World Diving Championships: Just missed three podium places

(Sportcom) – The Montreal crowd was anything but quiet Saturday afternoon as the six Canadians took to the 10-meter platform and 3-meter diving board at Montreal's Olympic Park swimming pool for the Coupe du Diving World.

Carried away by the crowd's energy, Nathan Zsombor-Murray finished fourth in the men's 10m final, nearly 20 points behind the bronze medalist. The Pointe Claire athlete got off to a great start, scoring scores of 9 and 9.5 on his first visit to the Tower. After the second round he remained above the 8 mark, which even gave him first place in the preliminary ranking with 10 points ahead of the Mexican Randal Willars Valdez, the eventual silver medalist with 530.90 points.

“If we stop after the second dive, yes, I believed in the gold medal. However, it's never over until it's over, so I knew if I wanted to stay there I had to get four more good jumps,” said Zsombor-Murray, who finished ninth in the same event at the World Championships three weeks earlier took , with a score of 452.25 points.

Relaxed and confident, Zsombor-Murray managed to stay in the top 3 of the preliminary rankings until the fourth round. The stress showed on the fifth dive when the athlete came out of his rotations a little late, earning him scores of 6 and 6.5, temporarily dropping him to fifth place.

“My jump was really good. I jumped hard but didn't adjust the opening, as if I knew the top was good. I just opened normally, but because the top was better, I didn’t adjust it properly.”

If he wanted to secure a spot on the podium, the Pointe Claire athlete couldn't make a mistake. Zsombor-Murray completed the event in good style with a total of 496.10 points, but fell short of China's Lian Junjie (514.65), bronze medalist. His compatriot Yang Hao (533.00) was at the top of the podium.

Quebec's partner in the synchronized competition, Rylan Wiens of Saskatchewan (479.35), placed sixth in the event.

“I feel good. Tomorrow it's about synchronization and usually we end with the individual, although it will be different. We'll see how I dose my energy because usually I give everything to the individual. At least I hope we do Have fun,” concluded Zsombor-Murray.

Earlier this Saturday, the duo of Caeli McKay and Kate Miller had nearly reached the third step of the podium in the women's synchronized 10-meter dash.

The Canadian women, who qualified for the Paris Olympics in Doha last month, were provisionally in second place after their third jump, but it wasn't until the fourth round that everything was decided and they failed to maintain the pace.

“I did some things on this dive that I'm proud of, but I came up short and didn't get into the water well, so it's a little frustrating. “There's been a lot of progress since we started diving together, so despite everything, I'm still proud,” McKay said.

With just under a year of experience together, McKay and Miller had no fear. They were the only ones to complete a dive with a difficulty level of 3.3. The maneuver wasn't entirely successful, so they slipped to fifth place, only to move up to fourth place on the final dive.

“I am confident that our team can move forward, especially with Caeli, who is very experienced at my side. Maybe the fourth dive today wasn't the best, but I know what she's capable of and I know I can trust her. At the next competition we will show everyone what we are capable of,” said Kate Miller of Ontario.

The gold-decorated Chinese Yuxi Chen and Hongchan Quan clearly dominated the competition from the first round with a total score of 368.82. Great Britain, represented by Andrea Spendolini Sirieix and Lois Toulson, took silver with 301.14 points, just ahead of Mexico's Gabriela Agundez Garcia and Alejandra Orozco Loza, who completed the top three with 297.84 points.

Pamela Ware smiles again

The women's 3-meter final with Quebec's Pamela Ware was certainly one of the most anticipated moments of the weekend. With a total score of 339.75 and a smile on his face, Ware finished visibly happy and relieved in fifth place in front of the Montreal crowd.

“My goal this week was really to have fun and I think that showed in my jump today,” the 31-year-old athlete revealed.

The talk about her was that three weeks earlier, at the World Aquatic Swimming Championships in Doha, she was unable to perform her take-off jump in the final of the synchronized competition with her teammate Mia Vallée.

When the Canadian duo finished 15th in the Qatari capital, their Olympic passport eluded them in the event.

“I'm very happy! After having a pretty difficult competition in Doha, I worked very hard not to fall into the same hole as in Tokyo. I didn't have a year to prepare, I had two weeks, “So I think it's a big burden that's off my shoulders today,” said the two-time Olympic champion.

