Stop dying A Paul Houde there will only be one

Stop dying! A Paul Houde, there will only be one

It's an old friend of 40 years who swears to you. There will only have been one Paul Houde. A volcano of intelligence, talent, love of life and career. A comedian who didn't need lines, who created by blinking. He loved to play, have fun, interpret and, above all, make people laugh. Sometimes he took himself seriously and it worked. He was fundamentally brilliant and he liked to flaunt it, demonstrate it.

Do you want a good one? Paul Houde, who was Fern at Les Boys, was never a goalkeeper. He made producer Richard Goudreau's team believe that he had experience on the net. It was wrong. He trained in secret and learned quickly on the job, spending hours in the arena without anyone knowing. He wanted the role, he wanted to be in Les Boys and he won his bet. His understudy was often none other than Kim St-Pierre, the Olympic champion.

He was constantly reading, saving and searching. His neurons clung to everything. Astronomy, wrestling, the Chicago Blackhawks, politics, athletics, history, you name it. Francine, his wife, could tell he was dizzy, he was never in rest mode. In recent years he should have gone into an RV and taken it easy, but no. He left to conquer the United States and returned with so many video documents that he made television shows.

We were competitors on the radio for several years. Well, it was more our stations fighting against each other. Paul and I loved performing spontaneous pieces together, and he had a talent for imitation that no one else had. Claude Raymond was truer than reality. His Ti-Guy Émond was never achieved. He was the only one to imitate Guy Lafleur and Jacques Lemaire, and he succeeded Ménick without ever having gone to Figaro on Rue Masson to have his hair cut.

Paul didn't just perfect his victim's voice. He put himself in his character's shoes and very quickly and skillfully turned it into a caricature.

In the early 1980s, I was a sports columnist for his morning show on CKMF and also his sidekick. Giggles I'll never forget. I also think about the evening after his wedding to Francine in a fancy restaurant in Old Montreal.

What can we say about this scene that André Dubois wrote for the TVA show Rira bien, in which Paul and I had to kiss each other on the lips? We had to re-shoot the last take at least ten times and we both cried… Yes, we cried with laughter.

We traveled to Mexico with our sons Paul-Frédéric and my Simon. I was with three wrestling geeks who knew and talked about all the WWF stars. However, I spent the late evenings with Paul when, with a good little glass of red wine, lying on his back and watching the sky, he explained to me with so much passion the composition of the stars. It was one of his angry follies.

I refuse to believe he's gone. Like every time we lose someone we love, someone we admire, we wonder why we don't see them as much anymore. He accompanies his friend Michel Côté and also Pierre Rinfret, who was his accomplice during his years at CFGL.

Hello Paul Houde.

Caitlin Clark The Iowa Hawkeyes superstar becomes the all time leading

Caitlin Clark: The Iowa Hawkeyes superstar becomes the all-time leading scorer in NCAA basketball

Iowa Hawkeyes superstar Caitlin Clark became the NCAA's top Division I scorer in basketball – male or female – with a win over the Ohio State Buckeyes on Sunday, surpassing Hall of Famer “Pistol” Pete Maravich.

Clark entered the game with 18 points to pass Maravich and reach the all-time mark of 3,667 points. She set the record with two free throws in the final second of the first half. In a brief halftime interview, she said that the record wasn't on her mind at the time.

“Not really, but when they announced it and everyone was screaming, that’s when I knew,” she said.

Clark finished the game with 35 points, 9 assists and 6 rebounds as No. 6 Iowa defeated No. 2 Ohio State 93-83, giving her a career total of 3,685 points.

After the game, she said she was still “taking it all in.”

“I’m just really grateful for all these people who stay with us and support us and have supported us over the course of my four years,” she said. “I probably won’t realize it until a little later, but I’m just going to enjoy it with my family and my teammates and just be really grateful to be in this place.”

The 22-year-old senior is known for her sharp shooting skills and skillful play. She has become one of the biggest names of all time in college sports and recently set the all-time scoring record in NCAA women's basketball. Her first-half performance against Ohio State on Sunday was representative of her skills, as she took 15 shots, 10 from long range, and added six assists as defenders tried to stop her.

Last year, Clark shot into the public eye with her incredible play in March Madness when she led Iowa to the national championship game, the first title game appearance in school history. There, Iowa lost to the LSU Tigers in a game marked by a notable argument between Clark and LSU forward Angel Reese.

Since then, Clark has become the dominant force in all of college basketball. Now her popularity knows no bounds away from the court.

Clark's University of Iowa jerseys and T-shirts have become online retailer Fanatics' best-selling collegiate athletic edition since the company began selling collegiate sportswear in 2022, the website told . She has also signed deals with Gatorade, Nike and State Farm, among others.

