Two lobster fishermen lose their lives off Miscou – Acadie Nouvelle

Two fishermen drowned off Miscou on Saturday morning, the first day of the lobster fishing season in this region of the Acadian Peninsula.

At around 8:50 a.m., the Lamèque RCMP was alerted to the emergency situation and reported that two people had fallen into the water about seven kilometers offshore and were not visible.

The Canadian Coast Guard immediately began searching and found an unconscious 58-year-old, who unfortunately died a short time later.

The search continued but the second person, 33, was also found dead. Their names have not been published.

A third man was in the boat. He didn’t go overboard.

According to the RCMP, the two victims are from Lamèque, but the boat on which they took place has Miscou as its home port.

A helicopter, two planes and three boats from the joint rescue coordination center and several local fishing boats were involved in the search and rescue operations.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada will participate in the investigation along with a member of the New Brunswick Coroner’s Office.

dangerous day

The first day of lobster fishing is often the most dangerous of the season because the boats are loaded with dozens of traps stacked on top of each other.

Fishermen also know that launching cables are particularly dangerous because they can grab a foot and drag the person with them.

The Miscou quay was bustling with activity in the middle of the day. Dozens of fishermen climbed traps, wired and weighed down with concrete. The season begins tragically, and everyone was obviously aware of the sad event that mowed down two of them.

They did their work like a habit, a routine. They were aware of the risks of the profession and did not want to flaunt their whims. The fishermen know the sea is unforgiving, but they all had in mind the fate that just befell them.

The Acadie-Bathurst member responded on his Facebook page. “My thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends and the entire community of Miscou who are going through difficult times due to an incident that occurred on a fishing boat this morning. Fishing in our regions has been part of our culture for generations. Rest assured that all of the Acadie-Bathurst communities are with you during this painful time.”

In other sectors of the Acadian Peninsula, especially in Caraquet, fishing has started since Sunday.

Sabalenka conquers Madrid again

Sabalenka conquers Madrid again

Madrid, land of Pim, Pam, Pum, the territory where the ball flies beautifully, crowned Aryna Sabalenka for the second time, doubling the Belarusian’s threat to number one Iga Swiatek. The defeat of the Pole (6-3, 3-6 and 6-3, after 2h 25m) offers a nice scenario for the coming weeks, opens up the possibility of a replacement on the throne and, above all, strengthens the conviction of the champion , to whom a portion faith was absent. “Before Australia I learned to be calmer on track and things got a little bit different from there. My relationship with tennis too. Now I have more confidence in myself”, confirms the Minsk winner after a great epilogue in which her ambition triumphed. Right, here she is.

The 25-year-old Sabalenka prevailed in a duel of alternatives in which she starred in the crucial corner, powerful in the third set and accurate when it came to ending the win for her second trophy in the Caja Mágica after gaining two years ago. when she beat Australian Ashleigh Barty. Once again, Madrid rewards speed; Once again she celebrates the best holster on the circuit after last year’s virtuoso tennis was rewarded by Ons Jabeur. Not used to flourishes, the winner pushes and pushes until she drives her opponent out of the ring. His game has a combative vibe, one-two, one-two, with clean whiplash until the ko is reached.

More information

Sabalenka stormed onto the stage and impressed, but the excess momentum punishes this tennis player until she gradually discovers the break. It doesn’t relax, but it doesn’t punish either. And above all read better. Reconciled with herself, she has shown herself to be a fierce competitor, sometimes overwhelming; He’s scoring as always but holding back when he has to and his confidence has skyrocketed. To the spectacularity he has added the plus of control and once that version is reached it becomes very difficult for the rest to counter him. Power, peace and security, the formula for success.

“I won because the cake was so good…” he said before raising the trophy half-jokingly, half-seriously. Darts for organization. The day before, Carlos Alcaraz had posed in front of a giant cake, while the day before she had received a standard-sized one. Well, Sabalenka believes so. It’s no less than anyone else. Smiling and full of character at the same time, she is the main actress this year. She made her first major in Melbourne and now she’s throwing an ordeal at Swiatek, happily installed at the top until the Belarusian has made the final step forward and is giving it her all. Doubts vanished, he finally found peace.

There is no player who has more wins (29) than her this season and who has shown the biggest appetite, especially lately. Added to this is a great development, especially technically. She also has charisma, so needed by the circle of representatives to get involved after the departure of great icon Serena Williams, and she runs for leadership while indecision reigns supreme among the others.

Stuck on her way to the final – she lost just one set to Mayar Sherif in the quarters – Sabalenka threw her punch in that final confrontation with Swiatek, who lacked a daring point at the most delicate moments, and succumbed to his opponent’s incessant cannon fire. The Adelaide and Australian Open champions, the one from Minsk, added her 13th WTA title, her third on clay, and has established herself as the Pole’s formidable rival for the world throne.

