2023-05-06T15:12:15.994Z
Stefano Oldani hits the line and that’s it. Stage done.
2023-05-06T15:09:37.575Z
The last riders are just finishing, but no one bothers the top of the leaderboard.
2023-05-06T15:09:23.240Z
That was a little earlier Evenepoel
We still have seven riders to come in but that was it effectively and dusted.
Evenepoel will be the stage winner and the pink jersey, taking a big chunk out of his rivals.
2023-05-06T15:01:59.558Z
Now to Vlasov, who had a good run. He stops the clock at 10:13 p.m., 55 seconds behind Evenepoel.
2023-05-06T15:00:47.478Z
Evenepoel’s time flies by and it becomes second place for Ganna, 22 seconds back.
2023-05-06T15:00:12.244Z
Ganna is next, the only rider close to Evenepoel after the flat section, but uphill is his relative weakness.
2023-05-06T14:59:43.324Z
Kung goes to the line and we already wrote him out of the stage win but it’s still going to be a solid enough ride. Same time as Roglic – 22:01.
2023-05-06T14:58:51.234Z
22:01 for Roglic.
This is the fourth fastest so far and 43 seconds slower than Evenepoel.
2023-05-06T14:57:53.843Z
Here comes Roglic, suffering an early blow this Giro. He drags himself through the last kilometer. Let’s look at the damage.
2023-05-06T14:57:28.154Z
Evenepoel lost four seconds on Almeida himself on the climb, but it was still a hell of a ride.
2023-05-06T14:57:06.149Z
Evenepoel takes the lead
21:18 for Evenepoel! That’s 29 seconds ahead of Almeida.
2023-05-06T14:56:34.474Z
Evenepoel finishes. Head down, in the saddle.
2023-05-06T14:56:20.446Z
Ganna now begins the climb. At the second check he’s 15 seconds behind, so he’s lost another three seconds and now has to go uphill.
2023-05-06T14:55:56.075Z
Evenepoel does not slow down when ascending. This is a special ride.
2023-05-06T14:54:40.410Z
Roglic hits the control point and what is the damage?
It’s been 42 seconds. Wow.
2023-05-06T14:53:31.607Z
Evenepoel reaches the second checkpoint and is 33 seconds ahead of Almeida’s benchmark.
Flying.
2023-05-06T14:50:36.429Z
Finally we have Vlasov and he is doing really well!
21 seconds behind Evenepoel, equal with Almeida.
2023-05-06T14:50:03.695Z
Kung was 32 seconds back and pretty much out of the equation.
2023-05-06T14:49:39.960Z
The flat is Ganna’s terrain, but Evenepoel missed him 12 seconds in just 9km, with a climb still to come. Incredible stuff.
2023-05-06T14:49:02.270Z
Ganna is 12 seconds behind at this checkpoint!
2023-05-06T14:47:22.702Z
Roglic reaches the checkpoint and is 26 seconds behind Evenepoel after 9 km!
2023-05-06T14:46:20.392Z
Evenepoel flies
At halfway he is 21 seconds faster than everyone else
2023-05-06T14:40:29.789Z
Vlasov’s teammate Lennard Kamna comes to the line. He was considered something of a GC Dark Horse, but he’s only 15th fastest so far.
2023-05-06T14:39:46.530Z
And now Vlasov is on his way to Bora. This is the last of our GC contenders.
2023-05-06T14:39:15.344Z
Thomas comes to the line and has lost some time on this climb. He stops the clock at 10:13 p.m., which is the fifth best time so far.
2023-05-06T14:38:41.981Z
And now Ganna comes onto the ramp in the Italian master’s tricolore and his white Pinarello.
2023-05-06T14:38:18.896Z
Now time for Stefan Kung (FDJ), so often an almost man in big TTs but he can beat anyone in his day.
2023-05-06T14:36:56.696Z
And here’s Roglic with a slightly more subtle and streamlined gold helmet to mark his Olympic champion status. He’s gone and the fight for pink really gets going.
2023-05-06T14:36:10.144Z
The pre-race favorite has bolted and isn’t wasting time sprinting out of the saddle to get going.
2023-05-06T14:35:43.919Z
Here’s Evenepoel on the ramp, in the Belgian Champion’s skin suit and wearing a hell of a Star Wars helmet.