Her record-breaking performance on Sunday was praised by everyone Lebron James, who holds the NBA's scoring record. sports analyst Christine Brennan said Clark's achievement was a milestone in the history of women's sports and changed the way people view basketball.

“I think Caitlin makes a lot of us look at this sport, which is such an American institution, from a different perspective,” she said.

The NCAA Division I basketball record of 3,667 career points was set in 1970 by “Pistol Pete” Maravich, the Hall of Famer known for his creative play, outside shooting and moggy hair. At LSU, Maravich scored over 44 points on 38 attempts per game over three seasons at a time when there was no three-point line, no shot clock and freshmen weren't allowed to play. He died in 1988 at the age of 40.

His son Jaeson Maravich told Yahoo Sports last week that the records were a “comparison of apples and oranges,” but added, “I think my dad would have been a big fan of hers.”

Last month, Clark became the all-time leading scorer in NCAA women's basketball, surpassing Kelsey Plum of the University of Washington. She also became the all-time leading scorer in women's major college basketball history, surpassing Lynette Woodard, who played for Kansas under her predecessor, who went to the NCAA.

Iowa guard Caitlin Clark broke the scoring record with two free throws at the end of the first half.

A Des Moines, Iowa native, Clark's 2020 commitment to her home state university has proven to be a masterstroke for herself, the Hawkeyes and women's basketball in general.

Clark took charge of the Iowa offense almost immediately, averaging nearly 27 points as a freshman. In her third season with the team, Iowa reached its first NCAA basketball national championship game, with Clark continuing her high scoring rate, adding over 7 rebounds and 8.6 assists per game.

One of the most impressive things about Clark's career was her year-to-year progress. This season, she is averaging just over 32 points – by far the most of her career – on a solid shooting percentage (46.9%), including nearly 40% from three-point range.

And the more she developed, the more attention her game received.

“I started in a year where there was Covid and you only play in front of your family and cardboard cutouts,” she told TNT Sports in October 2023. “And now, in my last year, I'm playing in front of 15,000 spectators.” Guys, it's special, it's historic.

“There’s never been anything like this in women’s basketball,” she said.

Like Steph Curry in the NBA and Sabrina Ionescu in the WNBA, Clark's ability to hit defense-breaking threes from downtown has made her an elite talent and a social media darling.

Clark said last week that she will enter the WNBA Draft at the end of this season, foregoing a final year of participation. She will likely play for the Indiana Fever after the team won the No. 1 overall pick in the lottery.

Correction: An earlier version of this story misstated the score. Caitlin Clark became the NCAA Division I all-time leading scorer in men's and women's basketball.

“He was a genius”: Michel Bergeron pays tribute to Paul Houde

Shaken by the news of the death of his colleague and friend Paul Houde, commentator Michel Bergeron has only good words for the man with whom he worked for almost 50 years.

Mr. Bergeron particularly remembers the simplicity but also the versatility of Paul Houde.

“He was a good communicator, that’s obvious. He was an exceptional host and an outstanding actor,” says the former Nordiques coach.

“He was a genius in his field,” he adds.

Michel Bergeron particularly remembers being able to appreciate the full extent of Paul Houde's knowledge as they covered the Olympics together.

“When I saw Paul talk about athletics, about artistic competitions, I was stunned because I said to myself: It can't be that a man is as knowledgeable about different areas of sport as he is!” he says.

For Michel Bergeron, Paul Houde's genius is beyond doubt.

“He knew everything he knew and helped so many people he helped in his life…It is often said that he had all the qualities required when someone leaves…but Paul had”

Clippers 89-88 Timberwolves (March 3, 2024) Game Recap

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Kawhi Leonard had 32 points and the Los Angeles Clippers defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 89-88 on Sunday in a physical and defensive game between two of the Western Conference's top four teams.

Norman Powell scored a season-high 24 points and Paul George added 15 points, but shot just 5 of 16 from the field and was 3 of 11 from 3-point range.

The Clippers were playing without Russell Westbrook after he broke his left hand in a home win over Washington on Friday night. Ivica Zubac returned after missing two games due to illness.

Anthony Edwards scored 27 points for Minnesota. The Timberwolves have lost two games in a row for just the third time this season.

Leonard broke an 84-all tie with a layup with 2:01 left and added a free throw after he was fouled by Karl-Anthony Towns.

Towns' dunk with 1:40 left brought Minnesota within a point, but Anthony Edwards missed a 3 and Towns missed with a jump shot before Leonard ended the game with two free throws.

The Timberwolves, who started the day one game ahead of Oklahoma City in the West, had won four games in a row against Los Angeles, including the first two games of the season.

Towns had 18 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Rudy Gobert added 12 points and 16 rebounds.

