  • An interview has surfaced with one of the men aboard the Titan, in which he talks about being trapped underwater.

  • Paul-Henri Nargeolet, a veteran of deep-sea exploration, spoke about the potential dangers of being trapped.

  • He described a hypothetical scenario that he may now be experiencing in reality aboard Titan.

An interview has surfaced with one of the men aboard the lost Titan submersible describing what it would be like to be trapped at the bottom of the ocean.

The hypothetical scenario presented by Paul-Henry Nargeolet in the old clip chillingly resembles one of the possible fates of the Titan, which – with him on board – was still missing on Thursday.

Nargeolet, known as “Mr. Titanic”, is a veteran of the deep sea. He was part of the first expedition in 1987 to see Titanic on the seabed and has visited the site at least 35 times.

In the video, Nargeolet talks about the dangers of diving to the wreck in his own ship, the Nautile, in a clip that has now been posted to YouTube.

According to New Zealand broadcaster 1News, he spoke to the Titanic Channel in 2019.

AP also appears to have referenced the interview in its coverage, although it said the interview took place in 2017.

“If you’re stuck on the bottom with the Nautil, you can survive for a while because you can stay on the bottom for like four or five days — which wouldn’t help much,” he said.

Nargeolet also said that a submersible pilot had to be “very careful” near a shipwreck. “A wreck is a dangerous environment,” he said.

The search for Nargeolet and the other four passengers – including OceanGate’s CEO Stockton Rush – has been ongoing since Sunday when the Titan lost contact with the surface.

Experts have outlined several possible scenarios, as reported by Insider’s Sophia Ankel and Marianne Guenot.

These include a catastrophic vehicle implosion; the possibility that it has already appeared; and the situation Nargeolet described in the clip — that it could get stuck on the sea floor with no power.

The story goes on

In this case, staying warm is the biggest risk as the water outside is around 33 degrees, he said in the video clip, adding, “We know very well that we’re going to die sooner.” [that]with the temperature.”

The interception of popping noises from the water on Wednesday had renewed hope that the passengers were still alive. However, it was estimated that the ship had run out of oxygen around 7 a.m. ET Thursday, making the chance of a successful rescue increasingly remote.

Nargeolet described how he felt that a trapped passenger would die in the situation he was describing, telling his interviewee: “After a while you die from the cold, which is not a bad way to die because you fall asleep.” he said, adding, “You’re not suffering.”

Sinema cites bill targeting executives of failed banks after their Wall Street ties were criticized – AOL

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, the independent Democratic defector who has been criticized for being too closely aligned with Wall Street interests, earned credit Thursday for helping broker legislation that would would be aimed at executives of failed banks.

Sinema, who has not said if she is seeking a second term in 2024, cited the bill, passed this week by the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and City Affairs, as an example of the bipartisan agreement she says is often lacking in Congress .

Her unwavering support for negotiations across the aisle sparked her divorce from the Democratic Party last year and complicates her potential re-election path in one of the most watched Senate campaigns.

Sinema described to The Associated Press her role in brokering a settlement between committee chair Senator Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, and top Republican Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina.

“My job was to help them understand the differences between them and find some of those similarities,” Sinema said.

Spokespersons for Brown and Scott said they worked with Sinema and other committee members to implement their ideas.

The move comes in response to the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank earlier this year, the second largest bank failure in US history, followed by the demise of Signature Bank and First Republic Bank.

The Senate bill would make it easier for regulators to reclaim executive pay from insolvent banks. Sinema said she is pushing to include a provision requiring the Federal Reserve to report on efforts to improve banking regulation.

Following the collapse of the Silicon Valley bank, Sinema responded by backing a 2018 bill that relaxed requirements for “stress testing” banks with assets ranging from $100 billion to $250 billion, including Silicon Valley. The Fed blamed the collapse on poor management, weakened regulations, and lax oversight by its own staff.

Sinema said her support for expanding regulators’ powers was not a response to the pressure being put on her. Critics, she said, “do not serve on the appropriate committees, do not understand the issues, and are not involved in the day-to-day work that ensures that we have a healthy and strong economic and financial system in our country.”

