Princes Harry and Andrew stripped of their official roles at the coronation – Le Journal de Montréal

Invited but kept separate: Harry, Charles III’s youngest son, who is at odds with the royal family, and Andrew, the king’s brother, who is already bereft of public engagement, will have no official roles at the coronation, the palace confirmed on Saturday.

The Duke of Sussex (Harry) and the Duke of York (Andrew) are no longer working members of the royal family, the first since leaving the United States voluntarily with his wife Meghan in 2020, while the second following their sex out of grace fell charges of assault.

If they attended the funeral procession behind Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin at Westminster Abbey following her death last September, this time Harry and Andrew will not walk behind the royal couple in the procession, who will accompany them back to Buckingham Palace afterwards will the ceremony.

They are also unlikely to appear on the balcony for the traditional salute of members of the royal family, even though the palace has not revealed who will be surrounding Charles and Camilla for the occasion.

But even without an official role, Harry will no doubt turn heads. His place at Westminster Abbey will say a lot about the state of his relations with his father and perhaps even his older brother William, heir apparent to the throne whom he did not spare in his memoir The Substitute, which was published in January.

In particular, he details an argument in 2019 in which William would have thrown him to the ground in the dog bowl.

While tension has long hung over his presence, which was only confirmed a few weeks before the coronation, it is the first time since the publication of this book that Harry is seeing his loved ones again, particularly the queen-consort Camilla, whom he accuses of many evils in ” The Substitutes”.

The contrast will be stark with the role assigned to William, who as heir to the throne must kneel during the ceremony and swear allegiance to the monarch.

Meghan, Harry’s wife, and their two children, Archie and Lilibet, have stayed in California, where Harry will join them to celebrate Archie’s fourth birthday right after the coronation.

Now used to keeping a low profile, Andrew was barred from any official public appearance and stripped of his military titles in early 2022 after he was accused of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl, a case he settled with a financial deal had.

Her presence shortly thereafter on the arm of the Queen, who accompanied her to Westminster Abbey for a service in honor of her father, Prince Philip, who died last year, had sparked criticism.

Montreal: 8 Arrests and Two Firearms Seized

Patrol officers from the Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) seized two illegal firearms and arrested eight people in separate interventions conducted Thursday evening and overnight in Montreal’s Outremont and Ahuntsic sectors, Cartierville

Around 10 p.m. Thursday night, a citizen called 911 after seeing three people holding a firearm in a black sedan parked outside an Ahuntsic-Cartierville apartment building.

Three men, aged 15, 18 and 26 respectively, were arrested and a loaded handgun was found in the vehicle.

One of the arrested suspects had been arrested with a firearm in the past.

Around 1:30 a.m. Thursday night, another citizen called 911 that a group of people had forced the front door of the building where he lived in Outremont. The suspects fled the scene in a car before entering the apartment.

The vehicle was eventually intercepted and its five occupants arrested, four men and one woman between the ages of 19 and 21.

After the search, officers found a loaded gun on one of the suspects. Another member of the group was in possession of a hammer.

An investigation is underway to clarify the circumstances of this event.

Six active police officers and five civilian guards will be candidates for 28-M

Right Captain José Ramón Llorca, PP candidate for Cartagena City Council, together with Antonio León, mayor of Torre-Pacheco (also in Murcia), the city where he was based.Right Captain José Ramón Llorca, PP candidate for Cartagena City Council, together with Antonio León, mayor of Torre-Pacheco (also in Murcia), the city where he was based.

With more than 155,000 votes for the parties, the state security is not only a catch area, but also a broad group in which candidates are being sought. According to Home Office data, to which EL PAÍS had access, six active-duty national police officers and five Civil Guards accepted offers from various political groups to stand on their lists for the May 28 local and regional elections. A seventh police officer’s request to appear was denied due to an open internal file that had not yet been resolved. These 11 candidates are significantly fewer than four years ago when 19 (15 police officers and 4 Civil Guards) presented themselves.

Among the five members of the armed institute who have now taken the step to stand as candidates, there is one officer, which was not the case in the 2019 elections: Captain José Ramón Llorca, hitherto head of the armed institute in the city of Torre-Pacheco ( Murcia). Llorca appears number two in the PP election for the Cartagena City Council (population 214,000), headed by current Mayor Noelia Arroyo. The other members of the armed institute standing as candidates in the elections are a corporal standing as a candidate in the province of Lugo and three agents drawn from the ranks of corporal and guards standing as candidates in those of Pontevedra, Murcia and Almeria. One of them, José Luis Gómez Fontenla, becomes the PP’s candidate for mayor in the Galician municipality of Moraña, which has 4,200 inhabitants.