From the start this Saturday, the Greenfield Park diver confidently performed a two-and-a-half back pike that had the judges' scores fluctuating between 7.5 and 8, which she was able to maintain throughout the five rounds. On her last dive, which she missed in Qatar, she was even able to cause a surprise.

Ware completely mastered his take-off jump and achieved a score of 73.50, his best score in the final. Her result put her provisionally on the podium before she was overtaken by China's Yiwen Chen (395.60), American Sarah Bacon (356.40) and fellow Chinese Yani Chang (344.40).

“It's not the diving that stresses me out, it's the jump call. I've been doing the same dives for 15 years and I know how to do them. I'm less stable on the take-off jump, but I'm working hard to make it as stable as it already was,” continued the woman who stood on the second step of the podium at this event in Montreal last year.

With the pressure now eased, Ware ended the interview by telling reporters that she would not take part in the second stage of the World Cup, which will be held in Germany, or the third, which will be held in China. She will need the next 10 weeks to train properly for the Olympic Trials, which take place in Windsor from May 17-19.

On Sunday, Nathan Zsombor-Murray and Rylan Wiens will be back in action in the men's 10-meter synchronized event. Cédric Fofana will be the Canadian representative in the men's 3m final.

Her teammate Caeli McKay will be in action in the women's 10-meter final.

A first in the history of CF Montreal

A first in the history of CF Montreal

On Saturday it was the first night for CF Montreal against FC Dallas.

For the first time in its history, Bleu-Blanc-Noir won at Toyota Stadium in Frisco. The Belle Province club triumphed with a score of 2 to 1, earning their first win of 2024.

Prior to today's clash, CF Montreal had a 0-4-1 record against FC Dallas on home soil.

It was striker Josef Martinez's first goal in the Montreal team's jersey that tipped the scales in favor of the guests. In the 60th minute, the 30-year-old Venezuelan broke away from his decker deep in the penalty area and received the baton from Ruan. He then skillfully pushed the ball between the legs of goalkeeper Maarten Paes.

CF Montreal also scored the first goal of this duel. Jules-Anthony Vilsaint went there in the 20th minute with a powerful right-footed shot from near the ground. The ball found its way and moved the strings. For the native of the Quebec metropolis, it was his second career goal in Major League Soccer (MLS).

FC Dallas responded in stoppage time in the first half. Striker Petar Musa completed a nice build-up from his teammates and put the ball past goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois. However, the official needed the video recording before awarding the goal to the man, who was playing his first game in the MLS after a €9 million (just over $13 million) transfer.

Sirois also finished his match with six saves.

CF Montreal will play its third game of the season against Lionnel Messi and Inter Miami at Lockhart Stadium on Sunday, March 10.

Caitlin Clark breaks Pete Maravich's scoring record. What now for the Iowa star?

Caitlin Clark is now the all-time leading scorer in college basketball history. So how can things continue? Lindsay Schnell of USA TODAY Sports explains.

With her favorite player and another great women's scorer watching, Caitlin Clark became the leading scorer in NCAA Division I basketball on Sunday over Ohio State.

The record was expected – Clark started the game just 18 points behind Pete Maravich – but it still caused a celebration. When Clark hit two free throws with 0.3 seconds left in the first half, Iowa fans went wild. Also in the audience were former WNBA MVP Maya Moore, Clark's childhood idol, and Lynette Woodard, previously the leading scorer in women's basketball history.

It was a fitting moment for the homegrown superstar, who said earlier this week that this would be her final college season and she would enter the 2024 WNBA Draft.

Maravich scored 3,667 points at LSU from 1967 to 1970, before freshmen were eligible and the 3-point limit existed. His record has stood for more than five decades (although Antoine Davis nearly surpassed that record when he scored 3,664 points for Detroit Mercy from 2018 to 2023). While some have argued that we shouldn't compare Clark and Maravich because they played in such different eras, there's no question that it's a milestone that deserves recognition.

And she's not finished yet. Clark will continue to add to her career scoring total as Iowa enters the postseason. The Hawkeyes have a bye to the Big Ten quarterfinals and will play their first game of the conference tournament on Friday. After successfully completing the conference tournament, Iowa will host the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament as a top-four seed.