She said that even after the rollback, the Fed has the power to regulate banks appropriately and that the central bank had signs that Silicon Valley was in trouble but had not acted with urgency.

“The mistake they made in the past was to act at the speed of the old business and not the speed of the new business,” she said.

Sinema, known for keeping her contacts with reporters to a minimum, has stepped up her engagement with the media this year as she ponders her political future. She is raising money for a possible re-election campaign but has not announced if she will run as she is focused on her work in Congress.

She would find herself in a challenging and unpredictable three-way race.

US Rep. Ruben Gallego, a Navy veteran and film critic, is the only major Democrat in the Senate race. Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb is the only major Republican nominee, although former TV host Kari Lake is considering running.

Arizona will play an important role in Democrats’ bid to retain their narrow Senate majority as the overall election map favors Republicans in 2024.

Sinema has also been mentioned as a possible candidate for a bipartisan “one-size-fits-all” White House ticket being considered by No Labels, a group seeking ballot access in multiple states to field an alternative candidate “if the two parties select unduly divisive presidential candidates”.

Sinema rejected the idea on Thursday.

“I’m not running for president,” she said.

1687477209 And just like that the Sex and the City sequel

And just like that… the ‘Sex and the City’ sequel became the first show ever to be filmed in an Apple Store

To paraphrase a classic episode from the original HBO series, “New York City is a great place to get engaged. It’s also a great place to film if you’re interested in Sex and the City.” Michael Patrick King, the showrunner of Max’s SATC sequel And Just Like That, told IndieWire, “Every time , when you go into Carrie’s apartment From the outside, it’s an event for everyone. You see Carrie Bradshaw in front of Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment. It’s like seeing a lion in the jungle on safari: ‘I saw the original!’”

The town was always on par with sex on the original series and may have edged it out a bit in season one’s And Just Like That, but they’re level in season two, with a lot more sex and banter for Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and her new friends and lovers. Case in point: Miranda might strap on with her new partner Che, but And Just Like That was the first project ever to be filmed in an Apple Store — a decision King says Apple CEO Tim Cook was left to.

“They work so much with the show, the exposure there kind of helped get it publicized for it to become a reality,” site manager Julie Sage told IndieWire. “That was one of the easier ones for me.”

1687477202 424 And just like that the Sex and the City sequel

This urge to be a part of the “Sex and the City” universe has remained unabated since the days when Magnolia had to hire “cupcake bouncers” after the series popularized her offerings. And in Season 2, those ladies who eat lunch are actually eating lunch. And party. And attend the Met Gala. And go to Javits Center. Carrie’s apartment may be an iconic setting, but if there’s a chance for her to go to the city she once dated, she takes it.

“When it’s a brand with history and a little bit of influence, it’s easier to visit places that would never open up to a film crew for days,” King said. “And on this year’s most extravagant shoot, we basically took over The Tin Building,” the destination restaurant and marketplace at the Seaport in downtown Manhattan. “Jean-Georges and Lois [Freedman, President/CEO of Jean-Georges Management] let’s come in It’s a piece of New York that a lot of people outside of New York haven’t seen.”

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s reminiscent of the Sex and the City season filmed after the events of 9/11: Here’s our city, we’re still here, we’re still great. “The great thing about ‘Sex and the City’ and that [aftermath] 9/11 was the spirit and how the city came back to life. And the city is now living after the pandemic, that’s the reality. It’s very busy and alive now and for our story Carrie has come back to life – why wouldn’t she be out there?”

Nicole Ari Parker, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Karen Pittman at a restaurant at And Just Like ThatNicole Ari Parker, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis and Karen Pittman in “And Just Like That” Max

That means showing the public as much of the city as possible. If the characters are in a restaurant, you better believe it has huge windows that let you see Manhattan even in the background. “We have a lot of restaurants where you can see the entire space,” Sage said. “A lot of New York is like some kind of puzzle restaurants. [We need] more of an open landscape in scale. “There are a lot of small, intimate, beautiful restaurants that don’t always appear in the film because they don’t have enough space for people. A lot is about lighting and windows. It’s the view they want to show.”

