Historic fires: Worst-case scenario confirmed for Lebel-sur-Quévillon – Teller Report

For the citizens of Lebel-sur-Quévillon, the worst-case scenario is confirmed, as the mayor announced that his city’s citizens will have to evacuate the area for the second time by 6:30 p.m. on Thursday due to the meteoric progression of the forest fires.

• Also read: The citizens of Lebel-sur-Quévillon are still uncertain

Guy Lafrenière confirmed the information at a press conference on the city’s Facebook page.

“Unfortunately, Route 113 North is now blocked by fire. The fire is now crossing the street on the north side of 113 to reach Chapais and Chibougamau. For this reason, civil security strongly recommends the complete evacuation of the city. The evacuation order is effective immediately. “You must have left at 6:30 tonight,” he said in the middle of the day.

The hot and dry weather of the past few days has accelerated the progress of the fire, which is spreading east and north of Lebel-sur-Quévillon in North-du-Québec.

Recall that the 2,000 citizens of the community were allowed to return to their homes last weekend after being away from their homes for 16 days.

Many of them had found refuge in Senneterre, in Abitibi-Témiscamingue.

More details to come.

The low-cost airline Viva Air disappears

Colombia’s corporate watchdog on Thursday morning announced the seizure and confiscation of all assets and rights of low-cost airline Viva Air. A decision that ends all business activities after 14 years of existence. It also ends a long process of financial agony in which the company has used every lifeline at its disposal to avoid outright bankruptcy. The failed business integration project with Avianca and the failed attempt to benefit from a business restructuring process were useless.

The Medellín-based company, which has a subsidiary in Peru, filed on June 20 to initiate the liquidation process. A decision by the shareholders’ meeting, chaired by its President Francisco Lalinde, after concluding at the end of May that, despite its best efforts, Viva does not have the financial means to continue flying operations, as stated in the AGM resolution Supersociedades. In this way, a company that ranked second by volume of business in the local market disappears, leaving more than 16,000 affected passengers on the ground after ceasing its activities.

After the hard blow to the Colombian aviation market, the regulator has stated that “the process begins with assets of US$452,818,480 in thousand pesos”. A value, he adds, that needs to be adjusted and “really determined at the time of the trial judge’s approval of the asset register at the appropriate stage of the proceedings.” The regulator’s review also found that the business recovery agreement was useless after Avianca’s refusal had to continue a merger process in which there had been everything: speculation, lawsuits from competitors, breaches of competition rules or changes in the board of the flag carrier.

Analysts have been pondering the possibility of such an outcome for months, and it puts Ultra Air, the other low-cost company struggling to emerge from the abyss, in a very tricky spot. In any case, an important chapter in the history of aviation in Colombia has closed, with low-cost airlines opening up the market to travelers who previously had no access to them. And although there are other companies in the same segment, such as Easy Jet or the newcomer Jet Smart, the conditions and operation of the business must be reconsidered by the authorities, according to analysts.

The Superintendency of Companies’ resolution stresses that the decision aims to protect “the company’s few assets” and “the rights of its most vulnerable creditors, as is the case with workers.” Factors that have prevented Viva from fleeing include the embargoes and other constraints imposed by creditors that have hampered the ability to administer the assets; or the termination of aircraft leases and the obligation to return them.

A collection of obstacles for a company that has collapsed after the pandemic. Now there is a commercial offer between the active airlines to take over the routes abandoned by Viva and a possible increase in ticket prices. A bitter end for the yellow birds and the more than 4,000 direct and indirect employees who made operations possible for more than a decade.

Russia: American journalist Evan Gershkovich remains in detention by the judiciary

A Moscow court on Thursday rejected the application for the release of the American journalist Evan Gershkovich and confirmed the extension of his pre-trial detention until August 30 on charges of espionage which he had denied.

After a closed hearing, a Moscow City Court judge decided “not to agree” to Evan Gershkovich’s appeal against his detention, a local AFP journalist said.

In late May, the Wall Street Journal reporter appealed the extension of his pre-trial detention.

Before the hearing began on Thursday, he appeared before the press in the glass cage reserved for inmates, wearing jeans and a black T-shirt.

