“The specter of ‘America first’, Donald Trump’s slogan, hovers over the Ukraine conflict”

What would happen to Ukraine if Donald Trump currently occupies the White House Oval Office? In 2019, he was indicted by the House of Representatives for abuse of power after temporarily blocking military aid to Kyiv. It was then his turn to force the Ukrainian judiciary to investigate his future opponent in the 2020 presidential election, Joe Biden.

What would have become of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) if he had been re-elected in 2020? The Republican’s former national security adviser and now one of his harshest critics, John Bolton, asserted in his memoirs that the latter would have used a second term to pull the United States out of it. However, he never concealed his contempt for the transatlantic organization, even before he came to power. Ex-diplomat Richard Haas, who is about to step down as head of the Council on Foreign Relations, a think tank in Washington, didn’t he describe his foreign policy at the time as a “doctrine of retreat”?

These questions are not rhetorical. In the midterm elections, which take place in the United States on November 8th, no ballot will contain the name of Donald Trump. Trumpism, on the other hand, will certainly play a role there, including in the foreign policy declension: a narrow-minded nationalism without any moral qualms, in which relations with other countries, whatever they are, are reduced to what they can bring to Washington, regardless of shared values or shared historical ties. A nightmare for Europeans who, with Joe Biden’s election, hoped a despicable clamp would close, and for a long time.

It took just one sentence from the possible future Speaker (President) of the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, and the specter of “America first”, Donald Trump’s slogan, hung over the Ukraine conflict. “I think people will end up in a recession and not give Ukraine a blank check,” the California politician told a Washington political news site.

“We all want to help [l’Ukraine]. At the same time, we have problems in our own country that remain unresolved and we have no idea what the government’s plan is. Like, what’s the point? Where are we going ? Are our tax dollars being used wisely? ‘ Estimated in October Scott Perry, the president of the Freedom Caucus, bringing together elected officials among most Trumpists in the House. If Congress switches to the Republican camp on January 1, 2023, will American aid be drastically reduced?

Woman killed and swallowed by python in Indonesia Chronicle

A 50-year-old woman in the Indonesian province of Jambi met a horrible end: she was killed and devoured by a python.
Her name was Jahrah and she has been reported missing since Sunday morning when she left home to go to work on a rubber plantation, local media reported, quoted online by BBC News. The search began Monday until yesterday villagers found what appeared to be a large-stomached python. At this point, the locals killed the snake, which was at least five meters long, and found the woman’s body inside.

“The victim was found inside the snake’s stomach,” Betara Police Chief Jambi told local media, adding that the body appeared largely intact when found.

While such incidents are rare, this isn’t the first time someone has been killed and eaten by a python in Indonesia. Two similar deaths were reported between 2017 and 2018. Pythons swallow their food whole. Their jaws are connected by very flexible ligaments, allowing them to stretch around large prey, which can include animals as large as pigs or even cows.

US uses Ukraine against Russia, says Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin

MOSCOW, October 26. – Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday that the US is using Ukraine as a battering ram against his country while speaking at the 51st meeting of Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) security chiefs, reports PL.

According to TV channel Rossiya 24, Putin focused his attention on the fact that armed conflicts are being fueled near the borders of CIS members.

“What they’re doing with that, we can see in Ukraine, which has become an instrument of American foreign policy, and it’s a country that has lost its sovereignty,” he said.

Referring to the sabotage of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea, he added that these are actions causing colossal damage to the European economy and worsening the lives of millions of people.

On the so-called old continent, however, people are silent about who did it and who is interested in it, said the head of state.

Putin later explained that attempts to script color revolutions and foment conflict in the Commonwealth of Independent States space continue.

“The tactics of blackmail, pressure and intimidation have long been used by certain countries practically throughout the CIS region,” he noted.

Putin also pointed to the danger posed by the black market in weapons operating in Ukraine, noting that there are powerful weapons there, such as man-portable anti-aircraft missile systems and some high-precision ones.

Another threat to the CIS is the danger posed by terrorist organizations such as Al Qaeda and the Islamic State, which try to infiltrate the countries of the community and set up secret cells.

Putin: Ukraine has lost sovereignty the US is running the country

  • Vladimir Putin sees US handwriting in Kiev’s decisions.
  • The United States used the country as a “ram”.
  • At the same time, the Kremlin chief renewed accusations that Ukraine planned to use the so-called “dirty bomb”.

