Paul Murdaugh’s girlfriend claims he hit her and held her by the throat

Paul Murdaugh’s longtime girlfriend has broken her silence to accuse the murdered 22-year-old of physical abuse – and claims his family once helped cover up a serious car accident when he was drunk driving.

Morgan Doughty, 23, opened up about her tumultuous relationship with Alex Murdaugh’s younger son Paul for the first time in a new Netflix documentary, Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal. She described him as an abusive partner who often drank and claimed that one night he started kicking her and when she told him to stop, grabbed her by the throat and punched her.

Doughty described the events after a 2017 Christmas party where she claimed a drunk Paul crashed his truck and his family rushed to the scene to hide guns and beer cans in the vehicle before police arrived.

She also recalled how family housekeeper Gloria Satterfield found bags of pills belonging to Alex Murdaugh, who was addicted to opioids, and told Paul about it, the same year she died of a fall at her estate.

The new allegations come amid the fifth week of Alex’s double murder trial, in which he is accused of shooting dead his son Paul and wife Maggie on June 7, 2021 at the family’s sprawling hunting lodge in Moselle, South Carolina.

The three-part Netflix documentary delves into the scandals and suspicious deaths linked to once-celebrity legal South Carolina scion Alex Murdaugh and his family between 2015 and 2021.

In the documentary, Doughty, who moved to South Carolina with her parents early in high school, said she had a strong bond with Paul and the two began dating in their junior year.

During their romance, Doughty said she and her friends would hang out at Paul’s house, where his parents reportedly regularly offered booze to the minors.

“Whenever I came to the Murdaughs’ house, it was normal that they drank and they always kept a lot of liquor in the house,” Doughty said.

Claims of Murdaugh’s prevailing drinking culture align with what Doughty told police after the death of her friend Mallory Beach, 19, in 2019 – who was killed in a boating accident said to have been driven by Paul while intoxicated.

In her affidavit, Doughty presented 25 videos of minors drinking alcohol while Alex and his family were present.

But while the fatal boating accident was under deep investigation, Doughty claimed Paul was responsible for another drunk driving incident two years earlier.

On December 25, 2017, Doughty claimed she drove a drunk Paul home when he “aggressively” demanded that he drive his truck.

She said he then lost control and crashed into a ditch, adding that beer cans and guns rolled everywhere in the truck.

When she tried to call 911 for help, Doughty said Paul grabbed her phone and hung up, opting to call his grandfather, Randolph Murdaugh, and Alex instead.

Doughty claimed Randolph, Alex and Maggie Murdaugh rushed to the scene and before checking on the teenagers, they cleared the truck of guns and beer cans.

She added that they fined her for calling 911 because it would have caused trouble for her youngest son, Paul.

Doughty said their relationship began to deteriorate in part due to Paul’s alleged constant drinking, and her friends warned her to stay away from him.

In the documentary, her friend Miley Altman said she and Beach would tell Doughty they were going to end things with Paul, saying the couple would break up and get back together over the weekends.

Speaking of her relationship with Paul, Doughty said, “I think our relationship is just something that I’ve really held onto just because when it’s been good, it’s been really good. But when it was bad, it was really bad.’

She said their arguments started to get physical, and it all came to a head one night when they were celebrating Buster Murdaugh’s graduation and Paul started kicking her at a hotel where they were staying.

Doughty noticed that Paul was drunk, and when he told her to stop, he grabbed her by the throat.

“He got on top of me and I just remember him yelling, ‘I told you to shut up,'” she recalled.

“Just hold my throat. I just remember then he hit me in the knee really hard,” she added as she started to cry.

On the day of the boat wreck, Doughty claimed that Paul hit and spat on her.

Doughty’s parents, Bill and Diane, said they had no idea what their daughter was going through but said she was done with him the day of the accident.

“She was done,” her mother said. ‘That was it.’

“She always said Mallory saved her, and that’s really a way she saved her.”

Along with her own inner turmoil, Doughty also offered insight into Paul, saying that he often felt he was a disappointment to his family and that he only got approval from the family’s housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield.

Doughty said Satterfield was “Paul’s second mother” and that the housekeeper told him about “pill bags” that Alex heard.

Alex had abused opioids for years and was often confronted about it by his family, including Paul, just a month before he and Maggie were murdered on June 7, 2021.

Doughty noted that Satterfield’s discovery happened in 2018, the same year she fell to her death at Alex’s hunting lodge.

