How ChatGPT Started the Gold Rush in Silicon Valley

How ChatGPT Started the ‘Gold Rush’ in Silicon Valley

How ChatGPT Started the Silicon Valley Gold Rush

ChatGPT has grown into one of the fastest growing apps of all time.

San Francisco:

ChatGPT, Silicon Valley’s latest app sensation, has investors rushing to find the next big thing in generative AI, the technology some are hailing as the dawn of a new era in big tech.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been a growing part of everyday life for decades, but the launch of startup OpenAI’s conversational robot in November marked a turning point in its perception by the general public and investors.

“Every now and then we have platforms that emerge and lead to an explosion of new businesses. We’ve seen this with the web and mobile, and AI could be the next platform,” said Shernaz Daver of Khosla Ventures in California.

Generative AI, of which ChatGPT is an example, wades through oceans of data to conjure up original content — an image, a poem, a thousand-word essay — in seconds and upon simple request.

Since its discreet release in late November, ChatGPT has grown into one of the fastest-growing apps of all time, pushing Microsoft and Google to accelerate projects that have been carefully guarded over fears that the technology isn’t ready for the public .

“Just five days after its release, one million people were using ChatGPT — about 60 times faster than it took Facebook to reach one million users,” said Wayne Hu, a partner at SignalFire, another venture capital firm.

“Suddenly all investors are talking about how ChatGPT could eliminate millions of knowledge worker jobs, disrupt trillion-dollar industries, and fundamentally change the way we learn, consume, and make decisions,” he said.

The explosion of generative AI comes at an otherwise surly time for the tech sector, with tens of thousands of layoffs sweeping through the world’s largest companies as well as smaller companies struggling to survive.

“While other categories are facing declines in valuations and fundraising, generative AI companies are not,” Daver said.

Hu said that market valuations for generative AI companies have skyrocketed while everything else has declined.

– “Hard to Hold” –

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is valued by Microsoft at nearly $30 billion, though it’s still burning money at a fast pace, he said.

Entrepreneurs specializing in generative AI say they no longer need to scream for attention or go through the details of their offering when looking for cash.

“It helped us a lot,” said Sarah Nagy, founder of Seek AI, a start-up that enables non-experts to extract technical data from a database using queries in everyday language.

“Before ChatGPT… I had to explain what generative AI is and why it’s important,” she added.

Now the appetite for ChatGPT-like features seems to have no limit, and not just from investors.

“Customer demand has risen sharply,” said Nagy. “It’s even hard to keep up because we’re still a small company.”

The entrepreneur is looking to grow her team, and according to Daver, while the trend is downsizing, “we’re currently hiring” in generative AI.

In the past few weeks it has been the giants that have been in the news, most notably Microsoft, partner and investor in OpenAI, followed by Google trying to keep up.

But in its shadow, a galaxy of startups has ideas to offer as well.

Other recent examples of funding rounds include California-based Kognitos, which aims to automate administrative tasks, and designer platform Poly, which can create 3D graphics or maps in seconds.

In addition to the usual venture capitalists, tech giants are on the lookout, such as Google, which just invested $300 million to acquire 10 percent of newcomer Anthropic and its chatbot Claude.

Hu said ChatGPT’s “gold rush” could be unprecedented and expand far beyond generative AI, as the technology itself minimizes the need for a computer coder or designer to implement ideas.

“Now you don’t need a Ph.D. in computer science anymore: any developer can build something amazing on top of ChatGPT and other foundational models in a weekend.”

“This AI wave could be bigger than mobile or the cloud and more on the scale of something like the industrial revolution that changed the course of human history,” Hu said.

Announcing Directors Guild Winners (Live Update)

A view of the Directors Guild of America building in Los Angeles, California on December 17, 2021.

The DGA Awards are underway at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. On TV, “Severance,” “Station Eleven,” and “The Daily Show” were among the top performers (each with two nods), while Steven Spielberg was fighting for his fourth trophy, for the semi-autobiographical “The Fabelmans.” But also on the hunt are Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the duo behind the sci-fi comedy Everything Everywhere All at Once.

At the DGA, Spielberg holds the record for most nominations and wins with 13 and three, respectively. If Daniels wins, they would be the third directing duo to ever win.