At the same time, And Just Like That strives to ground itself in the reality of Manhattan around the year 2023 (to the extent this show can, of course, without sacrificing the glamour). Part of that was the shock when one of the core foursomes stepped onto the subway last season — only to be attacked by someone dressed as Chucky. But we also got to see a lot more of Carrie’s apartment building than Sex and the City ever revealed, as she becomes friends with her downstairs neighbor, Lisette.

Sarah Jessica Parker at Carrie Bradshaw's apartment in And Just Like That“And just like that” Max

“When you’re writing something, you’re always imagining the reality,” King said. “If I know that Carrie lives above someone, and if I’m very lucky and get enough episodes, you can say, ‘What does this apartment look like?’ And what does that staircase look like?’” And no, you’re not imagining it: Carrie’s apartment has been optimized from the original Sex and the City set. “We redesigned it to feel like a jewelry box that she wanted to be in.”

But when And Just Like That and its characters are unabashedly in love with the city, the feeling is entirely mutual. For the first time ever, the Empire State Building — along with the Javits Center, One Bryant Park, One World Trade Center, and Pier 17 — went pink in honor of the 25th anniversary of the original and the premiere of season two on Max. “The city and ‘And Just Like That’ are very much celebrating the fact that we’re all still here,” King said. “It is really important.”

Warriors trade for Chris Paul send Jordan Poole draft picks

Warriors trade for Chris Paul, send Jordan Poole, draft picks to Wizards: sources – The Athletic

The Athletic is covering the 2023 NBA draft live.

By Shams Charania, Josh Robbins, Anthony Slater and David Aldridge

The Washington Wizards are trading guard Chris Paul to the Warriors in exchange for a package that includes guard Jordan Poole, league sources told The Athletic.

  • The Warriors are sending Poole, Ryan Rollins, a protected first-round pick in 2030 and a second-round pick in 2027 for Paul to the Wizards.
  • The Phoenix Suns traded guards Paul and Landry Shamet to Washington on Sunday, along with at least four second-round picks and multiple pick swaps for guard Bradley Beal.
  • Wizards officials told The Athletic Sunday they would love to have Paul on the roster next season but would work with the Suns and Paul to trade him if he would rather play elsewhere.

The Athletic’s instant analysis:

What is this trade for the Warriors about?

Multiple Factors. The immediate is the present. They strive to maximize Steph Curry’s fading title window. There is clearly an internal belief that Paul, who turns 39 in the playoffs next year, can do a better job of fulfilling that goal for 2024 as the team’s third defenseman than Poole, who turned 24 this week. Neither of them had a great end of the season. Poole fought relentlessly in the playoffs and Paul was injured again.

But there is also the financial factor. Poole completed a four-year contract extension worth $123 million starting next season. Paul has $30.8 million on his contract for the upcoming season and then an unguaranteed $30 million the following season, giving the Warriors far more flexibility as they ultimately intend to join the second tax apron and those resulting from it to evade resulting penalties in the latest CBA. – Slater

Any other aspects of this trade for the Warriors?

They terminated Rollins’ contract as part of the deal, freeing up a needed squad spot. Rollins had a guaranteed contract for next season and a non-guaranteed contract for the following season. This allows them to add an additional veteran minimum of free agency, bringing that pivot back to the present.

Another factor: Several insiders have already expressed the expectation that Steve Kerr will be excited about the addition of Paul. Kerr has long believed that the Warriors are at their best when they have a more traditional point guard as a regular part of the rotation that rules everything. That’s why he idolized Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston and what he feels was missing last season. Paul is as traditional as a point guard can get. But man, the Warriors are going to have a little backcourt. – Slater

GO DEEPER

Slater: Why the Chris Paul and Jordan Poole trade for the Warriors came about

Why this is a win for the Wizards

Suddenly, the disappointing return on Washington’s Beal-to-Phoenix swap is looking far better. The Wizards traded Paul, who didn’t fit into either their short- or long-term plans, for a quality 24-year guard and some much-needed draft capital. And maybe the Wizards later decide to trade Poole for more draft capital.

