The international financial system is unfair and calls for ‘serious reforms’ in favor of global justice: Guterres UN news

The international financial architecture has failed in its mission to provide a global safety net for developing countries and requires a number of important reforms, said the UN Secretary-General in Paris on Thursday during the summit convened by the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, for a new global financing agreement.

António Guterres attributed the failure of this structure to the time of its construction after World War II, as it reflects political and economic power dynamics far removed from current reality.

“Nearly 80 years later, the global financial architecture is outdated, dysfunctional and unfair.. It is no longer able to meet the needs of the 21st century world: A multipolar world characterized by deeply integrated economies and financial markets. But also shaped by geopolitical tensions and growing systemic risks,” he said.

The UN chief added that the current international financial institutions are “too small and limited” when it comes to fulfilling their mandate and serving everyone, especially the most vulnerable countries.

A system that promotes inequality

However, the Secretary General not only referred to the size of the international financial system, but also broadened his criticism and accused it of exacerbating inequalities.

“In 2021, the International Monetary Fund allocated more than $650 billion in Special Drawing Rights and we welcome this decision. The countries of the European Union, including my own, received $160 billion. African countries: 34 million,” he explained.

While acknowledging that this distribution was in accordance with applicable law, he called it “immoral”.

“A financial architecture that does not represent today’s world risks leading to its own fragmentation in a world where geopolitics itself is a factor of fragmentation‘ he clarified.

Are you paying the debt or the needs of the population?

The financial system crisis is affecting the organization itself and has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“Halfway to the 2030 deadline, The Sustainable Development Goals are getting farther and farther away every day. Even the most basic goals to fight hunger and poverty have receded after decades of progress. Yes, by 2023 more than 750 million people will not have enough to eat. And tens of millions more are on the brink of extreme poverty.”

Regarding the pandemic and Russian aggression, he recalled that while rich countries could print money to restart their economies, developing countries have been unable to do so and are currently facing exorbitant borrowing costs, which are up to eight times higher than those of developed countries.

“Many leaders face a nagging dilemma: pay their debts or meet the needs of their people. Many African countries spend more on debt servicing than on health care. (…) Currently 52 countries are in default or are dangerously close to default.”

The renovation work can start immediately

To solve this crisis, Guterres proposed the implementation of “serious reforms”, such as declaring a new “Bretton Woods moment” (similar to the first model of a fully negotiated monetary regime to regulate monetary relations between independent states) or activation its new policy report, which contains a detailed blueprint for reshaping the global financial architecture.

“But as we work on the deep reforms needed, we can take urgent action today to meet the urgent needs of developing and emerging economies. That’s why I proposed a recovery plan for the Sustainable Development Goals that would invest $500 billion a year in sustainable development and climate action.”

The Secretary-General emphasized that there is no need to wait for the necessary deep reform of the international financial system to change course because if world leaders take action and implement it immediately, “Great steps towards global justice” could be taken.

India’s pompous state visit: Biden welcomes Modi

President Joe Biden courted the world’s most populous country with a pompous reception of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a US guest of state. In a bilateral meeting between the two on Thursday, according to the US side, several economic and military agreements should be decided, including the sale of American drones to India.

The Biden administration is aggressively trying to link India more closely as a major player in the Indo-Pacific and on the international stage. However, several politicians in the US Congress have expressed concern about the human rights situation in India.

Biden said he was “convinced that the US-India relationship will be one of the defining relationships of the 21st century.” It is about “two great nations, two great friends, two great powers” who can determine the course of the century. “The challenges and opportunities facing the world in this century require India and the United States to work together and take the lead together.”

Several members of the US cabinet attended Modi’s formal welcoming ceremony, including Vice President Kamala Harris, whose mother is Indian. Thousands of Americans of Indian descent were also invited. In addition to talks between Biden and Modi and a press appearance by the two, a speech by the Indian Prime Minister to both chambers of the US Congress is also planned, as well as a festive state banquet at the White House in the evening.

Unlike regular business visits, state visits are accompanied by special formal pomp, like a state banquet. Modi is only the third foreign guest to receive this honor during Biden’s term. French President Emmanuel Macron paid a state visit to the United States last December. South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol followed in late April.

According to US intelligence, the two heads of government wanted to seal several new partnerships during the visit, including the sale of MQ-9B armed drones from the US to New Delhi, US investments in semiconductor production in India and new cooperation on travel. space and technology sectors.

India has overtaken China as the most populous country. With about 1.4 billion people, it is also the largest democracy in the world and has growing political and economic influence, especially in the Indo-Pacific. The Biden administration is trying to counter China’s quest for power in the region and has therefore significantly promoted partnerships with other countries in the region, including the so-called quadruple alliance with India, Japan and Australia.

The fact that Biden rolled out the red carpet for the Indian prime minister in this way was also the subject of criticism. Modi, of the Hindu nationalist BJP, has been the country’s prime minister since 2014. During his tenure, India dropped several places in the ranking of democracy and freedom of the press. Critics complain that religious minorities are discriminated against in the predominantly Hindu country.