Pedro Carmona, spokesman for the Unified Association of the Civil Guard (AUGC), believes the number of agents from the armed institute who would present themselves as candidates would be greater if the procedure for a member of the security forces – which the law requires – “Political neutrality” would be required in the exercise of their functions, which is why they are prohibited from joining parties outside “less complex” ones. According to the details, to do this they must request a transition to an administrative situation called “special services” in which they no longer receive their remuneration as agents, although they retain some rights such as the collection of triennials. However, for Agustín Leal, Judiciary spokesman for the Civil Guard (Jucil, the majority association among the agents), the reasons why there are few candidates in uniform are different: “The Civil Guard is generally not very interested in politics “. The best known so far Case of an active Civil Guard who took part in elections is that of Juan Antonio Delgado Ramos, who held a seat for United We Can in Congress from 2016 until last year, when he was elected Member of Parliament of Andalusia on behalf of the coalition Por Andalucia.

More common is the presence of active national police officers in candidacies, who also have to go to special services to do so. In fact, there are currently three members of Congress who come from this body. One is Felipe Sicilia, a socialist MP for Jaén who held the position of spokesman for the PSOE federal executive. Also in the chamber is Pablo Cambronero, a rank-and-file policeman who was elected by Ciudadanos after passing through the Andalusian Parliament in 2019, although he later left the party and is now part of the Mixed Group. Finally, the PP Ana Belén Vázquez, its spokeswoman for the Interior Commission, who has been student inspector since June 2002 after approving opposition to being admitted to the management level of the National Police, but has not yet completed the course for his political career, he has not completed the full Gained agent status, as she confirms.

In these elections, the number of active national police officers running as candidates was significantly reduced compared to the two previous local and regional elections. 16 did so in 2015 and 15 in 2019. This time only six will attend after the General Directorate of Police refused a seventh agent the leave he had requested due to an open disciplinary file. This is Samuel Vázquez, President of the Siglo XXI Police Association, who has starred in controversial public interventions linking irregular immigration and an alleged rise in crime in Spain.

Vázquez, who has denounced the Interior Ministry’s decision that prevented him from taking part in the elections, was set to become Vox number two on the city council of Fuenlabrada, a municipality south-west of Madrid of 190,000 people. According to last April’s CIS poll, Santiago Abascal’s party is exactly the one favored by the police and military group: 38.4% of this group would vote for him, compared to 21.1% who would vote for the PP would vote, and 8.7% who would vote for the PSOE.

A home run contest at the Jays

A home run contest at the Jays’ expense

Although Fenway Park is usually a difficult spot for home runs, the Boston Red Sox showed they were comfortable at home by scoring four in a 7-6 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night.

Connor Wong was toxic to visiting pitchers. The catcher already had two hits on his record when he relegated Zach Pop’s bid just past the red line to the “green monster.” After consultation, officers decided the shot was valid, but Wong didn’t want to take any chances.

On his next shot, in the eighth inning, the 26-year-old stretched his arms again to score the deciding run, this time past Erik Swanson (1-1). Christian Arroyo and Masataka Yoshida also got shots wide against starter Yusei Kikuchi.

Trailing 3-0, the Jays put all their eggs in one basket by hitting six runs in the fifth inning. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. set the example with a single payout, then a mistake from Wong at the plate equalized. Daulton Varsho put an end to that productive turn of the stick by clearing the trails with a homer.

In the standings, Boston (17-14) is closing in on third place in the American League East, held by Toronto (18-12), after two consecutive wins. The two teams meet on Wednesday and Thursday.

A duel at the top

In St. Petersburg, the Tampa Bay Rays won the first game of a series at the top of the table against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The hosts were strong both offensively and defensively and secured a 4-1 win.

Everything seems to be working out for the Rays (24-6), who have the best record in Major League Baseball. Even against strong opponents like the Pirates (20-10), the crowd favorites allowed themselves a little imagination.

In the fifth inning, Wander Franco hit first base with a single and Jose Siri finished third. After a pitch from Roansy Contreras (3-2), first stole second base while second stormed the plate. This match, no doubt meticulously planned by the two accomplices, made the difference in this clash.

Harold Ramirez did the rest with a long solo ball and a single to Randy Arozarena’s goal.