Most of the first episode of the Netflix series was dedicated to Beach’s death and Paul’s alleged role in it.

Beach, 19, was thrown from the boat when it crashed into Archers Creek Bridge in Beaufort, South Carolina in February 2019. Her body was found five days later.

It is believed that 19-year-old Paul was intoxicated at the time, and brother Buster was accused of lending his younger brother his ID so he could buy alcohol before the crash.

Anthony Cook, Beach’s boyfriend, and his cousin Connor Cook, Miley’s boyfriend, also spoke in the Netflix series.

Connor opened up about his outrage when the Murdaugh family tried to frame him for crashing the crash boat.

“I wanted to beat him to death for not driving,” Connor said, adding that he was relieved when Paul was finally charged with Mallory’s death

At the time of his death, Paul was awaiting trial for three felonies — two for driving under the influence of alcohol and one for causing death and physical harm.

He was charged and released on $50,000 bail.

According to legal documents viewed by , Murdaugh was “highly intoxicated”, “intoxicated” and “aggressive” on February night two years ago when he crashed his boat into a mound on Archer’s Creek.

All six youths on board that night were under the age of 21 and were ejected from the ship. But Beach didn’t make it to shore.

Beach’s mother filed a $50 million creditor’s lawsuit against the estate of Paul and his late mother Maggie, while other survivors of the boating — Doughty and Altman — also filed claims against the $10 million and $5 million Murdaugh estates .

Creditor claims filed against an estate are legal means for claimants to receive money they believe is owed to someone after they die.

Last month, the Mallory Beach family reached a preliminary settlement with Buster Murdaugh in the $50 million lawsuit.

The cost of the settlement was not released, but ABC News 4 reported that it was a “substantial” amount.

The settlement will reportedly mean Buster and his late mother Maggie Murdaugh – who was accused of knowing her son Paul was drunk when he went boating that night – will no longer be named in the lawsuit.

That would leave only Paul and Buster’s father, Alex, and Parker’s Kitchen convenience store (where Paul bought underage alcohol) as names.

June 7, 2021: Paul and Maggie are murdered

The mother and son were found shot to death at the family home in Islandton, South Carolina.

Alex Murdaugh says he found her in the house.

The coroner said the couple had been dead an hour at most when he discovered them.

It was later revealed that Alex waited an hour to call 911 about her death.

Curtis Edward Smith, 61, was arrested on charges of assisting suicide, assault and assault, pointing and presenting a firearm, insurance fraud and conspiracy to commit insurance fraud.

Smith, of Walterboro, South Carolina, is a former client of Murdaugh, who represented him on minor transportation matters and in a 2015 lawsuit Smith filed against a forest management company.

According to police, Murdaugh paid him to shoot him in the head and kill him, making it look like a random drive-by attack.

September 15, 2021: Police launch a criminal investigation into the 2018 death of Satterfield

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) announced that it is investigating the 2018 death of Gloria Satterfield and the subsequent handling of her estate.

Satterfield, 57, was Murdaugh’s housekeeper and nanny for around 25 years when she suffered a fatal brain injury following a mysterious fall at the Murdaugh family home.

She died a few weeks later on February 26, 2018.

SLED said that Hit opened a criminal investigation into Satterfield’s death based on a request from the Hampton County Coroner and “information gathered during the course of our other ongoing investigations into Alex Murdaugh.”

September 16, 2021: Alex reports to the police about insurance fraud

The bank has been included as a defendant in the trial of Murdaugh, who is accused of cheating Gloria Ann Satterfield’s sons out of life insurance money after the housekeeper’s mysterious death.

Statterfield’s sons say the bank looked the other way when it allowed Murdaugh to set up a fake account and wire insurance payments to himself and a cousin.

June 28, 2022: Alex Murdaugh and Curtis Smith are charged with drug trafficking

Murdaugh is accused of writing 437 checks valued at $2.4 million that Curtis Smith – the man he hired to assassinate him – cashed over eight years to September 2021.

Smith kept some of the money for himself and used the rest for wide-ranging illegal activities, according to indictments released June 28.

According to prosecutors, this illegal activity included a “distribution network” for the painkiller oxycodone.

Both men were charged with possession, manufacture or distribution of narcotics.

Madeleine McCann disappearance: Internet casts doubt on Polish woman claiming she is missing British girl

Social media users have questioned claims by a Polish woman who says she is Madeleine McCann, a British girl who disappeared 16 years ago at the age of three while on a family holiday in Portugal.

Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, were on vacation in Praia da Luz, Portugal, along with their three children – Madeleine and twins Sean and Amelie – when Madeline was dragged from her bed on May 3, 2007 in her ground floor apartment.

“I don’t remember most of my childhood but my earliest memory is very strong and it’s about vacations in hot places where there was beach and white or very bright [colored] building with [apartments]’ Poland’s Julia Faustyna, also known as Julia Wendlet, wrote in an Instagram post from her @iammadeleineccann account last week.

The account began posting photos last week. Faustyna says she has a spot in her right eye and a beauty mark on her cheek similar to McCann’s. She also claims details of her childhood do not add up, leading her to believe that she was kidnapped as an infant.

MADELEINE MCCANN KIDNAPP SUSPECTS CLAIMS TO HAVE ALIBI: REPORT

Faustyna’s account quickly went viral. She said in an update last week that Kate and Gerry McCann agreed to a DNA test, which a family lawyer has not confirmed to Fox News Digital.

“Due to an active police investigation, Gerry and Kate are not making statements or giving interviews unless requested by the Metropolitan Police,” Megan Spector, official coordinator of the Find Madeleine campaign, said in a statement.

BRITISH GIRL MADELEINE MCCANN IS STILL MISSING AFTER 15 YEARS

Social media users who were initially curious about Faustyna’s claims are now suspicious of the viral account after Faustyna posted a photo of her mother and then deleted it. Users say she resembles her mother more than the McCanns.

A Polish blog for missing persons also posted an alleged statement by the family of “Julia W.” on Facebook.

“For us as a family, it goes without saying that Julia is our daughter, granddaughter, sister, niece, cousin and step-niece. We have memories, we have pictures,” the statement said. “Julia also has these photos because she took them from the parental home with the birth certificate and numerous hospital discharges.”

MADELEINE MCCANN: PORTUGUESE PROSECUTORS IDENTIFY SUSPECT IN INQUIRY INTO MISSING GIRL

The statement adds that Faustyna has had “numerous therapies, medications, psychologists and psychiatrists” but she has “moved out of the house” and “is refusing treatment.”

“[Julia] Wanted to be a singer, model. She always wanted to be popular. What happens now, she has 1 million followers. We fear Julia will bear the inevitable. The internet won’t forget it and it’s obvious that Julia isn’t Maddie. We are shocked by this current situation. At the same time, we would like to announce that we will not conduct interviews, publish photos, or comment on articles. Please direct any questions or concerns to the spokesman for the Provincial Police Command in Worcław,” the statement continued.

Faustyna has help from medium Dr. Fia Johansson, also known as @persianmedium on social media, to share her story.

The Metropolitan Police of London told Fox News Digital that they had no new comment on the investigation.

“We continue to support our colleagues in Germany in their investigations,” said the Met Police.

In 2020, German police named convicted child molester and drug dealer Christian Brückner, 45, as a suspect in the 3-year-old’s disappearance, although Brückner, a German national, continues to deny any involvement in the case.

Brueckner is currently serving time in a German prison for drug-related offences. He also has a seven-year sentence pending in connection with the 2005 rape of a 72-year-old American woman in Praia da Luz.

Harry Potter author JK Rowling said she’s not concerned about how the backlash to her position on transgender issues will affect her legacy.

She said anyone who thinks she is has “deeply” misunderstood her.

She has been labeled as transphobic for her views on gender identity and allowing trans women into women-only spaces.

Rowling told a new podcast that she “never meant to upset anyone,” but added, “I didn’t feel uncomfortable stepping off my pedestal, though.”

Referring to fans claiming she “ruined” her legacy, the author said they “couldn’t have misunderstood me any deeper.”

“I don’t go around my house thinking about my legacy,” she continued.

“What a pompous way to live your life, walking around thinking what will my legacy be? Whatever, I’ll be dead. I take care of now. I care for the living.”

threat of violence

In a 2020 essay on her website, she wrote, “If you open the doors of bathrooms and dressing rooms to every man who thinks or feels he is a woman… open the door to any men who wish to come in.” “

Her position has been interpreted by some as transphobic, prompting calls to boycott the Harry Potter franchise, which ranges from his books and films to the blockbuster video game Hogwarts Legacy.

Harry Potter film actors such as Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson have criticized Rowling’s comments.

Ralph Fiennes, who played Lord Voldemort, defended the author, calling the abuse she was subjected to “disgusting” and “appalling”.