The DGA has a voting body of around 19,000 members. In its 75-year history, the DGA Awards has been the most reliable barometer for the Best Director Oscar. Only eight DGA winners remained without an Oscar, most recently Sam Mendes (“1917”), who lost to Bong Joon Ho (“Parasite”) in 2020.

The evening began with “Fire of Love” director Sara Dosa winning the award for Best Documentary. It was her first nomination and her first win at the DGA Awards. “It’s really been a struggle and I’m so thankful to have my dream job,” she said.

Glenn Weiss won his ninth DGA Award (his first in 2018), this time for CBS’s 75th Annual Tony Awards, in the Variety/Talk/News/Sports Specials. Weiss revealed he eloped with now-wife Jan on Valentine’s Day; The director famously and very publicly proposed to his girlfriend onstage during the 2018 Emmy Awards.

DGA President Lesli Linka Glatter opened the award ceremony with a brief reference to the forthcoming guild contract negotiations with the municipal studios.

“In this ever-changing, complicated and sometimes hostile environment for creative people in our industry, we are committed to ensuring that creative excellence and commercial stability endure so you can achieve your vision,” she said. “And I can guarantee you one thing – the DGA will fight like hell to protect that future for our directors and their teams.

“Later this spring we will be back at the table. And rest assured – we will be ready. It boils down to this: we are all partners in this business. Partner. That means negotiating a new contract that continues to treat our members fairly and with respect, that recognizes and rewards our important contributions to this industry no matter how it evolves, that strengthens our common interest in building a healthy, vibrant and stable business, that will entertain and delight audiences around the world.

“DGA stands ready and willing to fight for an excellent deal to secure the future of the directors and their teams – and that is exactly what we will achieve,” she added.

Judd Apatow again hosted this year’s ceremony. The event, which returned live last year after going virtual in 2021, is part of a busy holiday weekend at the Kudos Gauntlet, which also includes BAFTA and Art Directors Guild events. Here’s a look at this year’s winners.

Mac McClung, who has played 2 NBA games, goes from viral dunk fame to slam dunk champion

How. (Photo by Patrick T. Fallon/AFP) (Photo by PATRICK T. FALLON/AFP via Getty Images)

The 2023 NBA Slam Dunk Champion looked like a fan who had won a contest, complete with a jersey he’d never worn in a game.

Only die-hard NBA fans (or somewhat dedicated college basketball fans) had likely heard the name Mac McClung before Saturday, given his resume that spans a solid college career at Georgetown and Texas Tech, an impressive G-League career, two total NBA games and some viral dunking clips existed.

By attending, McClung made history as the first G-League player to be invited to one of the NBA’s premier events.

By the end of the night, McClung — who participated in a Philadelphia 76ers jersey after signing a two-way contract with the team four days ago — cemented himself as one of the most memorable dunk contest winners of all time and the newest person who “save” the event.

McClung showed he was special from the first dunk as he vaulted over two people and bounced the ball off the backboard for a clear perfect 50 score.

He followed that up with a spinning dunk, which also earned a 50, but just missed:

By now the direction of the night was clear. McClung might have faced three real NBA players — KJ Martin of the Houston Rockets, Trey Murphy III of the New Orleans Pelicans, and Jericho Sims of the New York Knicks — but he was the star.

The final against Murphy was basically a no-contest. McClung opened with what was arguably his weakest dunk, but it could still have been the night’s fourth-best performance.

And then he revealed he saved his best for last:

For an event that seems to trigger an existential crisis every year when its roster of no-names is announced, McClung has made sure it’s worth the price of admission.

“I love Vince Carter and just watching Zach LaVine and Aaron Gordon’s dunk contest was so much fun,” McClung told reporters after the event. “I was like, ‘Man, if I can be a part of this one day, I hope I can make an impact like these guys.’ I got a lot of inspiration from them here in this corner.”

The story goes on

This could also just be the beginning of his legend, as revealed in his post-event interview with TNT:

If you want me, I’ll be back.”

McClung, who played two seasons at Georgetown and one for Texas Tech, was not drafted in the 2021 NBA draft. He began his career with the South Bay Lakers in the G League, signed with the Chicago Bulls to play a game for them, then returned to the Lakers and was named 2022 G League Rookie of the Year.