It's entirely possible that Clark, one of the most prolific scorers in basketball history, ends up setting a record that may never be broken.

Well, that was disappointing.

Instead of breaking Maravich's all-time scoring record with a three-pointer, as she did when she passed Kelsey Plum, Clark did it with a free throw with less than a second left in the first half.

Ohio State's Cotie McMahon had easily passed Clark, but Clark did her best to imitate Cristiano Ronaldo and McMahon was hit by a technical error. Clark made the first free throw to tie Maravich, then the second to secure the record.

When the halftime buzzer sounded, Clark's teammates jumped up and down and the crowd went wild.

“Not really,” Clark told Fox’s Allison Williams at halftime. “But when they announced it and everyone was screaming, I knew it. Pretty cool.” – Nancy Armor

After Molly Davis played a great defensive game and released the ball, she lies on the ground.

Davis fell awkwardly as she stepped in front of an Ohio State pass and immediately grabbed her right knee. When she replayed it, it looked like she had severely twisted her right ankle. She is clearly in a lot of pain and Iowa staff had to carry her off the ground.

As the crowd chanted her name, Davis gave a thumbs up as she walked back into the tunnel and into the training room. Iowa had a 36-26 lead when Davis went down.

My goodness, Iowa plays well at home.

A 17-3 run midway through the first quarter helped the Hawkeyes take a lead of as many as 15 points. Part of that success came from Iowa thoroughly beating Ohio State's vaunted press. Iowa already has a 7-2 advantage in fast break points and Clark already has five assists (and just one turnover).

Meanwhile, after two 3s in the first quarter, Clark is now just 12 points away from overtaking Maravich.

Ohio State seems to be calming down a bit. Jacy Sheldon already has nine points, but if the Buckeyes want to get another win over Iowa, Cotie McMahon, who currently has just two points, will have to step up offensively.

Clark's scoring prowess draws attention, but I assure you her court vision and passing are just as lethal. She had just three points but five assists in the first seven minutes of the game, including a nifty pass through traffic to Hannah Stuelke. Stuelke fouled on the layup and made the free throw to convert the three-point play and give Iowa a 22-10 lead.

FOX Sports analyst Sara Kustok said it best: “This building could explode.”

It's LOUD in Carver-Hawkeye Arena and the Buckeyes seem unsettled by it. Clark has scored just three points so far and made just one of four scoring attempts, but Iowa, a team not known for its defense, has already forced Ohio State into three turnovers.

And while Clark may not be shooting particularly well to begin with, her team came to play and scored on 4 of 6 attempts. Overall, Iowa is shooting 50% from the field. This is a good opportunity to take revenge for one of the worst defeats of the season.

Here's how to watch Iowa vs. Ohio State

No. 2 Ohio State and No. 6 Iowa can be seen nationally on Fox and can be streamed on the Fox Sports app. The game can also be found on Fubo. For Fox, Gus Johnson will join the play-by-play show alongside analyst Sarah Kustok. Allison Williams takes on additional work.

Caitlin Clark got the ultimate surprise on Senior Day – a visit from her favorite player.

Anyone who has spoken to Clark knows that as a young girl she quite idolized Maya Moore, the former WNBA MVP who led the Minnesota Lynx to four WNBA titles during her eight-year career. Clark's father, Brent, made the 3.5-hour drive from their home in Des Moines to Minneapolis to watch Moore, and once after a game, Caitlin ran onto the floor to hug Moore. Caitlin said of meeting her idol: “Ten seconds can make a big difference in someone’s life.”

On Sunday morning, however, she was well over 10 seconds ahead.

Clark was standing outside the Iowa locker room after the shooting and was being interviewed when Moore walked onto the scene. Clark screamed in excitement and hugged her hero again.

“I feel like I’m a fangirl,” said Clark, clearly overwhelmed with emotion. It was a pure, joyful moment.