She has denied being transphobic, saying she respects “every trans person’s right to live in a way that feels authentic and comfortable to them,” and she wants trans people to be free from discrimination and abuse.

Stars like Eddie Izzard and Helena Bonham Carter have also said they don’t see Rowling’s views as transphobic but instead reflect their own experiences of abuse.

In the podcast, titled The Witch Trials of JK Rowling, the author said she’s also received “direct threats of violence” because of her attitude.

“I’ve had people come to my house where my kids live and I’ve had my address posted online.

Rowling later said that many questions don’t necessarily have definite answers.

“There’s a great appeal to black and white thinking and I try to show that in the Potter books.

“It’s the easiest place and in many ways the safest place. If you take an all-or-nothing position on anything, you will definitely find comrades, you will easily find community. ‘I swore allegiance to this one simple idea.’

“What I’ve tried to show in the Potter books, and what I feel strongly myself, is that we should mistrust each other the most when we’re sure.”

The Witch Trials of JK Rowling is a seven-part series presented by Megan Phelps-Roper, who grew up in the extremist Westboro Baptist Church for 26 years before fleeing in 2012.

The first two episodes, released on Tuesday, attempt to draw parallels between the Christian fundamentalists who tried to ban the Harry Potter books in the early 2000s and the activists who criticize Rowling today.

When asked about the protesters who burned their books in the early 2000s, claiming they promoted witchcraft, Rowling said, “By definition, book burners have posed above a line of rational debate.

“There is not a book on this planet that I would burn, including books that I believe are harmful. For me, burning is the last resort for people who cannot argue.”

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. renews a Daytona 500 series not seen in nearly 30 years – Sportscasting

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. became the latest surprise Daytona 500 winner in a series of upsets that have made the outcome of NASCAR’s biggest race one of the most unpredictable parts of the Cup Series season.

Stenhouse triumphed Sunday at Daytona International Speedway for his third career win and first since 2017 when he won the spring race at Talladega Superspeedway and the summer race at Daytona.

And that actually makes him the most successful Daytona 500 winner since Denny Hamlin won his third Great American Race in 2020.

In the years since Hamlin’s win, Michael McDowell recorded his only Cup Series win at the 2021 Daytona 500, and 2022 rookie Austin Cindric earned his first and only Cup Series win the following year.

The last three Daytona 500 winners have combined five Cup Series wins from 835 combined starts at the sport’s highest level. The Daytona 500 has not had a three-year run with winners so close to Cup Series victories since 1993-95, when Dale Jarrett and Sterling Marlin established their careers in the Cup Series.

Jarrett eventually put together a resume that included 32 Cup Series wins, three Daytona 500 wins, and the 1999 series championship. All of this led to his induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2014, but his future was still fairly uncertain as he buckled into the #18 car for Joe Gibbs Racing to drive the 1993 Daytona 500.

Former football coach Joe Gibbs had founded JGR just a year earlier and Jarrett finished 19th in points standings in 1992 with just two top five finishes. Jarrett had raced full-time at the Cup Series level since 1987, but his only victory had come in 1991 when he drove the No. 21 car for Wood Brothers Racing at Michigan International Speedway.

Jarrett then passed Dale Earnhardt in a famous finish with Jarrett’s father and fellow Hall of Famer Ned in the broadcast booth announcing the race for CBS. The younger Jarrett then won at least one race in each of the next 10 seasons.

Jarrett won the Daytona 500 again in 1996, but only after Marlin had claimed two Daytona 500 wins for his first two career Cup Series wins.

Marlin was in the Cup Series much longer than Jarrett before claiming his first Daytona 500 win. Marlin made his debut in the Cup Series in 1976 at the age of 19. He didn’t run his first full season until 1987, but went winless in his first seven full-time campaigns despite 33 top-five finishes, including eight runners-up.

Marlin then moved to Morgan-McClure Motorsports for the 1994 season and immediately took the No. 4 car to victory lane at the Daytona 500 with a narrow win over Ernie Irvan. He won a pole honor at Phoenix Raceway in the penultimate race of the 1994 season, but did not revisit Victory Lane until the Cup Series returned to Daytona to begin the 1995 season with the Daytona 500.

Marlin led 105 of the 200 laps by a race best, edging out Earnhardt to become the first driver to win back-to-back Daytona 500s since Cale Yarborough did in 1983-84.

Marlin won twice more in the 1995 season, finishing third in the final points classification. He didn’t have nearly the success that Jarrett did later in his career, but he did eventually win 10 career races. He also finished third overall in 2001 and led the points standings with seven races remaining in the 2002 season before a broken neck forced him to miss the remainder of the season.