Prior to Modi’s visit, more than 70 US politicians from the House of Representatives and Senate expressed concern about the human rights situation in India and wrote an open letter asking Biden to address these issues at the meeting. They warned that there were worrying signs that political rights and freedom of expression were being curtailed in India, that religious intolerance towards minorities was on the rise and freedom of the press was suffering. The White House said ahead of time that the president would not shy away from these tough questions. Individual lawmakers also wanted to boycott Modi’s speech in Congress because of these concerns.

Biden said of Modi’s welcome: “Equality before the law, freedom of expression, religious pluralism, diversity of our peoples – these fundamental principles have endured and evolved – despite the challenges in our nations’ history.” Modi, for his part, said the two countries were “proud of their diversity”.

Another not so easy issue between the two countries is the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. So far, India has taken a neutral stance on this and does not support Western sanctions. The country maintains good relations both with Western countries and with Russia, on which much of its military equipment depends. During the war, India also started to buy more oil from Russia. The US, on the other hand, is Ukraine’s closest ally in the conflict and is at the forefront of the international alliance against Russia.

The attractive and powerful Samsung Galaxy S21 FE comes at the best price thanks to this offer – Frandroid

If the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE was criticized for being too expensive when it was released, it is regularly promoted to offer it at a more appropriate price. This is currently the case with Orange, where you can get it for €329 instead of €759 at launch if you trade it in for your old smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FESource: Anthony Wonner – Frandroid

The last representative of the FE range for the time being, the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE could have hit the mark upon its release if its price had not been so high, although being more accessible than the original models is right in the FE’s DNA. It is better to wait for promotions to get your hands on this smartphone, much more interesting when the price is lower, which is currently the case with a discount of 430 euros compared to the launch price.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 FE in a few points

  • A beautiful AMOLED screen that refreshes at 120Hz
  • Excellent performance with the Snapdragon 888
  • A versatile photo module

Starting at €759, the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE is now available from Orange at a special price of €329 thanks to a €220 discount and a €70 return bonus for exchanging it with your old smartphone. when you pick it up via Click & Collect.

If the offer mentioned in this article is no longer available after that, please see below for further promotions for the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE. The table is updated automatically.

Where can I buy this?
Samsung Galaxy S21 FE at the best price?

A neat design, but sacrificed

In order to lower the price of its Fan Edition, Samsung has decided to abandon the aluminum frame of the outline and the photo module, opting for all-plastic. However, this plastic coating not only has disadvantages, it also makes the smartphone lighter, which does not prevent flawless workmanship. It is also robust as it has an IP68 certification and Gorilla Glass Victus glass. However, it is necessary to provide a shell because the plastic is easily scratched.

Thanks to the know-how of the South Korean manufacturer, who makes its own panels, the screen exudes premium. This 6.4-inch AMOLED panel has a Full HD+ resolution (2340 x 1080 pixels) and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. With the infinite contrast ratio, the maximum brightness of 700 cd/m² and the colorimetry are excellent. Suffice it to say that this screen is a marvelous sight whether for browsing, watching a series or playing a game.

The performance of the Snapdragon 888

While the classic S21 ran with an Exynos 2100 SoC, the South Korean manufacturer uses Qualcomm and its Snapdragon 888. This processor is supported here by 6 GB of RAM. If the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE can chain basic tasks smoothly and without loss of performance, it is easily dominated by the classic S21 in the gaming area. In our test, it struggled a bit running Fortnite at 60 FPS, and some slowdowns persisted even at 30 FPS.

On the back of the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE there is a successful and versatile photo module, there is a 12 Mpx main sensor, a 12 Mpx ultra wide-angle lens and an 8 Mpx x3 telephoto lens. It also has a 32 Mpx front sensor, but it is more restrictive than anything else and, above all, not the best module of this smartphone. Finally, the move to the Snapdragon 888 may not have been entirely good, especially in terms of autonomy. Thanks to the 4,500 mAh battery, you can charge this smartphone every night before bed.

Following the world premiere of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One in Rome on Monday, critics and fans who had the opportunity to see the film early on shared mostly flattering praise on social media.

The film, which follows 2018’s Fallout, was pushed back 90 minutes at its premiere after Cruise, 60, had an unscheduled meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Variety reported.

That apparently frustrated audiences, who were reportedly tired of watching repetitive footage of red carpet interviews at the Auditorium della Conciliazione.

However, the audience changed their mood with some “warm applause” after the man of the hour finally arrived, along with his director and longtime collaborator Christopher McQuarrie.

A majority of the main cast also attended the premiere, including Cruise’s former girlfriend Hayley Atwell and her co-stars Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Simon Pegg, Pom Kelmentieff, Shea Wigham and Esai Morales.

Reportedly, audiences in Rome were ecstatic when the Eternal City was featured in one scene on screen, and some people at the premiere cheered Cruise and shouted “Bravo Tom!” at the screen.

The latest part of Mission: Impossible premiered in the legendary Italian city as part of the Rome Film Festival after a significant portion of the film was shot in the capital.

Initial reactions to the film on Twitter have been overwhelmingly positive.

Gizmodo and io9 writer Germain Lussier called the new film “amazing” and said it has a “dynamic, timely story.”

