Scorching heat is currently prevailing in large parts of the province. The northwestern sectors in particular, including Matagami and Chibougamau, are experiencing a heat wave with temperatures exceeding 32 degrees. The south of the province is also being hit by the heat, although we are closer to seasonal norms in these sectors. From Friday, however, the mercury will drop and there is a risk of thunderstorms.

Danger of thunderstorms in two stages

A system could bring the risk of thunderstorms in the western part of the province as early as Friday. As the cold front passes, a significant amount of convection energy is available for storm cell formation. Abitibi-Témiscamingue and Nord-du-Québec can expect heavy rain and squalls in the afternoon after crossing these cells. Even large hailstones are possible. Lightning could be a factor to watch in these regions, which are still highly prone to wildfires.

As the system continues its course southward, it is the sectors of the St. Lawrence Valley that could suffer late Saturday afternoon. Rainfall could be plentiful from the Outaouais to the Gaspé. Former judge Manuel Penalva, who is on trial these weeks along with five other people for alleged irregularities in the investigation of the case against Bartolomé Cursach, Mallorca’s biggest nightclub businessman, resumed his work at the forefront of the investigation this Thursday and he has accused the two prosecutors who brought the trial of blowing up the trial and renounced key witnesses and reports corroborating the businessman’s alleged mafia maneuvers. At various points in the statement, the person who was the chief instructor in the Cursach case was questioned about the alleged information leaks to the media. Penalva declined to delve into the matter after some of the prosecutor’s evidence was voided, but he wanted to stress that he was unable to examine many of them because they had never been brought to his attention. “There were leaks from day one, as is the case with all media issues. “It seems that we have discovered gunpowder, always have been and always will be,” he defended. The prosecutor’s interrogation lasted almost five hours, during which he also questioned the investigation into the so-called ORA case, which led to the arrest of Palma City Council officials and PP Councilor Álvaro Gijón. Israel on Thursday demolished the home of a Palestinian accused of killing a soldier in October 2022 in the northern occupied West Bank, which has been the scene of a fresh outbreak of violence in recent days.

Since the beginning of the week, twenty people have been killed in Israeli military incursions or attacks by Palestinian raiders or Israeli settlers in the West Bank, bringing the death toll in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to over 200 a year.

When Israeli soldiers marched into Nablus, a large Palestinian city in the northern West Bank, overnight, they emerged at dawn after destroying Kamal Jouri’s apartment building, witnesses told AFP.

Israel has accused Kamal Jouri of carrying out an attack in October 2022 that killed soldier Ido Baroukh. He is being held by Israel, as is Osama Tawil, who is also accused of involvement in the attack and whose home was destroyed on June 15, the Israeli army said in a press release.

The army confirmed the destruction in the Palestinian Authority Zone and said that during the operation “rioters opened fire on the soldiers, damaging a military vehicle”.

According to a Palestinian intelligence source, the last Israeli drone strike in the West Bank was in August 2006.

At least 174 Palestinians, 25 Israelis, one Ukrainian and one Italian have been killed in violence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict since the beginning of the year, according to an AFP tally compiled from official Israeli and Palestinian sources.

These statistics include combatants and civilians, including minors, on the Palestinian side and mostly civilians, including minors, and three members of the Arab minority on the Israeli side.