Austin Cindric is the most likely youngest Daytona 500 winner to eventually be consistently up front

As for the current trio of underdog winners of the Daytona 500, Cindric is probably the only one of the three who still has the potential to build a career similar to Jarrett or Marlin. Cindric is only 24 years old, McDowell is 38 and Stenhouse is 35.

Cindric also drives for a strong team at Team Penske, which won the Cup Series championship a year ago, while McDowell’s Front Row Motorsports and Stenhouse’s JTG Daugherty Racing organizations have just six wins and three playoff appearances combined.

Another surprise winner in 2024 is certainly a strong possibility as well, as the Cup Series field is as even as ever when it comes to the next-gen car and pack races that Daytona is producing.

Parity was one of the top storylines of the 2023 season, and the Daytona 500 managed to fit well into that framework, with riders taking one of the few opportunities on the schedule for the full field to have a legitimate shot at the race to win.

China has presented its vision for a “political solution” to the conflict in Ukraine to Russia, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday after the head of Chinese diplomacy Wang Yi’s trip to Moscow.

“The Chinese partners have shared with us their thoughts on the causes of the Ukraine crisis as well as their approaches to its political solution,” Russia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement. “There was no question of a separate ‘plan’ (peace),” he noted, however. As a close ally of Russia, China has never publicly supported or criticized the invasion of Ukraine, while repeatedly voicing support for Moscow in the face of Western sanctions. But she has also repeatedly called for respect for Ukraine’s territorial integrity, while Moscow is calling for the annexation of five Ukrainian regions.

Beijing did not consult Kiev when drafting its peace plan»

A senior Ukrainian official responded Wednesday, telling multiple media outlets, “China has not consulted us.” Beijing has promised to release its “political solution proposal” this week, in time for the first anniversary of the start of the Russian offensive in Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

The head of Ukraine’s diplomacy, Dmytro Kouleba, who met his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Germany, announced in Brussels on Tuesday that the latter had “informed him about the key elements of the Chinese peace plan”. “We are waiting to receive this text to study it in detail because we cannot draw any conclusions after an oral presentation,” added Dmytro Kouleba.

red lines

For his part, Ukraine’s top official warned on Wednesday that no peace plan should cross “the red lines set by Kyiv,” including territorial concessions to Russia, which occupies territories in eastern and southern Ukraine, notably the Crimean peninsula. “For Ukraine, the red lines are the principles of the UN Charter, including respect for Ukraine’s territorial integrity,” the official said. “There will be no negotiations on Ukrainian territory, the President (Volodymyr Zelenskyy) has already clearly said that,” he warned.

On the Russian side, the Foreign Ministry announced in the evening that China had presented its vision of a “political solution” to the conflict through its diplomatic chief Wang Yi in Moscow. “The Chinese partners have shared with us their thoughts on the root causes of the Ukraine crisis as well as their approaches to its political solution,” the Russian ministry said in a statement.

Putin Revokes Moldova’s Decree of Sovereignty: What It Is and What’s Happening Now

February 22, 2023 4:49 p.m

Moscow annuls the treaty on the future of Transnistria, a small Moscow-backed separatist Moldovan strip bordering Ukraine and home to 1,500 Russian soldiers. The reasons for the crisis and the scenarios

handle

Wladimir Putin he has recanted a decree of May 2012 who supported Moldova’s sovereignty and renewed Russian aims towards the country borders with Ukraine. The document was prepared as part of the “Measures for the implementation of the foreign policy of the Russian Federation” with a special focus on Transnistria, pro-Russian separatist region supported by Moscow, which stationed Russian troops right next to the “hot” border. The real question is: What’s happening now? How to interpret the Kremlin’s move? And again, what is this rescinded decree?

decree repealed After again accused the West of instigating the conflict in Ukraine, the Russian President sharply deviates from the goals of cooperation with the EU signed eleven years ago to create a “single economic and human space from the Atlantic to the Pacific” and the development of “relationships with NATO”. One of the most urgent points is precisely the “solution of the Transnistria problem on the basis of respect for Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity”. All suddenly cancelled. So the frozen conflict between Moldova and Transnistria, like others in the ex-Soviet territories on the Black Sea (and since 2014 like Donbass), threatens to explode another powder keg.