At the moment it’s Swiatek’s turn, but in the coming weeks the Pole will have to defend the huge number of points she won a year ago in Rome and Roland Garros, where she triumphed. Therefore, Sabalenka, an ambitious player who has managed to polish herself and correct the serve mistake – a luxury opportunity – offers herself to become an increasingly dominant tennis player. Also a finalist that season at Indian Wells and Stuttgart, he was superior in a match that followed a logical progression until the third set, where disorder began to reign. From there breaks and chaos. The Belarusian’s arm weighed more.

Children mean wealth and prosperity Claudette Dion

“Children mean wealth and prosperity” – Claudette Dion

Claudette Dion is a person who found her place in the sun that was occupied by her sister Celine. During our conversation, she constantly praised her parents and siblings.

She reiterated to me that people wanted to know about her relationship with her sister, Celine, which she described to me as one of love for her sister and pride in what Celine brought to the Dion family. However, I replied that at the end of the week Celine’s film was released, but that today was Claudette’s day, Celine’s godmother.

Claudette, daughter of Adhémar and Thérèse Tanguay-Dion, was born in La Tuque, the third of a family of fourteen children. She is executive director and spokesperson for the Maman Dion Foundation. And we shouldn’t forget his passion for music and the artistic world.

Her father didn’t want to have children.

Dad wanted to be a rich and successful businessman. Mom made her understand that children meant wealth and family prosperity for her.

You lived in La Tuque until you were 4 years old.

My father often left the house because he worked as a lumber driver. Mom thought the house had become too small for the family, which was growing every year.

On the way to Charlemagne.

My aunt had found a job as an upholsterer for my father and we lived on rue Saint-Jacques. My mother then convinced my father to build a house with rents on the second floor that would pay the house taxes.

Final destination: 130, rue Notre-Dame.

My father explained to my mother that paying the taxes was fine, but the children’s many trips to their activities by car or bus had become an impossible mission.

Your father was a butcher.

He was a butcher for a co-op and to tell you the truth he allowed us to be spoiled because he came home with cuts of ham, pork and beef that weren’t being sold.

Her parents set a good example.

My dad worked very hard and mom was the first to cook our lunch and the last to bed to make sure her kids had everything they needed.

Music is an integral part of the family.

My mother playing the violin and my father playing the accordion are unforgettable moments that I still cherish to this day.

stop crying and sing

My mother’s voice still rings in my ears because we often cried while washing the dishes. “Adhemar, bring your accordion to us”. We sang as a family: The Bells of Love.

Her father was an innovator.

There were four of us in one room. Dad put drawers in the walls with our name in front of each drawer. Yes, he put drawers in the walls of our bedrooms.

” I believe in you “.

When my parents played accordion and violin at weddings, I kept the youngest in the family. I will never forget my mother’s words as she left the house: “Claudette, I trust you”.

your first job

My father worked at Metro Quintal, and when I was 13, I worked with him at a clothing company on the weekends. Not to mention the times I mopped and washed the floor at Grandma’s.

Were you athletic at school?

I competed in high jump competitions against other schools. I loved speed skating, but I had a problem I had to overcome. At home there weren’t any more white skates for girls my size, so I skated in my brothers’ skates.

Family holiday.

It was impossible for all of us to get into my father’s car, so my uncle joined us to drive to La Tuque. Mama wanted us to discover Gaspésie, especially since Lake Tanguay bears the name of our grandfather, a great builder in the region.

You have won several dance competitions.

My brother Clément and I attended the Jean Baptiste Meilleur high school in Repentigny. Thanks to the support of our music teacher, who gave us dance lessons during the lunch break, we won several dance competitions.

The phone was almost out of reach.

We must not forget that there were several of us at home. Use of the telephone on the wall was limited to two minutes per call.

The baptism of the twins left you with an unforgettable memory.

The guests arrived at the church. Mama had spent the night knitting their little hats and then preparing food for the visit. “Mom, you’re wearing a beautiful new dress.”

It wasn’t a new dress.

No, it was her Christmas dress, which she had shortened in length and cut off the sleeves to make it look fashionable. I was in awe of my mother as I saw her proudly holding the twins in her arms, in her outfit that she had customized. An extraordinary mother.

The St-François d’Assise crèche has shaped your life.

When I visited the St-François d’Assise crèche in Pointe-aux-Trembles, I was overwhelmed to see so many abandoned children or orphans. I took a childcare class to help these children, including an eight-month-old and his two-year-old sister who I had to teach to walk.

you have a beautiful family

For 30 years now, my spouse Serge has been a wonderful man who tells me after each of my shows that he admires me just as much as when we first met him. I have four wonderful children and 13 grandchildren.

“My grandmother is English and was present at the coronation [de la reine] on black-and-white TV, so I figured I’d have to see it in person,” said Jeremy Keiton, 20, of Toronto.

With a friend from Vancouver who is studying with him in Belfast, England, the young man traveled more than 600 km to personally attend the celebrations for his English grandmother.

“She has always followed the monarchy and has kept many of her English traditions. It means a lot to me to be there for her,” he continued.

A dream come true

In front of Buckingham Palace, Montreal native Noelle Attala, who now lives in Ottawa, realized her dream of attending a royal event.

“When the Queen died I thought there was going to be a coronation,” said the 34-year-old, who took the opportunity to travel to England for the first time.