More news about the war in Ukraine

According to Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin, Ukraine “de facto” lost its sovereignty as a state and left control of the country to the United States. The US today used Ukraine as a “bashing ram” against Russia and the post-Soviet space, Putin told a meeting of representatives of state security bodies from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries on Wednesday. CIS members include the former Soviet republics of Belarus and Armenia, the Central Asian states of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

Putin urged the countries’ intelligence agencies to be vigilant. The US is arming Ukraine with more and more heavy weapons, ignoring that the country is aiming a nuclear bomb.

Vladimir Putin has repeatedly accused Ukraine of planning to use a “dirty bomb”.

“It is also known that there are plans for a provocation to use the so-called dirty bomb,” said the 70-year-old. For days, the Russian leadership has repeatedly claimed that Ukraine plans to use such a radioactive bomb without providing any evidence.

Ukraine dismisses these allegations as “nonsense” and a disinformation campaign by Putin. The West also sees no evidence of this.

However, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu called his colleagues in China and India again to draw attention to this danger. The Kremlin announced that Moscow is also in talks with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Ukraine invited IAEA experts to see for themselves that the Russian claims were unfounded.

A “dirty bomb” consists of radioactive material released with conventional explosives. Unlike an atomic bomb, there is no nuclear chain reaction. Russia made its claims on Sunday, which Ukraine, the US, France and Britain rejected.

Despite this, Russia persists in its claim that Ukraine has such a bomb and intends to use it. Moscow has yet to present any evidence. Instead, Russia is suspected of preparing to use a “dirty bomb” on Ukraine itself. (dpa/ank)

Bella Hadid led a host of celebrities attending Fashion Trust Arabia’s awards ceremony in Doha, Qatar on Wednesday amid human rights controversy in the country.

In recent weeks, Bella has taken to social media to comment on the current protests in Iran following the death of a young woman who died after being arrested by vice squads.

She shared several posts from human rights activist and designer Celine Semaan Vernon, including her own passionate message.

Since the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, women across the Islamic Republic have been burning their hijabs, the head covering required by the Iranian government, and cutting their hair.

“Our sisters are being murdered to have the right. The right to exist in all your freedom, she wrote, “The freedom to choose your sovereignty over your own body. Unarmed, faced with the police and their guns. How can women make a militarized dominant majority so threatened and insecure?’

“Control of our bodies is the same need to control our country and our earth. Patriarchy is the disease.”

Bella has also been vocal about her opinion on the geopolitical conflict between Israel and Palestine on social media in the past.

In a post she said: “Today and every day I feel a deep sense of pain for Palestine and for my Palestinian brothers and sisters. Watching these videos physically breaks my heart into 100 different pieces.

“You must not become desensitized to seeing human lives being taken. You just can’t. Palestinian lives are the lives that will help change the world. And within seconds they are taken from us. #Free Palestine.’

Qatar has faced an intense scrutiny of the physical and contractual conditions for hundreds of thousands of migrant workers in the tiny emirate since it won the rights to host the World Cup 12 years ago.

It remains to be seen how much time World Cup broadcasters will spend highlighting allegations against the Qatari government, including The Guardian’s 2013 claims that workers were denied food and water and had their passports revoked.

Some claim they were not paid, or if they were, the payments were minimal and long overdue. A 2019 study by the Daily Mirror found that 28,000 workers were paid about $1 an hour over a 48-hour week.

Most damningly, The Wall Street Journal reported in 2015 that over 1,200 workers died building infrastructure for the tournament. Last year The Guardian put that number at around 6,500.

Qatar also punishes homosexuality with prison and regards men as protectors of their female relatives.

There are also strict laws on alcohol, drugs, public intimacy, extramarital affairs, dress codes, and swearing.

In March, FIFA President Gianni Infantino claimed Qatar had been progressive on workers’ rights: “I welcome the strong commitment shown by the Qatari authorities to ensure reforms are fully implemented across the labor market and a lasting legacy of the FIFA World Cup leave long after the event, and it benefits migrant workers in the host country in the long term.’

Some activists have urged celebrities to boycott the World Cup, with Robbie Williams and David Beckham both facing criticism for their association with the competition.