Earlier this season, USA TODAY Sports spoke with Moore, who praised Clark's performance in the NCAA Tournament and said that an athlete who is able to thrive when the lights are brightest, “that's the sign that someone is the right person.” – Lindsay Schnell

If women's basketball fans and advocates want to be honest about why the Caitlin Clark phenomenon is breaking through in a way that superstars in earlier eras of their sport did not, they must acknowledge an insignificant but crucial factor in their popularity.

While grievances in sports are a powerful tool and have long been necessary to advance equality and create opportunities for women, Clark has never presented himself as the face of a larger cause. Part of her appeal to fans who have either ignored or mocked women's basketball in the past — mostly men, of course — is that they are not ashamed to pay attention to it. Her charisma and style stand for themselves.

And as this weekend approaches and the Clark narrative now turns to the 3,667-point mark that has always been associated with Pete Maravich, her achievements should remain right there.

Alone.

Just like Pistol Pete.

The record and the numbers behind it really don't matter.

How many points does Caitlin Clark have at the end of this season, how many more points is that than Pete Maravich – they all become footnotes at some point. Future answers to quiz questions.

What matters is how Clark's assault on the record books captivated the country and reflects a seismic shift in the view of women's sports and the athletes who play them.

Can anyone question Caitlin Clark's NCAA scoring record?

Kelsey Plum's record stood for seven years. Iowa coach Lisa Bluder believes Clark's could last longer.

“This record will stand for a long time and I’m just glad she’s wearing the black and gold,” Bluder said.

Bluder also said she thought it was great that Clark set the record with a Logo 3, the shot that has become her trademark.

“You do it, you do it good, girl,” Bluder said. – Nancy Armor

Clark enters Sunday's game with 3,650 career points, just 18 shy of passing Pete Maravich on the all-time scoring list. She is averaging 32.1 points per game this season with one regular-season game, Big Ten and NCAA Tournament games remaining.

Clark's highest-scoring game was also her record-setting performance on February 15 against Michigan in the 2023-24 season, when she scored 49 points. Clark shot 16 of 31 in the game, including 9 of 18 from 3. She also grabbed five rebounds and dished out 13 assists in the 106-89 win.

Sheryl Swoopes speaks to Caitlin Clark after viral comments

After making a controversial dig at Caitlin Clark as she neared the all-time NCAA women's scoring record, Sheryl Swoopes said she spoke to the Iowa star about her comments, thanks to LSU's Angel Reese.

The three-time WNBA Most Valuable Player appeared on the broadcast of the Baylor-Texas Tech game on Sunday, where she said Reese helped facilitate a conversation between her and Clark.

“A few weeks ago I contacted Angel and had a really good conversation with Angel on the phone and sent a message to Caitlin. She replied. She and I went back and forth,” Swoopes said. “I won’t.” Share what she said. I'll leave that up to her if she wants to share it. But I have to say what I said to her was, “I made a mistake when I said it was your fifth year even though it's your fourth.” ” – Jordan Mendoza

Clark is 1.80 m tall. Tall guards have become more and more common in women's basketball over the last decade, and Clark's size absolutely helps her because she is able to see past defenders on the kickoff and helps her gain vertical separation when taking a shot executes.

Also of note: Clark, who is fairly skinny, worked hard to put on eight pounds of muscle last summer, and that has made a big difference in her game, especially when driving to the rim.

By now you've probably heard that Iowa All-American Caitlin Clark, the reigning National Player of the Year, tends to sell out every arena she plays in. But taking a closer look at #Clarkonomics — as ESPN analyst Debbie Antonelli called it — USA TODAY reporter Jim Sergent put together a vivid overview of how much Iowa fans will spend and how far they will travel to see Clark in person see. The numbers are telling to say the least.

WNBA legend Sue Bird: Caitlin Clark will have early success in the league

Four-time WNBA champion Sue Bird believes Caitlin Clark's play will have a good impact on the WNBA.

“I do think she has a chance to be great,” Bird said during an appearance on “The Sports Media Podcast” with Richard Deitsch, which airs in full on Thursday.

Bird credits the Iowa star's reach as a key weapon in her success. (After all, Clark broke the all-women's NCAA scoring record last week with a 35-foot logo shot.) “I think a lot of it is due to her shooting from long range. This is your separator. You are.” “I'm not really used to guarding people out there,” Bird explained. – Cydney Henderson

“I am very happy” – Martin St-Louis

For the second time in two games, the Montreal Canadiens lost their flag in a 4-3 shootout to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night.