“Excellent new characters. Huge variety of action and one final set piece that ranks 2-3 all-time for the franchise,” he added.

Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes’ Erik Davis boasted that he had the “absolute best time” watching Cruise’s new film.

He added it was “an impeccably made action film that never fails to entertain.”

“Each action sequence is long, crazy and intense. “The story is expansive and sprawling, but I like how it felt complete and set you longingly for what’s to come.”

Film critic Scott Mantz tweeted that Dead Reckoning was “worth the wait”!

He added that it was “absolutely fantastic” and called it the “best ‘mission’ yet” for the series.

“Great story, great cast, incredible action that will keep you hooked,” he continued, explaining that Cruise “outdid himself with BEST ACTION FILM OF THE SUMMER!”

Collider’s Perri Nemiroff called Mission: Impossible 7 “another winner of the franchise.”

“Once again, the production value is overwhelming as some of the clearest and most exciting set pieces were photographed in a way that really makes you feel like you’re in the middle of the action,” she enthused. “The emphasis on getting things on camera makes a HUGE difference and you can feel it.”

Geeks of Color’s Dorian Parks said Dead Reckoning is “potentially the best part of the series.”

“The scenes are stunning and the action sequences are really at the highest level.” “On the biggest screen available it’s a must see,” he wrote.

Entertainment industry reporter Jeff Sneider gave qualified praise that Dead Reckoning was “VERY good,” but lamented that it had less emotional intensity than Cruise’s hugely popular sequel, Top Gun: Maverick.

Viewers will have a chance to see for themselves when Cruise’s latest blockbuster hits theaters on July 12.

However, according to the Instagram profile Segue a Cami, Valmir Reis and Karen Bacic are no longer together. The end of the marriage would have come after the lawyer found out that Valmir was married.

According to profile information, Karen split just days after the ceremony. Among other things, he is said to have kept in touch with his alleged girlfriend during the recording of the show.

On social media, Karen and Valmir continue to share behindthescenes pictures of the reality show and thank the public for their affection, but have not directly commented on the alleged split. The lawyer wrote a text to report the experience without mentioning Valmir. In the meantime, he used Instagram to leave a message. “Rumors shouldn’t help you, they should ruin you. The truth is only one… See you soon. Stay ready,” he wrote.

“There have been months of psychological preparation to uncover a challenging experiment that makes us nervous on more than one level. Gratitude for embarking on this journey of intensities is confused with fear of the internet court judging from your decision to have a real body to accusations of excess or lack of attitude. But that’s a reflection of life off camera, so I’ve watched the past few seasons a few times based on edited minute shots,” Bacic noted.

“Thank you for the opportunity to experience all of this and inspire even more empathy for those who have been through this tumultuous and necessary emotional process. “Now life is clear, the experience has taught me a lot and when we meet again we’ll tell you how it all went,” he promised.

Survivor Quebec: Chris explains what prompted his decision to eliminate JJ – Showbizz.net

Christophe and Kimberly’s elimination of Jean-Junior was the most significant gesture of Survivor Quebec season 1.

On the other hand, the decision was not easy for Chris, since he had sworn allegiance to his friend.

“This week was awful,” Christophe recalls. “One day I’m for the Three Musketeers, the other day I’m fighting for Kim, then I’m back with the Three Musketeers, I was so messed up, it was so hard for me, I felt trapped between the two.” Finally I confessed everything to Kim. She tried to find a strategy. There were many times where the strategy worked to the end and eventually someone got an immunity chain and that changed our plans, we had to find another option. The goal was absolutely not to take my best friend JJ out of the adventure, but to save Kim. Ultimately, the path was to take it a step further and do it before you might have finished it. »

He clearly remembers the moment he made his decision. “I was with Kim at the sea, it was night. There was a crazy starry sky. We find a possible option which is to eliminate JJ. It doesn’t excite me that much, but I have to do something. I say to Kim, “I don’t know, I don’t think it can work, but it would be so good.” And at the same time, a gigantic shooting star passes overhead. Then I look at Kim and say to him: “That’s it! I’ll do it, I won’t reverse my decision.”

He adds: “We’re walking and about 30 meters away from us is JJ looking at the stars. There he said to me, “Have you seen the mega rising star?!” In my head, there’s no telling how bad I was. I was like, ‘If you knew what she meant, JJ…'”

“I had such a hard time turning off my best friend,” he admits. “He left as a gentleman. In all the scenarios I’ve dreamed up, I never thought he could make me feel so good. Every time we went before the jury after that, he would smile at me and say, “I love you,” but I could clearly see from his face that he wasn’t feeling well. [Jean-Junior nous racontait récemment que son élimination avait été plus difficile qu’il l’avait laissé transparaître]. He just wanted me to feel good, he didn’t want me to feel bad that I eliminated him. Seriously, JJ will always be my friend. I have so much respect for this guy. »

The friendship between JJ and Chris was inspiring. Moreover, an unprecedented moment from the last tribal council proves it all the more. See it here.

We also invite you to read our interview with Kimberly, with whom we spoke about representativeness, here.