He opened this season on the Golden State Warriors’ Summer League roster but was released in early October. That saw him join the Delaware Blue Coats, a Sixers subsidiary, where he waited until Wednesday to secure a two-way contract with the big league club.

This was a good first impression.

Suriname: Looting, arrests and internet shutdown on the sidelines of demonstrations against the high cost of living Marti

In Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname, the February 17, 2023 demonstrations against the high cost of living degenerated. The National Assembly was attacked and shops were looted. Local residents demonstrated against rising prices and the government’s removal of subsidies for fuel, electricity and gas.

On Friday, February 17, 2023, thousands of protesters mobilized in the streets of Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname, at the call of trade unions and opposition groups.

Two groups even withdrew from a coalition with Suriname’s President Chandrikapersad Santokhi’s party in the 2020 elections.

Since the government’s announcement on February 7, 2023 to end subsidies for essential products such as fuel, electricity and gas, the people of Surinamese have started to express their frustration, including the resignations of President Chandrikapersad Santokhi and Ronnie Brunswijk, the Vice Presidents, demanded.

On February 17, the situation escalated. Police used tear gas to disperse protesters attempting to enter the National Assembly building and began looting shops in downtown Paramaribo.

Suriname is on the lifeline of an IMF (International Monetary Fund) bailout package that calls for the government to cut spending.

By removing subsidies for fuel, electricity and gas, the government hopes to save 56 million euros a year.

The oil companies SOL and Rubis require payment in advance for deliveries to Suriname.

The Surinamese dollar is losing its value. The prices have exploded. With a minimum wage of 57 cents an hour, the population suffers.

President Chandrikapersad Santokhi is currently in the Bahamas for the CARICOM Summit of Heads of State or Government.

In a press release, CARICOM condemned the violence in Suriname and attempts to destabilize the government.

The Suriname government has imposed a curfew from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. until further notice. Telesur, the main internet service provider in Suriname, has blocked all access to social networks, an unprecedented censorship in the country.

The embassies of the United States, France and Canada are asking their nationals to avoid the capital, Paramaribo.

Germany flight operations normalize after warning strike BVZat

Germany: flight operations normalize after warning strike BVZ.at

After the end of the ban on night flights at 5 am, operations in Frankfurt began as normal. However, there will be more takeoffs and landings on Saturday to clear the delay. The spokeswoman reported queues in front of security checks.

The day after the strike notice, planes took off again at Munich Airport as normal – but it was significantly busier than usual. “There are no further failures related to the attack,” an airport spokesman said. However, he said, long queues formed at security checkpoints because “a lot of traffic was diverted from Friday to Saturday”. Also, Friday was the last day of school before the Bavarian carnival break.

The snakes “run through the building,” the spokesperson said. He was “enormously busy” – significantly more so than on a normal Saturday. However, it is difficult to estimate how long passengers would have to wait in line. He couldn’t say if any of them missed their flights because of it. “We have no chance of catching our flight,” said a passenger who said she was at the airport three hours before departure – and was still waiting in line half an hour before the plane was scheduled to take off.

Operations at Hamburg airport proceeded normally. “Everything is going perfectly normally,” a spokeswoman said. According to the website, the waiting time at the security checkpoint in the afternoon was a few minutes. It was said in the morning that the previous day’s rebookings could lead to a significantly higher load factor for individual flights. The spokeswoman emphasized in the afternoon that the airport only had figures on actual capacity utilization after the fact.

Operations at Stuttgart Airport are also back to normal. No failures were recorded in the flight schedule on Saturday morning. “Regular operations again,” the airport wrote on Twitter. According to a spokeswoman, only the first two flights were canceled at Bremen airport. Three more flights were canceled early in the morning in Hanover, but the first machines took off again around 5am.

A total of seven airports were largely brought to a standstill by Friday’s warning strike. Verdi’s union has called for a full-day strike and, in the current collective labor conflict in the public sector, is also threatening warning strikes at the rubbish dump, in hospitals or public order offices. According to the airport association ADV, around 300,000 passengers across the country were affected by 2,300 flight cancellations.

Passengers were also advised on Saturday to check the status of their flights. Even after the strike, there may be isolated changes to flight schedules, he said. In addition, passengers must report to the check-in desk in good time. Fraport recommends 2.5 hours before departure.