Robbie was recently unveiled during a press conference in Doha as one of the musical acts who will be performing at the Qatar Live concerts.

Meanwhile, David has agreed to a £10m deal to become the country’s ambassador for over a decade, which has resulted in him being the face of the 2022 World Cup.

Gio Ewbank corrects Antonio Fagundes live after the actor slipped up

Last Tuesday (25th), the veteran Antonio Fagundes was a special guest on the Quem Pode Pod podcast presented by the actresses Gio Ewbank and Fernanda Paes Leme.

During the conversation with the muses, the actor spoke about various topics of his personal life, career and even remembered some of his emblematic characters. However, in the midst of the pleasant and relaxed conversation, Antonio Fagundes committed a faux pas that did not go unnoticed.

Coincidentally, at a certain point in the interview, the topic of the importance of soap operas in the public debate on social agendas was raised. At that moment, the Globo veteran used a pejorative term to refer to itthe LGBTQIAP+ audience.

And don’t stop there

If you think it’s over, you’re wrong, so Gio Ewbank, wife of actor Bruno Gagliasso, asked Antonio Fagundes a big question.

“Don’t you think it suddenly took Open TV a while to ask important questions?” asked Gio Ewbank. Antonio Fagundes then commented on what was asked: “But he did it! If you take our soap opera from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s for example, the social issues raised in the dramaturgy, O Rei do Gado spoke about the agrarian reform,” he began to say.

He continued: “The soap operas of Glória Perez, for example, raise serious problems in society,” said Antonio Fagundes.

Then the Globo heartthrob committed a faux pas and was immediately corrected by Gio Ewbank: “We talked about homosexuality, we talked about prostitution,” said the actor.

As soon as the muse noticed the error of her interlocutor and professional colleague, she gently interrupted him: “But at the same time, the gay kiss took a long time to be placed. It took a long time for homoaffective relationships to form, didn’t it?” corrected the actress, using the term “homoaffectives” instead of “homosexuality”.

For those who don’t know, the term “homosexuality” is considered derogatory to the LGBTQIAP+ community.

Silvi Tourigny pulls off a hilarious gag in La Semaine

Silvi Tourigny pulls off a hilarious gag in La Semaine des 4 Julie that involves both Julie Snyder and her successor being skinned

While Julie Snyder is on holiday for a week, Guylaine Tremblay replaces her at the helm of La Semaine des 4 Julie.

Carole helps her neighbor, the character of comedian Silvi Tourigny, was on the set of the Noovo talk show on Monday night to toast the new host.

While showing Guylaine Tremblay how to dance like Julie Snyder, that is, off beat, she said, “The goal is to dance like you have a sponsorship problem to forget. »

It was already very funny, but she added a catch by saying: “Here I’m not talking about OD, in your case I’m talking about Sinorama”.

Guylaine Tremblay, who was embroiled in a scandal with the company in 2018, laughed out loud (and so did we in our living room!).

A very, very good take on the comedian!

Note that Guylaine Tremblay also made a joke earlier in the show about the problems faced by Occupation Double’s producer. “Happy Holidays my beautiful Julie! I don’t wish you too much work,” she said with a mischievous expression.

Remember that Julie Snyder will be traveling to Martinique during her vacation and will be shooting a topo with a Quebec star. All details here.

Immigrants make up almost a quarter of Canadas population

Immigrants make up almost a quarter of Canada’s population

In this new census data, the federal agency says Canada is also the country with the highest proportion of immigrants within the G7.

In 2021, Canada also surpassed its previous peak in immigrant population, which dates back exactly a century to 1921, with 22.3% immigrants.

And again, according to Statistics Canada, immigrants accounted for 80% of labor force growth from 2016 to 2021, with 1.3 million newcomers settling here permanently. This increase is important, it is said, particularly to fill the many vacancies from coast to coast.

With job vacancies at the end of last year 80% higher than before the pandemic and the workforce aging further, this increase in the number of immigrants from here could help the economy progress well, the white paper released on Wednesday pointed out.

Almost all immigrants can speak French or English

While more than two-thirds of newcomers are neither French nor English native speakers, nearly all (92.7%) say they can hold a conversation in one or the other of the two official languages.

In fact, almost two-thirds of immigrants who claim to have a non-official language as their first language still speak Molière’s or Shakespeare’s language regularly at home.