Senior Day couldn't have gone better for Caitlin Clark, who set the NCAA Division I college basketball points record in the Iowa Hawkeyes' victory over Ohio State, 93-83.

Clark hit two free throws at the end of the first half, surpassing Pete Maravich's previous record of 3,617 points during his years at LSU. She needed 18 points to start the game and got them all in the first half on technical foul free throws.

Clark finished her final home game of the regular season with 35 points along with nine assists and six rebounds.

Following the record-breaking performance, Clark and her other senior Hawkeyes teammates – Gabbie Marshall, Sharon Goodman, Molly Davis and Kate Martin – were honored for their years of dedication.

“I think just thinking back on my four years, I'm just very grateful,” Clark told the audience when asked how her journey has been so far.

Holly Rowe, the veteran journalist who hosted the Senior Day post-game ceremony, noted that despite her impressive accomplishments that made college basketball history, Clark always cheered on her teammates during interviews over the years.

For Clark, it's something that isn't forced. Her humble nature is a given.

“I think it’s easy,” she said of the love she showed her teammates. “These people are my best friends and this is not a show. They stand behind me and do a lot of dirty work for me to have fun and do crazy shots. … They are my best friends off the court.”

Clark loved that the Hawkeyes “came out and dominated” on Senior Day against a Buckeyes team that is ranked No. 2 in the country and beat No. 6 Iowa earlier this season.

“We played with a lot of energy,” she said. “…I’m just proud of our girls. Five seniors that have been together for a long time and we wanted to go out and send them to their home court.”

Clark said she “soaked it all up” during her final regular season game at home. However, thanks to the top teams in the NCAA Tournament hosting games, there could be a maximum of two more home games this month.

“It will be a little less bitter,” Clark said. “…I probably won’t try a little harder later.”

While the ceremony was a beautiful way to honor these Hawkeyes, a group led by Clark that has transformed college basketball not just in Des Moines but across the country, they know the work isn't done.

The Hawkeyes will depend on Clark to continue adding points to that record in the Big 10 Tournament next before the NCAA Tournament. Their performance is crucial for Iowa to return to the national championship, where they lost to the LSU Tigers last season.

Manchester City 3-1 Manchester United: Rashford's rocket, Foden the goalscorer and the inevitable Haaland

Manchester City needed to win Sunday's derby to keep the pressure on Liverpool and Arsenal at the top of the Premier League. For Manchester United, it was more about local pride, especially after the 6-3 defeat in this game last season.

We know what to expect from these games these days. City will have a lot of possession and a lot of shots, while United will look to hit their neighbors on the counterattack. The first half was exactly that. Marcus Rashford scored one of the goals of the season (0.03 xG), Erling Haaland then produced one of the misses of the season (0.89). Pep Guardiola's team had 18 shots before the break. United only had two.

City finally scored in the 56th minute thanks to a strike from Phil Foden that was just as impressive as Rashford's. That was his 17th of the season. His 18th came with ten minutes to play, capping a great-scoring derby that is perhaps even more significant given the tight situation at the top of the table. Haaland then added some sparkle to the result with a third goal in stoppage time (making up for his first-half miss).

Here, our writers break down the key moments from today's game.

How much did the injury affect Marcus Rashford's performance?

Rashford's wonder strike was all the more remarkable considering he had been struggling with injuries since the game against Nottingham Forest. As Rashford ran into the penalty area during Wednesday's FA Cup game, he was caught between two Forest defenders and took a knock in the ribs, then jammed his hip as he fell.

Rashford was able to train every session before the derby but required the attention of club doctor Gary O'Driscoll. Before the game at the Etihad, Rashford urged fans to understand his commitment to United in his column for Players Tribune and his incredible strike eight minutes later was an explosive confirmation of that statement. His passionate celebration before the crazy away game showed his passion even more.

Rashford was a real threat on the counter-attack but he wasn't perfect as he failed to control the ball in the first half as Kyle Walker chased him down and then missed his shot into the box from a cross from Bruno Fernandes.

However, Rashford didn't seem quite right. About 25 minutes later, he waved to the bench for support and seemed a little uncomfortable. O'Driscoll came out and waited on the sideline for the rest of the half but Rashford needed no treatment.

He was overtaken in terms of speed in a number of races with Walker in the second half, including the duel in which Erik ten Hag was adamant that a United free-kick should have been awarded. City went up the other end and scored through Foden.

A sign that Rashford was not fully fit came when he was substituted for Antony in the 75th minute.

Is Phil Foden a real goalscorer now?

Three years ago, Guardiola was asked how many goals Foden could score if he improved his composure. “A lot,” he replied. “Sometimes the last part of the last action is a bit… But that's normal at his age. He'll get it, no doubt. I know we can trust and rely on him at all times.”