2023-05-06T14:34:33.331Z
Geraint Thomas is fastest at the second checkpoint! climbing time now.
2023-05-06T14:32:31.479Z
That was also 16 seconds faster than Vine and 18 seconds faster than McNulty so he’s the best dog in a very strong UAE team by the looks of it.
2023-05-06T14:32:06.755Z
Almeida leads
The Portuguese runs 21:48 to get a full 10 seconds out of Geoghegan Hart.
2023-05-06T14:31:28.313Z
Almeida has two riders in his sights as he rushes to the line. He takes the lead!
2023-05-06T14:29:29.586Z
Meanwhile, Evenepoel, Roglic, Kung and Ganna have completed their warm-up exercises and are about to start.
2023-05-06T14:29:02.109Z
Almeida is on the climb and will have the fastest time here.
2023-05-06T14:28:37.341Z
Geraint Thomas is level with Vine and Almeida at the first checkpoint – and faster than Geoghegan Hart.
2023-05-06T14:27:14.055Z
Michael Matthews so far with a strong sixth place.
2023-05-06T14:20:19.577Z
Almeida runs well and matches Vine at the first checkpoint.
2023-05-06T14:18:22.205Z
Geoghegan Hart’s co-leader at Ineos, Geraint Thomas, is now making his way. He’s had a troubled start to the year but can always produce when it counts.
2023-05-06T14:17:16.683Z
Geoghegan Hart in the lead!
Wow. The first rider under 22 minutes with 21:58. He beats Vine by six seconds.
2023-05-06T14:16:23.567Z
And now to Geoghegan Hart. He won’t be far here…
2023-05-06T14:15:55.460Z
Bruno Armirail (FDJ) is also on a hell of a ride and crosses the finish line with the third fastest time so far.
2023-05-06T14:14:25.007Z
Geoghegan Hart is on the rise after a strong stretch on the flats.
2023-05-06T14:11:45.791Z
And in a brilliant moment of timing, Joao Almeida – the alleged leader of the UAE – is on his way. With teammates holding twice the best, no pressure at all…
2023-05-06T14:10:58.717Z
That’s a statement from Vine, whose preparation was apparently derailed by a knee injury. We didn’t know if he could be a contender for Grand Tour GC and we didn’t know if he would have the form here, but this is about as good a start as he could have hoped for.
2023-05-06T14:10:05.198Z
vine leads
22:04 for the Australian champion, two seconds faster than his UAE teammate Brandon McNulty.
2023-05-06T14:09:06.962Z
Vine takes the lead.
2023-05-06T14:08:49.139Z
Damiano Caruso – runner-up two years ago – is making his way, but now all eyes are on Vine.
2023-05-06T14:08:21.954Z
Vine appears to be climbing that climb.
2023-05-06T14:08:06.926Z
Another US forward like Will Barta (Movistar) is fourth fastest.
2023-05-06T14:05:49.168Z
Vine is the quickest at the second checkpoint and now he’s reaching his terrain – the ascent. This could be a big ride and a big statement.
2023-05-06T14:01:08.031Z
It is 4pm local time and we are 34 minutes from Evenepoel. A minute later it’s Roglic, a minute later it’s Kung, a minute later it’s Ganna and a minute later it’s Vlasov.
2023-05-06T13:58:20.013Z
Jay Vine fastest at the first checkpoint!
2023-05-06T13:55:39.198Z
And this is where Arensman comes in. It’s not his best performance – 11th fastest so far and 43 seconds behind McNulty.
2023-05-06T13:54:39.121Z
Jack Haig (Bahrain Victorious) is on the way and now Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos) is on the ramp!
2023-05-06T13:53:14.998Z
Ilan Van Wilder is third fastest. Remco Evenepoel’s right hand is clearly on form.
2023-05-06T13:49:07.143Z
McNulty in the lead!
UAE Team Emirates has three leaders! The US rider stormed into the lead with a time of 22:06 and a 14-second lead.
Joao Almeida is UAE’s number one on paper, Jay Vine is the exciting back-up plan, but McNulty – returning to the Giro after two tours with Tadej Pogačar – could be another contender in a race that packs 70km against the clock .
2023-05-06T13:47:08.723Z
Brandon McNulty flies up the final climb.