“We were extremely disappointed that his appeal was rejected,” US Ambassador to Russia Lynne Tracy told reporters after the hearing.

She said since an initial visit in April, three requests for consular visits to Evan Gershkovich in his prison had been turned down by Russian authorities.

“Despite everything, Evan continued to show remarkable strength and resilience in the courtroom today under these very difficult circumstances,” said the American diplomat.

The journalist’s parents, Mikhail Gershkovich and Ella Milman, who were also present at the hearing, as well as the reporter’s lawyers declined to comment to the press.

Evan Gershkovich, 32, was arrested in Russia in late March while reporting from Yekaterinburg (Urals) and prosecuted for espionage.

The Kremlin says he was arrested “flagrante delicto” without providing any evidence as the file is classified as secret.

Evan Gershkovich, his employer, the Wall Street Journal, and the American authorities categorically deny these allegations, which carry a 20-year prison sentence.

“The allegations against him are unfounded, he is an innocent journalist,” said the US ambassador to Russia on Thursday.

Evan Gershkovich, who previously worked for AFP in Moscow, is the first foreign journalist to be arrested for espionage in Russia since the fall of the Soviet Union. He is currently being held in Moscow’s Lefortovo prison.

The star of Mamma Mia! was robbed on Monday by a man who had also been urinating and defecating in his neighbor’s garden. According to TMZ, LAPD officers quickly arrived at the actor’s home after receiving reports of a man wandering the comedian’s and his neighbor’s property.

Sources told the website that the intruder was seen relieving himself in the neighbor’s garden before rummaging through the bins and proceeding to the 70-year-old actor’s home. The man in question entered the Bond star’s property through the utility room, where he appeared to be cleaning himself.

He fled the scene and was making his way to the beach when police arrived in front of the house. However, he was later found by a police helicopter hiding in the rocks along the coast. He was arrested and accused of stealing the water he used to bathe.

The actor’s wife, Keely Shaye Smith, was apparently home at the time of the incident, although it’s unclear if Pierce Brosnan was also present.

Housing Legault is becoming increasingly disconnected

Housing: Legault is becoming increasingly disconnected

The CAQ government seriously needs to start paying attention. He multiplies insensitive statements about housing construction and thereby risks damaging his image.

Who really thinks that tenants stay tenants in Quebec just because they don’t want to invest?

Who really believes that rising house prices are only related to rising wages?

However, this is what the Legault government claims.

When François Legault says that the rise in house prices is “a consequence of rising average wages”, he is wrong.

He obviously wasn’t looking at the numbers.

Between 2010 and 2020, house prices rose twice as fast as wages.

And the increases have intensified in recent years.

In 2021, property prices increased by 24%. In 2022, it was 14%, according to the Quebec Real Estate Association.

According to the Institut de la statistique du Québec, the average hourly wage increased by 2.2% in 2021. In 2022 it was 5.8%.

Tenants were not immune to the rise either.

Last year, rents in Quebec rose an average of 13.7%, according to announcements on Kijiji. In some cities we are talking about a 40% increase. According to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, it is likely to increase further by 30% through 2025.

One in four tenants spends more than 30% of their income on housing. For every tenth it is more than 50%. People who have to cut corners somewhere else and have no leeway.

According to Le Journal, in 2022, the average Quebecer has not seen a 30% salary increase like MPs or 15% like Quebec’s top 30 CEOs.

These CEOs make an average of $9 million, or 153 times the average salary for Quebec workers.

The reasons

François Legault is right when he says that house prices are rising because of a lack of supply.

The increase in population also plays a major role.

It should not be overlooked that interest rates have been at a low point since the 2008 financial crisis.

Once the government understands the root of the problem, it doesn’t seem to come up with solutions very quickly.

It’s a big social problem

And it becomes a political vulnerability for François Legault. Especially since the housing shortage affects all of Quebec. Parents worry about their children. Industries cannot recruit workers in the regions…

The CAQ leader has long been in alignment with his populace on many issues, such as nationalism, secularism, managing the pandemic…

But he has to be more sensitive to housing issues and act quickly. Politicians can get involved on specific issues… talk to Philippe Couillard, who’s always trying to get groceries for $75.