What does Russia want The international media, led by the Guardian, has underscored Russia’s strong restart of a hybrid campaign in relation to Moldova, a strategic country for the fate of the ongoing war. Some also report planning a Moscow-backed coup to install a “friendly” regime in tiny neighboring nation Ukraine. An indication of this thesis would be the resignation of the pro-European Moldovan government in early February, which could not withstand the weight of the socio-economic (very deep) and political crisis that deepened in the country after February 24, 2022. Internal and external pressures delivered the coup de grace to Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita, who was replaced by Dorin Recean. However, this election upholds the pro-EU (and anti-Russian) line of Maia Sandu’s presidency and is therefore “uncomfortable” for the Kremlin. On February 13, the Moldovan President himself publicly denounced the existence of a Russian plan to undermine the government from within using covert foreign agents.

The historical reasons The territorial integrity of Moldova, a formally neutral post-Soviet country and candidate for EU membership, has been severely tested since 1990 by the Republic of Transnistria, a de facto independent Moscow-backed territory. It is not for nothing that the clashes that led to this state of affairs thirty years ago are referred to as the “Transnistrian War”. This small strip, drawn by the course of the Dniester River and by the borders of Ukraine’s Odessa Oblast, was part of the Republic of Ukraine after World War I, only to become an autonomous political entity in 1924 called the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic with capital Tiraspol, but still in communist Ukraine. Moldova, then called Bessarabia, was instead incorporated into what is now Romania. The Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact signed by the USSR and Nazi Germany determined the Soviet occupation of Bessarabia, northern Bukovina and the establishment of the Moldavian SSR in 1940. Transnistria was incorporated into the newly born socialist republic. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, Moldova declared its independence and “voided” the pact of half a century earlier.

Why Moldova The causes of the crisis in Moldova, with only 2.5 million inhabitants and the lowest GDP per capita in Europe, are largely linked to Russian measures. Indeed, from an energy perspective, the country is completely dependent on Russian supplies, which have been capped by the Kremlin. The inflation rate has risen to 30% and fuel bills have almost reached the equivalent of a minimum monthly pension. Moldova has also long been the target of cyberattacks and the pro-Russian media’s push for disinformation. This has been exacerbated by the arrival of over 700,000 Ukrainian refugees since the war began. Russia then also blocked imports of Moldovan wine, the main product of the country’s agri-food industry.

Strategic Transnistria About 1,500 Russian soldiers are stationed in breakaway Transnistria, just a stone’s throw from Ukraine. The strategic value of this independent republic is not only geographical. According to Moscow’s calculations, the freezing of conflicts in the area should serve to create a buffer to NATO, just like with Ukraine before the invasion of Crimea in 2014 and the country in 2022. With the Minsk agreements, for example, the Kremlin aimed at federalization of Ukraine, which relies on the breakaway regions as leverage to maneuver Kiev’s security and foreign policy. If, on the one hand, Transnistria bears the shadow of Russia, on the other hand, there is a Moldova embraced by the US and Britain: the former are building one of the largest American embassies in Chisinau, while London emphasizes the need for the military to equip the country to NATO standards to protect it from the threat to protect against a Russian invasion. Meanwhile, however, Transnistria presents itself as a veritable Moscow-loyal fortress, resisting possible ultra-nationalist infiltrations from Ukraine and seeing ammunition depots like the large Kolbasna camp scattered throughout the territory. The latent conflict (?) between Chisinau and Tiraspol is a violin string ready to vibrate. Not to mention that, according to independent surveys, more than 42% of Transnistrian residents identify themselves as “ethnic Russians”, the people of the independent republic.

What’s happening now? Precisely because of its strategic importance, Moldova represents for many the “next Ukraine” to escalate the conflict. The same US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, expressed his concern to the Moldovan President at the Munich conference about a possible conspiracy aimed at establishing a pro-Moscow regime in Moldova. Though a full-blown “Ukraine-style” invasion seems unlikely, Moldova is at the center of the Russian chessboard. The presence of pro-Russian oligarchs with huge capitals and a sizeable ethnic Russian minority are factors in Moscow’s favour. Bringing Moldova back into Russia’s sphere of influence would also destroy military cooperation with neighboring Romania, a NATO-EU bulwark in the region. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov recently described Moldova as the West’s new “anti-Russian project”. The extent of the social unrest on the Ukrainian flank, which could be used with a dangerous “pincer effect”, should not be overlooked all the more. For the time being, the country remains crushed under pressure from the West and Russia. Just like Ukraine before the outbreak of war.