2023-05-06T13:43:13.893Z
This is your clubhouse manager, Mads Pedersen.
As his EF teammate Rigoberto Urán – two-time Giro runner-up – sets off, Hugh Carthy finishes with the 17th best time so far, 54 seconds off Mads Pedersen.
The British climber could well lose a minute or more on Evenepoel and Roglic.
2023-05-06T13:35:44.916Z
Net up Ineos has Tao Geoghegan Hard in 20 minutes, then Geraint Thomas is at 16:15 and finally Filippo Ganna at 16:37.
2023-05-06T13:34:23.911Z
And when Sivakov is done, Thymen Arensman – likely third in the Ineos hierarchy – is on his way. He has a really good TT on it.
2023-05-06T13:33:41.005Z
Pavel Sivakov is third fastest. He’s one of four potential GC cards for Ineos Grenadiers and while he’ll most likely have to work, he’s got himself into the mix with a solid time there.
2023-05-06T13:29:17.201Z
22:20 for Pedersen!
12 seconds faster than De Bod and we have a new provisional leader.
2023-05-06T13:28:28.531Z
Pedersen goes to the hot seat!
2023-05-06T13:25:06.559Z
Mads Pedersen has the fastest times at the first two controls and now starts the climb in the last 3km.
2023-05-06T13:20:40.662Z
Half of the Giro field has now started this opening time trial. A reminder that you can find the full list of tee times here.
2023-05-06T13:15:08.716Z
This is Hugh Carthy. This is the first of our realistic GC contenders and the EF rider has a decent TT in his closet on his day.
2023-05-06T13:12:17.340Z
The Ineos Grenadiers rider is fourth fastest so far and is looking good on the way back to his best time. He was a big talent at Jumbo-Visma but had a difficult few years at Ineos Grenadiers but caught the eye in the Tour of the Alps and is looking very up.
2023-05-06T13:10:44.592Z
Here comes Laurens De Plus’ turn and it’s a blast…
2023-05-06T13:09:10.827Z
Dutch champion Bauke Mollema finishes fourth fastest. The veteran has transformed into something of a TT specialist in the twilight of his career – such a strong all-around rider. We have an interview with Mollema on the website today, who is riding his 22nd Grand Tour, which you can read here.
2023-05-06T13:06:55.149Z
In that sense, it’s a tactic Rick Zabel used to great effect last year.
Zabel surpasses Yates as a ‘crazy plan’ earns him the blue jersey at the Giro d’Italia
2023-05-06T13:05:08.503Z
Filippo Zanna storms the last kilometer out of the saddle.
The first blue jersey for the mountains classification goes to the fastest time on the final climb, from the second checkpoint to the finish line, so we’ll encourage riders to take it easy on the bike path to save everything for the final climb.
2023-05-06T12:58:01.352Z
Rohan Dennis speaks at the finish
“[That was] rough. I had a week off during Romandie, so today I wasn’t expecting to be the absolute best of me, but it was always going to be a challenge. A good way to open your legs and lungs and hopefully the start of a good Giro.
“Who has the most power [will come out on top]. The last climb hurts but if you have the legs you can smack over it. Not me, but hopefully Primoz [Roglic] does.”
2023-05-06T12:53:23.625Z
23:03 and 7th fastest for the revelation of the Ardennes, Ben Healy (EF).
2023-05-06T12:49:39.314Z
Bob Jungels (Bora) third fastest so far.
2023-05-06T12:47:14.004Z
Rohan Dennis comes to the line and the two-time world champion is even further off the pace, ninth fastest as he stands.
2023-05-06T12:45:58.196Z
Cerny comes to the line but he’s outside of the fastest times. 22:56 and that’s only the fifth fastest with the big names to come.
2023-05-06T12:42:40.094Z
Cerny hits the climb looking pretty strained. The QuickStep driver won the most recent Romandie prologue and is now one of the underdogs.
2023-05-06T12:32:17.885Z
The first shots come from our photographers.
Nico Denz (Bora) set the fastest time, but not for long, while Stefan De Bod (EF) set the fastest time at 22:32.
2023-05-06T12:28:44.669Z
The Jumbo-Visma line-up was battered from pillar to pillar and had to replace no fewer than FIVE riders due to a combination of injuries and COVID-19. Only two riders from the original line-up remain to support Roglic’s bid for Pink. Latest below.