WCPR-FM’s director sent the song to a manager named Phin Daly, who passed it on to De Goot Entertainment’s Bill McGathy – which eventually led to them signing with the record label working on The Better Life album.

Daniel Adair was the band’s drummer from 2002 to 2006.

IDF spokesman slams settler uprisings that ‘create terror’; far right MK: It was a protest – The Times of Israel

The chief spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces on Thursday condemned rampages by settlers in the West Bank towns of Turmus Ayya and Urif, which have seen hundreds set fire to homes, cars and fields and terrorized residents, and the death of a Palestinian man in unclear circumstances.

Speaking to Army Radio, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari acknowledged that the IDF had failed to prevent the unrest and described the attack as “very serious”.

“This is an incident that creates terror and escalation, and takes the population not involved in the terror and fuels it [toward extremism]while preventing the IDF from fighting terror in operational activities,” he added.

Meanwhile, religious Zionist MP Simcha Rothman, the far-right chairman of the Knesset’s constitutional committee and one of the leading proponents of judicial reform, compared the violent rioters to anti-government protesters and complained to Army Radio that “if you protest it [judicial] “A reform you can demand to take up arms and be violent, but if you’re protesting an ‘inconsequential’ like killing four people, isn’t that okay?”

The protests against government efforts to curtail the powers of the judiciary have been largely peaceful, although some have seen limited clashes between activists and police, particularly as the former attempted to block main roads.

Rothman may also have been referring to some sporadic comments from protesters that suggested the possible use of force to combat the overhaul. For example, prominent lawyer David Hodek said in February, “If someone is forcing me to live under a dictatorship and I have no other choice, I will not hesitate to use live fire.” Hodek later apologized when police opened an investigation .

No arrests have been reported in the riots in Turmus Ayya, during which settlers set fire to a school and tried to set fire to a mosque, Haaretz reported. Vandals from the Yitzhar settlement told Kan News that they had cut power to the nearby Palestinian village of Urif.

The Palestinian Authority’s Ministry of Health said one Palestinian was killed and another 12 injured in the attack by settlers and subsequent clashes with Israeli troops and police in Turmus Ayya. At least four Palestinians were injured by gunfire, including one in serious condition, the ministry said.

The man killed was 27-year-old Omar Qattin, who local residents said was a father of two young children and worked as an electrician for the local community.

It was unclear if Qattin was the one shot by police, although Palestinian witnesses said the man killed was nowhere near Israeli forces when he was shot. It was also unclear who shot the other four Palestinians.

Several countries, including the United States, strongly condemned the killing spree.

Tensions between Israel and the Palestinians have escalated over the past year, as the military conducted raids in the West Bank almost nightly and a series of deadly Palestinian terrorist attacks.

Since the beginning of the year, 24 people have been killed in Palestinian attacks in Israel and the West Bank, including 17-year-old Nachman Mordoff, 17-year-old Elisha Anteman, 21-year-old Harel Masood and 64-year-old Ofer Fayerman, who were killed on Tuesday.

According to a Times of Israel tally, 132 Palestinians were killed in the West Bank during that period, most of them in clashes with security forces or in attacks, but some were innocent civilians and others were killed under unclear circumstances.

A new West Bank outpost was set up a few kilometers from the settlement on Wednesday evening in response to the Eli attack.

Photos provided by Peace Now showed five prefabricated metal wall buildings being erected on the site, just outside the northern West Bank settlement of Ma’ale Levona, across from Route 60 from Eli.

Also featured in the images are heavy earthmoving bulldozers and backhoe drills, as well as a newly dug dirt access road to the site.

The IDF, the Department of Defense, the civilian administration, and the office of Treasury Secretary Bezalel Smotrich — who is an adjunct minister in the Department of Defense responsible for West Bank civil affairs — did not immediately respond to a request for comment on how such complex, illegal construction work went on without their intervention were carried out and whether the site would be evacuated.

In addition, dozens and possibly hundreds of settler activists have established themselves in the illegal, often-evacuated Evyatar outpost several kilometers north of Eli, hosting events and activities there.