The Rays used a committee of assists for this duel and it was Colin Poche (3-0) who was credited with the win after playing an inning in the fifth.

AMANDA PLATELL Why I wish King Charles wouldnt make Camilla

AMANDA PLATELL: Why I wish King Charles wouldn’t make Camilla his queen today

This morning my friends and I will be excitedly gathered around my widescreen HDTV to witness every detail of the coronation in all its glory.

Union Jacks will be flapping at my windows, Dubonnet and gin ready, quiches in the oven, a table full of cocktail sausages, pork pies and, yes, even cucumber sandwiches.

It’s not every day to celebrate the coronation of your King, especially one who has served our late Queen so dutifully all his life and now, at the age of 74, assumes the mantle of Sovereignty.

But I have a concern in the back of my mind – and it is a significant one. I fear Camilla will be crowned queen alongside him.

After all, the Queen never made her beloved husband Prince Philip our king. And while she was clear that Camilla should be formally made Queen Consort – a generous gesture given Her Majesty once referred to her as “that wicked woman” – Charles has gone a step further and proclaimed her Queen.

Wondering how to get a front row seat at King Charles III's coronation? can get from across the pond in America? FEMAIL created a complete guide to his big day

Wondering how to get a front row seat at King Charles III’s coronation? can get from across the pond in America? FEMAIL created a complete guide to his big day

To be fair, Camilla never asked for that honor. But more importantly, neither did the British public.

Like millions of loyal monarchists, I wish King Charles and Queen Camilla well. But why did he have to overwhelm Camilla when so many of us still have reservations about her? A poll in the Mail this week echoed my own concerns – naming the late Queen as our favorite king, with Prince William in second place followed by his mother Princess Diana, who died nearly three decades ago.

Most revealingly, Queen Camilla was at the bottom along with Meghan, Harry and Andrew.

As much as Charles loves Camilla, his subjects do not share his devotion. And I’m afraid a lot of this has to do with Diana, who even in death casts a shadow over today’s events. It is made even more poignant by the fact that she feared the woman who got her husband would wear the crown. That happens today.

Women of my generation witnessed Charles’ betrayal and we cannot shake the memories of Camilla’s role in this desperately sad saga.

That’s why I’m going to feel uncomfortable watching Camilla be crowned queen today – and hope it doesn’t turn out to be a terrible mistake.

Kate and William hand Harry a pint

While Harry prepared to fly to London for his one-day coronation trip, William and Kate drank pints at the Soho pub The Dog And Duck and took the tube home. Let’s hope the spare gave a thought to his reputation as an eco-warrior as he clocked up the airline miles with dad for a disgruntled few hours.

How touching that William will pay a moving tribute to both his father and stepmother after tomorrow’s concert. And it’s eye-catching for Harry, whose poison to Camilla was revealed in his book, and who will surely be back in California trying not to choke on his kale smoothie when he sees how popular his estranged brother is.

What a bright jerk our Archbishop of Canterbury is, inviting us all to swear allegiance to the King – at home in front of the television! That’s unlikely as after a few drinks after watching the coronation from 10am some of us will have trouble even getting up.

The Old Vic Theater warns its play Pygmalion contains scenes of ‘enforced control’ as Eliza Doolittle gets refined with her terrible accent. Damn, I wish someone would have force controlled me. Maybe I would have lost my own terrible accent.

Westminster Wars

Now we learn that “impeccably impartial” officer Sue Gray had “several talks” with Keir Starmer to become his chief of staff for at least four months while she was investigating Boris Johnson over Partygate. The outcome of the Privileges Committee inquiry into Partygate – which could decide Boris’ future – is expected in May. It should be canceled immediately as this Labor sewing stinks. The only inquiry we need now concerns Gray’s links with Labour.

Labor should hold back their celebrations of winning local elections. William Hague won a huge number of local seats ahead of the 2001 general election – when the Tories were hit by a second Blair landslide.

No wonder Gen Z refuses to understand phrases used by older people. “Whipping a dead horse” is animal cruelty. “Back to the Salt Mines” is reminiscent of slavery. “Burn the midnight oil” means working more than four hours a day. “Bite the Bullet” is certainly warmongering. And how offensive is “What’s the beef?” — to vegans, let alone fruitarians?

