate] Obviously she’d rather stay more structured and complement her body shape.”

She added, “We all have a style personality that we’re naturally attracted to. It shows in the styles, shapes, colors and brands we choose.”

“They’re the ones that give us confidence, which is why we repeat them regularly.”

She says the Princess of Wales assembled her jewelry to evoke class and elegance.

“Kate is a classic style personality, but we see her in more traditional traditional styles and prints,” explained Lisa.

“That’s her signature style that she created.” We can also see that her style is also her personal brand.”

The royal clearly has a penchant for certain cuts and shades.

Kate has been known to enjoy a pop of color with a bold scarlet — especially in sleek, form-fitting jackets.

In 2016, Kate wore a £49.99 Zara blazer to the Queen’s birthday party, exuding glamor and confidence that would become one of her trademarks.

But the silhouettes became clearer and less relaxed.

On a visit to Anglesey in 2019, the royal looked stunning in a £762 red wool blazer by Lorenzo Serafini.

And three years later, during a trip to Copenhagen, Denmark, she showed off her stylish flair with another £59.99 red Zara blazer and a white ruffled blouse.

Another signature hue in her wardrobe is, perhaps unsurprisingly, a vibrant royal blue.

And the powerful, bold hue usually requires a very sophisticated blazer cut.

A case in point is her bespoke Catherine Walker coat dress, which Kate wore to the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey last year.

It sounds similar to her Eponine dress, which she reportedly debuted at an engagement in 2017.

The princess also clearly favors polka dot prints – she last showed the design on Monday at the Order of the Garter.

But Kate’s love of the motif goes back years: she chose a breezy, light blue printed dress to introduce Prince George to the world in July 2013, in a look that was emulated by new mums across the country.

She has also worn polka dots on several occasions at Wimbledon.

In 2017, Kate kept it classic with a white and black square-neck Dolce & Gabbana creation, and in 2021 opted for a more casual take on polka dots, pairing an Alessandra Rich skirt with a simple white tee.

Russia Where is Rostov on Don DW English

Russia: Where is Rostov-on-Don? – DW (English)

The head of the Wagner mercenary group said his troops had occupied key military sites in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don.

“Military objects of Rostov, including the airport, are under our control,” Yevgeny Prigozhin said in a video released Saturday morning. However, his claims could not be independently verified.

Why is Rostov-on-Don important?

Just 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the Ukrainian border, Rostov-on-Don is the largest city in southern Russia. With a population of over a million, it is the capital of the Rostov region, which borders parts of eastern Ukraine. The city is on the main route between the border with Ukraine’s Donbass region and Moscow, some 1,100 kilometers (680 miles) to the north.

The city is an important command and logistics hub for the Russian army. It houses the headquarters of Russia’s Southern Military District, whose 58th Combined Arms Army is involved in operations against Kiev’s counter-offensive in southern Ukraine, according to the Institute for War Research. Rostov-on-Don is also the home base of the Russian Joint Forces Group’s command center throughout Ukraine. Any threats to the military installations in the city are likely to affect Russia’s war effort.

DW international correspondent Roman Goncharenko said the reports of a Wagner group mutiny could mark a turning point for Russia.

“Taking control of Rostov-on-Don, or at least part of Rostov-on-Don, where the Russian army headquarters is located, is an unprecedented move and shows how weak the Russian military is,” he said.

America’s oldest brewery reminds beer lovers that their “story has no one else”

FOX Business’ Jeff Flock reports from the Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville, Pennsylvania to speak with the Yuengling sisters, who run America’s oldest beer company.

Since 1829, Yuentling’s flagship brewery in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, has served a product that brings Americans and families together.

“It’s our story,” Debbie Yuengling, manager of employee engagement and culture at Yuengling, told FOX Business’ Jeff Flock on Wednesday’s Mornings with Maria. “We have a history that nobody else has. We’re America’s oldest brewery, six generations back, and we’re very excited and proud of it.”

“We’re very fortunate,” said Wendy Yuengling, chief administrative officer. “We’re the sixth generation in a family business, working side-by-side with our father, which not many family businesses can say.”

Debbie and her sisters – Jennifer, Sheryl and Wendy – run America’s oldest brewery as Yuengling celebrates its 194th birthday this year. And despite its age, the sisters can say the Pottsville site can still produce 900 cans of beer per minute.

BUD LIGHT 24-PACK SELLS AS A RETAIL CONTAINER FOR $3.49 IN AT LEAST ONE STORE: REPORT

The German-originated beer brand’s name means “young man” in English, which one Yuengling sister sees as rather ironic.

Yuengling “has a history that no one else has,” Debbie Yuengling, Yuengling’s manager of employee engagement and culture, told Jeff Flock of FOX Business, based out of America’s oldest brewery in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday. (Getty Images)

“I think that’s part of our history. We are America’s oldest brewery, six generations and now four women who will run the brewery,” Debbie said.

To mark the company’s milestone, Yuengling released a limited edition 12-ounce can featuring “Let’s Go USA” and a Stars and Stripes design.

Yuengling’s sister, Jennifer, serves as the vice president of operations for the brewery. (Getty Images)

The branding move follows Bud Light’s decision to send transgender social media influencer Dylan Mulvaney a commemorative pack of beer with his face on the can, prompting consumer and market backlash. Last week, Bud Light sales fell 24.4% year over year.

On the other hand, the Yuengling sisters confirmed that they remain America’s number one craft brewer, selling more beer than any other US brand at over 2.2 billion barrels a year.

Country music star John Rich, who owns Nashville-based bar Redneck Riviera, told The Big Money Show on Wednesday that Bud Light has “gone to zero” with its customers.

“No one would buy it. And guess what they’re buying now? Yuengling,” Rich said. “Many people [are] Moving to Yuengling so we are proud to have such a brand at Redneck Riviera.”

Although the brewery was founded by the sisters’ great-great-great-grandfather and the industry remains largely male-dominated, Sheryl – who runs the ordering service – expressed that it’s “a fun business”.

Singer-songwriter John Rich tells the story of his Redneck Riviera Bar and his all-American whiskey in The Big Money Show.

Showing how successful the family has remained over the years, the Yuengling sisters know it’s because of the proud, patriotic bond they’ve forged at the top.

“We have the oldest brewery in America. No one else can tell,” Debbie said. “We have great employees and very loyal customers.”