English is the most commonly spoken language in this area, whether alone or with a language other than French, Statistics Canada says.

In Quebec, French was the only official language spoken by more than half (54.5%) of immigrants during the reference period, while around 15% of new arrivals spoke both French and English.

A quarter (25.5%) of immigrants who arrived in Quebec between 2016 and 2021 spoke only English, according to the information note. And only 5% of newcomers could not express themselves in either official language.

Outside of Quebec, however, Shakespeare’s language is the only official language, spoken by about 9 in 10 immigrants, while those who only speak French as an official language accounted for just 2.1% of newcomers.

Overall, recent immigrants reported speaking a total of 450 languages. The non-official languages most commonly spoken by newcomers include Arabic, Tagalog, Mandarin and Punjabi.

Economic immigrants and mostly from Asia

Statistics Canada also notes that more than half of recent immigrants in the country were selected based on economic class, i.e. almost 750,000 people, of whom a third were selected under the federal skilled worker program and another third were selected according to the criteria of the provinces .

In Quebec, which has its own immigration criteria, 46.4% of immigrants admitted between 2016 and 2021 were admitted under a skilled worker program.

And still, as of 2016, just over a third (36%) of new immigrants arriving in the country have arrived with a work or study permit, or as asylum seekers.

The origins of these new Canadians have varied over the years. While there are fewer and fewer European immigrants, those who come from the Middle East or other Asian countries are becoming more numerous. In fact, 62% of recent immigrants between 2016 and 2021 were from this region of the world.

More precisely, almost one in five new immigrants (18.6%) was born in India.

As for European immigrants, who accounted for 61.6% of new arrivals in 1971, this proportion has fallen to 10.1% in 2021.

A plane carrying nearly 230 Ukrainian refugees lands at the airport in Regina, Saskatchewan on July 4, 2022.

Between 2016 and 2021, almost a quarter of a million refugees were granted permanent residency.

A quarter million refugees become permanent residents

In last year’s census, nearly a quarter million (218,430) new refugees were admitted as permanent residents between 2016 and 2021 and were still in the country when Statistics Canada took its snapshot of Canada’s population.

Of these, 61,000 are refugees from Syria, fleeing the civil war that is still tearing this Middle East country apart.

In addition, the origin of the refugees has changed over the years, unfortunately also because of the origin of the conflicts that are bloodying certain regions of the world.

From 1980 to 1990, most of the refugees came from Vietnam, Poland and El Salvador; Over the next decade, Sri Lanka, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iran accounted for the largest proportion of refugees admitted to Canada, the federal agency said.

From 2001 to 2010, the main countries of origin of refugees were Colombia, Afghanistan and Iraq, with the latter two countries being ravaged by wars.

With regard to Syrian refugees, the German government committed to taking in tens of thousands in 2015; 27,000 of them had already arrived in the country in the past five years when the 2016 census took place.

From 2016 to 2021, an additional 60,795 Syrian refugees were admitted and reside in the country, accounting for just over a quarter (27.8%) of the new refugees entering the country.

Other countries of origin of the refugees are Iraq, Eritrea, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Finally, nearly 85,000 immigrants who applied for asylum were granted permanent residency between 2016 and 2021.

Mostly urban immigrants

New census data also shows that almost all recent immigrants lived in one or other of the country’s 41 largest cities or towns with populations of more than 100,000.

And these are, unsurprisingly, the three metropolises that attract the most newcomers; Toronto (29.5%), Montreal (12.2%) and Vancouver (11.7%) alone received more than half of the immigrants (53.4%).

However, that proportion has fallen by about three percentage points since 2016, with the decline being particularly sharp in Montreal.

Despite this decline, just over 92% of immigrants lived in large cities last year, compared to just two-thirds of Canadian-borns.

This preference for large centers means that immigrants make up a large proportion of these cities’ populations; in Greater Toronto, the rate is nearly 50%, in Calgary about a third, and in Montreal and Winnipeg nearly a quarter.

What explains this desire to settle in the city? According to the 2022 Canada Social Survey, most new immigrants still value having a family in the area. At the same time, employment, business and educational prospects, and housing were among the top reasons immigrants considered when choosing where to live, Statistics Canada says in its briefing note.
