“Poly” code for weapon-friendly goods: A survivor of the Polytechnique massacre shocked
The use of a “Poly” promotional code created by the Canadian Gun Rights Coalition to encourage the purchase of merchandise on its website sparked outrage from a survivor of Friday’s Polytechnique shooting.
“I feel that this is an incredible lack of respect for the victims, but also for what the Polytechnique events represent for Quebec society,” said Nathalie Provost, a survivor of the December 6, 1989 tragedy, in an interview with TVA Nouvelles.
His shock was shared by the Polytechnique Montreal on Friday night, just days before the 33rd anniversary of the murder of the woman.
Tracey Wilson, the coalition’s vice president of public affairs, had specifically promoted this offer in a tweet published on November 20. “Save 10% with promotional code POLY,” reads his account.
This publication came in direct response to a tweet by the organization PolySeSouvient denouncing the goods promoted by the coalition.
“We see in this manipulation of a tragic event not only a very tasteless provocation, but above all an insult to the memory of the victims, the injured, their families and the entire Polytechnique community,” Polytechnique Montreal said in a press release.
According to Ms. Provost, Ottawa’s chosen strategy to ensure better gun control will not change much in the way gun advocates in the country perceive it.
“I think whatever strategy you use to advocate for stronger gun control, there will be trouble,” she said.
Regarding Federal Weapons Control Act C-21, the survivor said she was pleased with the progress.
“It’s a happy medium, it’s a request we’ve had for a very long time. […] What we want is to limit offensive weapons, not stop people from hunting,” she said.
Recall that in December 1989, a gunman killed 14 women at the École Polytechnique de Montréal.