Terminating Beal’s Albatross contract in the Phoenix trade and avoiding a long-term salary commitment to Kristaps Porziņģis (by not re-signing Porziņģis and transferring him to Boston) made Washington more comfortable accepting Poole’s contract. – Robbins

The “Washington should just bang Chris Paul out” crowd suddenly fell silent. To turn a 38-year-old guard who had no intention or desire to play for a radically reforming team into a 24-year-old guard with a big but not terrible contract – a 24-year-old who was a standout Getting Rolled onto a championship team just 12 months ago — along with Rollins, last year’s GSW runner-up and a future Warriors first-and-choice teammate — is a pretty solid return. If the Wizards sign Anthony Black with the eighth pick in the first round tonight, they’ve got quite an interesting young backcourt to develop.

But after the past seven days in DC, I’m not going to predict what this new front office will do next. – Aldridge

How risky is this move for the Warriors?

Extremely. Poole played all 82 games last season. He’s been indispensable to them when Curry or Klay Thompson misses regular season games, and those two tend to miss at least a handful. Paul is obviously not as reliably available and doesn’t have nearly the long-term benefits. By the time Poole is in his third and fourth year of renewal, reaching his prime, Paul could retire.

But this is now, and the Warriors have great faith in Rick Celebrini and her coaching staff to keep older players healthy and fresh when the playoffs arrive. They’ve guided Thompson through some brutal injuries, recovered Draymond Green from a nervous ailment and kept Otto Porter Jr. healthy long enough for him to be a useful part of the 2022 title race. But this bet on Paul and the costs involved represent a higher risk. – Slater

backstory

Paul was the New Orleans Pelicans’ fourth overall pick in the 2005 NBA draft. Paul played the first six seasons of his career in New Orleans before playing the next six with the Los Angeles Clippers. He then completed stints with the Houston Rockets, Oklahoma City Thunder and most recently the Phoenix Suns.

Paul started all 1,214 regular-season games he played, averaging 17.9 points, 9.5 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game.

Ukraine found flight instructors: Denmark and the Netherlands took matters into their own hands and decided to train Ukrainian soldiers to operate the F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft from the American manufacturer Lockheed Martin.

Almost a month after the United States agreed to the delivery of these fighter jets by its Western allies on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Japan on May 19, 2023, the NATO countries have in fact opted to make a certain amount available free of charge from their Fighter planes in Kiev. And this is both out of altruism and because for some of them (ie the Netherlands and Denmark, but also Norway, Belgium and Poland) it is time to abandon the old models and switch to the F-35 Lightning II.

According to Breaking Defense, the Netherlands has a well-structured program in place that aims, among other things, to convert Ukrainian air force pilots – who have particular experience with Soviet-type aircraft such as the MiG-29 – into fighter jets used by Ukraine and NATO countries . This includes some language improvement, with proficiency in English being essential to being able to fly an F-16 in optimal conditions.

Problem: Ukraine is one of the least gifted European countries when it comes to speaking the language of Shakespeare: it ranks 28th out of 32 nations according to a ranking published in 2018. According to a US Air Force analyst, the training could take anywhere from four to six months, mainly for language reasons… but not only.

Grab the tongue and find the buttons

As Popular Mechanics explains, the soldiers of the Ukrainian Air Force also have to relearn a whole grammar of piloting. Being used to a particular control arrangement over years or even decades, they have to acquire new habits and new reflexes, as western aircraft are designed very differently.

This long-term work is likely to be crucial, however, as Ukraine suffered significant air losses in the first 16 months of the war against Russia. Nineteen out of forty-three MiG-29s destroyed, a dozen fewer Su-27 fighters, out of twenty-six total: the toll is heavy.

The profile of the pilots is probably not in vain. Almost all of them are at least 30 years old and can only rely on their experience and not on their skills in electronics – since the majority have never completed any current training on this topic.