“I managed to see the royal carriage. The king’s face was hidden on the driveway, but on the way back I had a perfect view of both of them [souverains]and to Kate and her children too!” she exclaimed, smiling, her eyes sparkling.

The same goes for Leonard Lyn, who traveled all the way from Ontario with his family to attend the coronation in person. It arrived in the UK on Friday.

“We wanted to take part in the global celebrations of the coronation of Canada’s King sitting on the Maple Throne,” he said with a smile.

“Being right in the heart of High Park during the coronation is wonderful. It’s definitely a once-in-a-lifetime event,” said brother-in-law Steve of Fergus, Ontario, with the flag prominently displayed on his back.

An evening in the front row

Other motivated Canadians even camped out in the rain to set up a site of their choice for the passage of the royal carriage during the coronation.

“It was wonderful. The place was full, people were in a good mood. Little kids, grandparents. People were singing. It was really beautiful,” said Catherine Roberts along with her daughter Madeleine Lavrence, who turns 21 on Sunday.

The two Newfoundland women, who now live near Hamilton, Ontario, attended the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee last June.

“We were there and it was his last public appearance. And then we got to his funeral and we waited in line for 11 hours to pay his respects,” added the royal family’s #1 fan.

The best pastry chef in Quebec

The desserts have something to impress. When successful, they are true masterpieces that fill the greediest bellies and manage to please the sweetest of teeth. But beware: they are not easy to master. You have to be meticulous, use good doses and cook at the right temperature. Even though competitions rain down all over the world, Quebec pastry chefs have nothing to envy to their foreign counterparts. In this show, 10 competitors have to tame cakes, tarts and other desserts.

Routine has taken over and meals are getting harder and harder to plan? Worse, anxiety interfered with preparing lunch and dinner? Marina Orsini opens the doors of her kitchen wide to welcome one chef per show who will share two creations. Steak, salad, eggs, fish: everything is allowed! Put on your apron and get into action, or at least take notes because it’s your chance to take a breather!

Granted, it’s a movie, so fiction. It’s also a comedy that doesn’t always fly very high. However, the meeting between a star of the kitchen (Jean Reno) and one of the most promising chefs (Michaël Youn) will lead to a celebration of flavors, colors and textures. Interesting culinary ideas will emerge from this “confrontation”. Yes, it’s getting hot in the kitchen; However, this heat has a positive impact on what is found on gourmet plates.

The passion and perseverance of the people who work in the kitchen is nice to see. Fortunately, many in Quebec still believe the effort is bearing fruit. Obviously, it’s not always a piece of cake and never a long, smooth river, as this documentary series proves. But what sets it apart from the hard work of creating love-filled dishes is food prepared in a way you’re proud of. Full investment is necessary, but oh so rewarding! And it’s the customers who come out on top.

Pay rise amid layoffs: Google CEO versus villain in Shrek

Mocked by his employees for getting a substantial raise when his company laid off 12,000 employees, the Google chairman and CEO has been compared to the villain of the animated film Shrek.

“Sunday [Pichai] Accept $226 million while laying off 12,000 Googlers, cutting welfare and destroying morale and culture […]. Some of you may die, but I’m willing to sacrifice that,” Google employees reportedly shared, along with a picture of Lord Farquaad to reference the Shrek villain’s famous quote.

At least that’s what CNBC reported on Wednesday, after Google’s internal platforms were inundated with comments and “memes,” humorous images, in response to CEO Sundar Pichai’s substantial pay rise.

The latter reportedly received a salary of $226 million (CA$302 million) last year, made up largely of a $218 million stock bonus.

Aside from that, Google’s parent company Alphabet reportedly laid off 12,000 employees during the same period and cut many employee services, including access to laptops, fitness and cafe items, over several years, CNBC reported.

Chief Financial Officer Ruth Porat made the announcement in one of the few emails sent to all employees.

“Ruth’s cost savings applied to everyone… except […] to our hard-working CEO,” another employee reportedly quipped over a post that reportedly garnered more than 1,200 “likes,” according to CNBC.

A black man has been accused of shooting two white men in the back of the head in a hate crime.

Carlton Gilford, who is homeless, allegedly shot dead Lundin Hathcock, 35, and James McDaniel, 55, on April 18 in two separate shootings, according to the Tulsa Police Department.

He is believed to have killed Hathcock at the Rudisill Library around 9.40am. He reportedly went after Hathcock, who was seated at a desk, and shot him.

Shortly after, he allegedly went to a nearby QuikTrip supermarket and shot McDaniel. After he fell to the ground, Gilford shot him again. He died on the spot.

According to Fox News, the surveillance footage also shows Gilford shooting another person and a security guard at QuikTrip.

When police arrived, the homeless man admitted shooting at Hathcock and McDaniel.

He was arrested on two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of shooting with intent to kill, and one count of malicious intimidation or harassment.

His charge of malicious intimidation is considered a hate crime in Oklahoma and means the victims were targeted because of their race, according to Fox News.

Tulsa District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler said the evidence supported the two men were targeted because of their race, but didn’t explain to Fox News why she thought so.
