Two Canadian mothers are in intensive care after being mauled by a male black bear and then guarding their injured bodies “for the next meal” during an autumn walk.
Leosette Canoy and Analyn Shurtliff Bartolome were attacked by the animal on October 3 while hiking with two of their family members near Dawson Creek, British Canada.
The group of four – including Canoy’s niece and Bartolome’s son – spent the day in nature looking for places to take fall photos and enjoy the fall colors.
But hiking the Wolverine Trail on Bear Mountain suddenly turned into a disaster when just before 7 p.m. they spotted a black bear charging towards them.
Police later found the two injured women lying in the bush while the bear “guarded” them.
Canoy, who goes by the name Cheng, is currently being sedated and undergoing surgery for her horrific injuries, which lasted more than six hours after the bear “chewed her up” in the attack.
Bartolome is in a serious but stable condition, but it is feared she may lose her left arm due to the multiple lacerations she has sustained.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers found the two women lying in a SUV in the bush with life-threatening injuries. They found the large bear at the crime scene, apparently “guarding the victims.”
Just as they were finishing their fall walk, Bartolome’s teenage son heard footsteps behind the group and noticed that they were followed by a male black bear.
The animal then charged the group – and although Bartolome’s son punched the bear to scare it off, it continued on its killing spree.
After knocking the cub to the ground, the bear charged at his mother.
Canoy, who works as a caregiver for disabled people, tried to distract the bear from attacking her friend. However, the beast then turned on her.
Bartolome’s son then hit him with a large stick, stunning the bear for a moment before continuing his attack path.
Analyn’s son and Canoy’s niece escaped the attack and fled to a nearby hiker’s cabin, where they called 911 and awaited first responders.
Both Bartolome and Canoy were flown to the hospital where they remain in intensive care. The teenager is also being treated for injuries.

Police say two officers from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police found the two women in an SUV with life-threatening injuries in the bush.
They found the large bear at the crime scene, apparently “guarding the victims.”
Staff Sgt. Damon Werrell confirmed that the animal was shot by emergency services.
Gary Hansen, Canoy’s devastated husband, said he was haunted by the thought of the bear “guarding his catch, his next meal.”
Hansen told CBC, “She is my gift from God. It’s horrible to see my wife like this. The bear chewed them up badly.”
He said he was unable to hold his beloved wife’s hand while she was in the hospital because her limbs were injured so badly.
Hansen revealed his wife moved here from the Philippines about 15 years ago and fell in love with the Canadian countryside – and she often enjoys hiking and camping.
Wenneli Canoy, who was with her aunt when she was attacked, wrote on social media after the ordeal: “Most of the time I’m absent because of what happened, it keeps popping up in my head.
“I felt guilty when I saw my aunt being attacked by the bear and I escaped to call for help.
“I always cry every time I see her condition in ICU and she’s sorry.”
Canoy’s stepson Ross wrote on social media, “She is one of my favorite people on this planet.”
Officials confirmed no other bears were found during a search of the area – but the trail is currently closed to the public.
Canoy and Bartolome’s families have set up GoFundMe pages following their traumatic ordeal. You can donate to them here and here.