NATO’s deployment of F-16 aircraft coupled with a solid update of pilot skills should allow Ukraine to catch its breath and draw new blood against the Russian adversary, their drones and their cruise missiles. The start of training is scheduled for this summer of 2023, which in all likelihood will allow the Ukrainian Air Force to face the next winter of 2023-2024 with a replenished squadron and pilots perfectly skilled in handling the F-16.

Fatima Sister Lucia becomes Venerable Heroic Virtues Recognized

Fatima, Sister Lucia becomes Venerable. Heroic Virtues Recognized

For most of public opinion, her name is linked to the Third Secret of Fatima, messages entrusted to three Portuguese shepherd children by Our Lady in 2017. Now the decree on heroic virtues, promulgated today with the approval of Pope Francis, renders them venerable. brings Sister Lucia dos Santos back to her truest dimension: a Christian who has witnessed with her own life of faithfulness to the Gospel. Certainly a Christian who witnessed an extraordinary event like the apparition of the Virgin on May 13, 1917 in Cova da Iria (five more will follow, by October) when she was 10 years old while she was in the company of her two little ones Cousins: Jacinta and Francesco Marto (7 and 9 years old respectively).

Four other Servants of God are also venerated with Sister Lucia dos Santos, including two Italians: Don Antonio Pagani of the Order of Friars Minor, founder of the Society of the dismissed Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, and Anna Cantalupo of the Society of the Daughters of Mercy of San Vincenzo de’ Paoli. Also honored was the martyrdom of twenty victims of the Spanish Civil War in 1936: priests, seminarians, lay people and lay people being blessed.

The third secret was revealed in 2000

Much has been written and all is known about the apparitions of Fatima, as well as the three messages that the Virgin entrusted to the three Portuguese shepherd children. Particular attention was always paid to the third, written by Sister Lucia in a letter addressed to the Bishop of Leira in 1944, the contents of which could not have been disclosed before 1960, but which remained secret – by decision of the Bishop of Leira, popes who have been in contact since that date followed until 2000, when in Fatima, on the occasion of the beatification of Jacinta and Francesco Marto, the two visionaries who died when they were children, John Paul II decided to make this public and also to make a statement. Rite attended by Sister Lucy, then 93 years old, who also confirmed the interpretation of the third secret and recognized in history the attack that John Paul II suffered precisely on May 13, 1981 in St. Peter’s Square.

The desire for a normal religious life

But Lucia dos Santos, born in Aljustrel on March 28, 1907, was not only a visionary to whom Our Lady appeared. After the events of 1917, he remained in Fatima until 1921 (in the meantime Francesco had died in 1919 and Jacinta the following year) to enter the College of Vilar in Porto incognito with the Dorothea sisters. In 1925 she became a postulant of the same congregation and made her temporary vows on October 3, 1928 and her perpetual vows on October 3, 1934. Evidently the events of Fatima continued to haunt her religious life. In the period between 1935 and 1941, commissioned by the Bishop of Leira José Alves Correia da Silva, he wrote four documents entitled “Memoirs” in which he described the events of the apparitions that he witnessed and greeted in the company of Francisco and Jacinta. These texts also include the so-called “Third Secret”.

He met Paul VI. and John Paul II

In order to live her vocation more intensely, it was Sister Lucia herself (who had changed her name to Sister Lucia of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart) who, in 1948, chose the Carmelite Order and asked to join the Carmel of Coimbra. Here she spent her life. For the rest of his life he followed the monastic rhythms of prayer and work. Carmelo, which was the destination of several Church officials to meet Sister Lucia (including the then Patriarch of Venice Albino Luciani, later John Paul I). He also met Paul VI three times (1982, 1991 and 2000) in Fatima. (1967) and John Paul II together. “He heroically lived the virtue of the faith, both in the way he faced the ecclesiastical and civil procedures surrounding the apparitions and in attempting to do God’s will in all things and help others gain their trust to be strengthened in him”, says the website of the Dicastery of the Causes of Saints -. His long life was marked by heroic hope and a deep desire to “go to heaven.” He died on February 13, 2005, a few weeks before John Paul II, with whom he developed a special and intense relationship. Always under the gaze of the Madonna, to whom both were devoted.