And you know what, that serenity hasn't quite arrived yet. Think about his performance in the first half or the one-on-one against Brentford at the Etihad a few weeks ago and even the poor finish after a brilliant goal. When he runs in the Champions League final you realize that he can still reach levels.

1709500894 771 Manchester City 3 1 Manchester United Rashford39s rocket Foden the goalscorer

That means: imagine when he gets there. The development over the last three years has been exactly as Guardiola had hoped and expected and this season he is emerging as City's main man. His second goal on Sunday, especially so soon after a superb hat-trick at Brentford, shows he is really getting there on the composure front. Over the years he has missed some opportunities from that perspective, but his team needed him to get that chance and he did it. Add that to the earlier shout and you get a “world class” player, as Guardiola called him last weekend.

Eighteen goals this season show the direction he is heading.

Sam Lee

In praise of the screamers

At a time when some football fans fear that the emphasis on 'expected goals' is taking the long-distance lightning out of the game, here we were treated to two spectacular tries that contradicted the statistics.

Both goals from local academy players were exceptional strikes – Rashford's opener hit the crossbar and bounced into the goal, and Foden's equalizer landed straight into the top corner.

Of the 30 shots in the game, these attempts were effectively the two with the lowest xG value. A shot from the position where Rashford hit the ball had a three percent chance of hitting the net, and Foden's attempt had just a two percent chance. Only Kyle Walker's long-range attempt, which hit Andre Onana directly with 20 minutes left, was equally speculative – another three percent shot.

On the other hand, Haaland managed to convert a 90 percent chance over the bar and Rashford's other attempt was a 0.18xG chance that he couldn't reach at all and fell over after his aerial blast. Sometimes football can be wonderfully unpredictable.

Michael Cox

How did Jonny Evans fare in his first away derby since 2012?

The last time Evans appeared in a game for United at the Etihad was the game in which Robin van Persie scored the injury-time winner under Sir Alex Ferguson in December 2012. More than 12 years later and at the age of 36, Evans returned to the starting lineup. He had only returned to United in the summer after leaving Leicester to stay fit with the under-21s, but here he was asked to cap Haaland, a player 13 years his junior. Although Evans is an accomplished player, his selection says a lot about United's injuries and squad construction.

Last summer, Ten Hag realized Evans could provide United with a reliable option in defense this season and pushed for a one-year deal, but he would not have expected to use the centre-back in such a situation. Evans also started in the derby at Old Trafford in October.

Evans did a lot of good work as City dominated possession. At some point he lived up to his nickname “Belfast Beckenbauer”, intercepted the ball, weaved past his man and then stormed upfield with a menacing move.

At the other end of the spectrum was Kobbie Mainoo, who played his first Manchester derby at the age of 18. He was only seven years old when he played against Van Persie.

Mainoo also showed impressive moments, notably diving to intercept during a pass from City pressure and getting past Kevin De Bruyne so he was pulled back and won a free kick. Mainoo also made a great pass for Alejandro Garnacho, with Ederson timing his intervention just right. But ultimately United were beaten by the better team.

Laurie Whitwell

How important was this win for City?

City had to win this game. As if the pre-derby jitters weren't bad enough for most fans who cared little for pre-match predictions of a win, Liverpool's last-minute winner on Saturday made victory even more important.

Liverpool's win in Nottingham gave the feeling that something had changed and while City have even closer title fights behind them, you know it all depends on what Guardiola's men do. However, an energizing victory for Jurgen Klopp's men is never welcome.

And for those who didn't know, City travel to Anfield next Sunday. So, yeah, that was pretty important and the comeback nature of the proceedings makes it all the sweeter for Guardiola's champions/challengers.

What was the reaction?

Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag defended his safety-first tactics and stressed his side were unlucky not to get a foul on Marcus Rashford in the build-up to City's equalizer.

“I looked back and asked Rashy (Rashford) if there was contact, maybe gentle, but there was contact,” he told the BBC. “I think it was a good performance overall. We took a 1-0 lead and then had the chance to score the second goal.

“We defended very well and there were two crucial moments where we almost made the breakthrough and conceded the first goal. Then you are disappointed, we have to accept that. We closed the middle very well and the box very well. We stuck to the plan.”

“We call Phil 'the sniper' because he likes to shoot,” Walker told British broadcaster Sky Sports. “When he comes into the game with his left foot, you know he has the quality and composure to find his place. He recorded his goals fantastically.

“This season Phil was simply first class. That is the demand he places on himself. That is the demand that the manager places on him. He has to keep it that way now.

“We rely on him and need important players. He practices and puts in a lot of work. His goals come and he reaps the rewards.”