Russia-Ukraine War at a Glance: What We Know on Day 437 of the Invasion – The Guardian

  • The leader of the Russian Wagner mercenaries has announced that his troops will leave Bakhmut, which they have been trying to capture since last summer. Yevgeny Prigozhin said they would withdraw and end their involvement in the longest battle of the war on Wednesday, May 10, due to heavy casualties and insufficient ammunition supplies, and urged defense chiefs to put regular army troops in their place. But Ukraine said Wagner fighters would reinforce positions to try to capture the eastern city before that date.

  • Prigozhin previously released a video showing him standing in a field of Russian corpses and blaming defense chiefs for the casualties suffered by his fighters in Ukraine and looks set to reignite his simmering feud with Russian powerhouses.

  • Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu has conducted an inspection of troop readiness for forces involved in the war, in an apparently cryptic response to Prigozhin’s criticism.

  • Ukraine said two people were killed and nine injured in the eastern Donetsk region and power distribution networks were damaged by shelling in the Donetsk and Kherson regions.

  • Some residents left the city of Kherson in cars and buses on Friday, and others stocked up on groceries before a 56-hour curfew begins Friday night. The curfew announcement has sparked speculation in Kherson that the city will serve as a base for the long-awaited Ukrainian counterattack.

  • Authorities in the Russian-held areas of Zaporizhia have started evacuating villages near the front lines. Russian-installed governor Yevgeny Balitsky announced the move in anticipation of a Ukrainian offensive aimed at retaking the area, claiming Kiev’s forces had “intensified shelling of settlements near the frontline” in recent days.

  • Engineers have reduced the risk of a dam bursting and damaging the Russian-held Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, a senior Russian official was quoted as saying by state news agency Tass on Friday. Renat Karchaa, an adviser to the general director of power engineering company Rosenergoatom, said specialists had started draining water from the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station on the Dnieper River in southern Ukraine.

  • A Moscow court has ordered the arrest of a theater director and a playwright on charges of “justifying terrorism”. about an award-winning play about Russian women recruited online to marry radical Islamists in Syria. Director Yevgeniya Berkovich and writer Svetlana Petriychuk were held in pre-trial detention until July 4, Russian news agencies reported.

  • Ukraine’s Air Force said it shot down one of its own drones after losing control of Kiev. Andriy Yermak, Ukraine’s presidential chief of staff, initially said an enemy drone had been shot down, but the air force later clarified that it was a Ukrainian drone, which was destroyed on Thursday.

  • The White House has dismissed as “ridiculous” claims by Russia that Washington orchestrated drone strikes on Moscow. He said the US was not involved in Wednesday’s incident and accused Russia of lying.

  • Finnish energy company Fortum has told the Kremlin that it strongly objects to Russia’s alleged “unlawful” seizure of its subsidiary in the country. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the seizure was in line with Russian legislation.

  • Bill Clinton said he knew in 2011 that it was only “a matter of time” before the Russian president attacked Ukraine. “Vladimir Putin told me in 2011 – three years before he conquered Crimea – that he did not agree with the agreement I reached with Boris Yeltsin,” the former US president recalled. “He said… ‘I don’t agree with that. And I don’t support it. And I’m not bound by it.’ And I knew from that day that it was only a matter of time.”

Christmas Tree Shops files for bankruptcy plans to close some

Christmas Tree Shops files for bankruptcy, plans to close some stores, says report – The Sun Chronicle

As expected, Christmas Tree Shops, the long-time Massachusetts-based retail chain with stores in North Attleboro and Foxboro, has filed for bankruptcy.

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday on the Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing and said the retail chain plans to emerge from bankruptcy by August, with most of its stores remaining open.

However, the company intends to close 10 underperforming stores, the report said. It was not specified which.

The Middleboro-based company has no plans to look for a buyer, it added.

On Thursday, the WSJ reported that the bankruptcy filing was imminent and said the company had hired a Boston law firm to prepare.

Christmas Tree Shops is a discount home goods chain known for its slogan, “Don’t you just love a bargain?”

It has stores at Route 1 in North Attleboro and at Patriot Place at Route 1 in Foxboro.

There are 80 Christmas tree stores, 15 in Massachusetts and two in Rhode Island.

The company’s roots stretch back to the 1950’s when there was a summertime store on Cape Cod, The Christmas Tree Gift Shop. There are three Christmas tree shops in the Cape including Hyannis.

The company’s troubles stem from multiple retail chain bankruptcies, including recently Bed, Bath & Beyond.

It had stores in the area including North Attleboro, Foxboro, and Seekonk.

Bed, Bath & Beyond, which owned the Christmas Tree Shops until 2020, is closing.