Gloag for Jumbo-Visma after Tratnik suffered a training crash on the eve of the Giro d’Italia
2023-05-06T12:26:48.830Z
Rohan Dennis is a two-time TT World Champion but he wasn’t destined for this race and recently retired from the Tour de Romandie due to illness.
2023-05-06T12:23:56.706Z
We mentioned Cerny and Dennis. They both just started.
2023-05-06T12:20:37.682Z
We get some movement in the leaderboard as first Jasha Sutterlin and now Ryan Gibbons (UAE) lower the benchmark which now stands at 22:56.
2023-05-06T12:17:51.223Z
But Stewart is through just 10 seconds later to set the fastest time by 50 seconds at 23:28.
2023-05-06T12:15:26.364Z
Huys jumps up the last ramps into the narrow streets of Ortona’s old town. He ticks off the last train to the line to stop the clock at 24:28 – our first time.
2023-05-06T12:13:38.952Z
But the change of terrain shifts the balance the other way again and Huys dances away as the road climbs.
2023-05-06T12:13:08.799Z
While Laurens Huys is our first starter, he might not be our first finisher as Campbell passes Stewart early in the climb.
2023-05-06T12:11:54.139Z
You should be able to see the live timings right above.
2023-05-06T12:11:37.938Z
We have two split checks today, the first halfway at 9.8km, the second at the bottom of the climb at 16.8km.
2023-05-06T12:08:51.766Z
This bike path with a smooth green surface runs along the coast, just a stone’s throw from the Adriatic Sea. There are a series of dark tunnels as the bike path bores through various headlands.
The wind is light today so although exposed it shouldn’t have much of an impact. Likewise, the late climb isn’t steep enough to really upset the rhythm of the stronger rouleurs.
2023-05-06T11:53:52.488Z
As mentioned, the big names are mostly loading back into the later part of the day. The first real GC rider is Hugh Carthy at 15:13, while the early stage win time benchmarks should come from Josef Cerny and Rohan Dennis, starting at 14:22 and 14:23
2023-05-06T11:51:40.173Z
We are away!
Laurens Huys (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) rolls down the starting ramp and the 2023 Giro d’Italia is underway.
2023-05-06T11:50:48.536Z
As for this fight, we have a delicious prospect of Evenepoel and Roglic starting a minute apart. They are followed directly by two TT specialists and stage favorites, Stefan Kung and Filippo Ganna. Full tee times at the link below.
Giro d’Italia 2023 Stage 1 Time Trial Start Times – Evenepoel, Roglic, Ganna running late
2023-05-06T11:49:33.355Z
As Alasdair notes, this is the longest 1st ITT ever at the Giro at 19.6km. This is no mere prologue; It’s a big day in the pink jersey battle. Already.
2023-05-06T11:46:42.530Z
Anyway, Barry is there for us at the Giro, along with Alasdair Fotheringham, who was our reconnaissance man on the time trial course yesterday. If you’ve seen the stage profile but are wondering what the course is really like, look no further…

We need to catch up on some preview content before we get started. Our usual 10 day countdown was packed with great features and it all started with Barry Ryan’s production designer. Barry loathes the term “must-read,” so I’ll call this book a “must-read.”
Evenepoel, Roglic and a race in half – Giro d’Italia 2023 preview
2023-05-06T11:35:32.992Z
The 2023 Giro starts with a time trial and it all starts at 1:50pm local time when the first rider rolls down the ramp. That’s only 15 minutes away.
2023-05-06T11:34:43.728Z
This is the scene at the Fossacesia Marina launch pad on the Adriatic coast of the Abruzzo region of Italy. Former Giro champion Vincenzo Nibali has turned up to the party.
So here we are, the first Grand Tour of the 2023 season is finally upon us. We have three weeks of racing ahead of us across Italy on a varied route with three time trials, some sprints and a brutal final week in the mountains.
We have an outstanding cast, with Remco Evenepoel versus Primoz Roglic, the headline duel, but also some strong collectives to challenge from the likes of Ineos, UAE, Bora and Bahrain.
It should be a blast and it all starts here with the first time trial of stage one!
2023-05-05T17:12:41.054Z
Buongiorno!
Who is ready for the Giro?