But once again head coach Martin St-Louis was happy with his men.

“I'm very happy,” he told the media without hesitation after his team's setback. We played a good game, I liked our fighting spirit. We were well organized, physical and alert. It was a good game.”

But what can we do to turn these defeats into victories?

“It is [quelque chose qui va se faire] “Little by little,” replied St-Louis. We must move on and learn from our mistakes. We don't play against easy teams. We played well enough to win, but we lost. The players are not frustrated, they are disappointed.

A good excursion from Primeau

Goalkeeper Cayden Primeau did well under the circumstances, he who doesn't see much action these days.

According to his own statements, he would like to go to the net more often, but tries to make the most of every start.

“He played really well,” St-Louis admitted. Even though he doesn't have the net as often as he would like, he controls what he can and tonight he was ready. He gave us a chance [de l’emporter].”

Caitlin Clark is ready to celebrate Iowa's Senior Day by breaking Pete Maravich's NCAA scoring record

The stage is set for Caitlin Clark to be crowned NCAA Division I's all-time leading scorer when sixth-seeded Iowa closes the regular season against second-seeded Ohio State on Sunday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Four days after breaking Lynette Woodard's all-time collegiate women's record, Clark would surpass Pete Maravich's point total of 3,617 points when she scores 18 points against the Buckeyes.

Woodard was among those in attendance at Carver-Hawkeye Arena to support Clark in celebrating Senior Day. Also in attendance were basketball great Maya Moore, who was Clark's favorite player, and Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan.

On Thursday, Clark announced she would enter the 2024 WNBA Draft, skipping the fifth year of eligibility for athletes who competed during the COVID-19 pandemic. She is projected to be the No. 1 overall pick by the Indiana Fever, and the WNBA is already seeing an increase in ticket sales.

Logitix, which studies prices on ticket resale platforms, reported an average selling price of $598 for a ticket for this game purchased since February 1.

“Listen, this is the biggest ticket in the world right now,” Woodard said in a pregame interview with ESPN. “Hey, I’m going to enjoy this now.”

Clark is almost certain to make one or two more appearances at the Iowa City Arena after Sunday. Iowa is projected to be the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, meaning it will be at home in the first two rounds.

Francis Marion's Pearl Moore holds the all-time women's record at the AIAW's small college level with 4,061 points from 1975 to 1979. Moore had 177 points at Anderson Junior College before enrolling at Francis Marion.

Clark trails Moore by 411 points and has just three to 10 games left in an Iowa uniform, depending on how far the Hawkeyes advance in the Big Ten and NCAA tournaments.

When Clark overtakes Maravich, performance will be put to the test.

Maravich's all-time record is one of the most remarkable in sports history: it was set in just 83 games over three seasons from 1967 to 1970. Back then there was no shot clock or 3-point line. The 3-point line was introduced in 1986.

Maravich averaged 44.2 points per game. He scored more than 60 points in a game four times, scoring 69 points on February 7, 1970 against Alabama.

Clark is averaging 28.3 points for her career and will play her 130th game on Sunday. Her career-best performance was 49 points against Michigan on Feb. 15, when she passed Kelsey Plum for the NCAA women's Division I scoring leader.

Clark has 54 games with at least 30 points, the most of any player in men's or women's college basketball in the last 25 years. She has six triple-doubles this season and 17 in her career.

With Clark as the headliner, Iowa has helped 30 of 32 games this season sell out or break attendance records. The only two games that didn't happen were at a Thanksgiving tournament in Florida.

“She’s just a phenomenal, phenomenal player who helped change the women’s game,” Michigan coach Kim Barnes Arico said. “She helped bring an enormous amount of light, respect and spectators to women’s football. She's gorgeous. She’s a competitor.”

“You either love her or you hate her, but usually you hate her because she competes so hard. I have a lot of respect for someone who is so competitive and has never hit a shot she didn’t like.”

“He is the only person I knew with whom you could have a discussion about yesterday's hockey results in one second and then have a spirited debate about the importance of turning the clock back to November and bringing it forward to March. “

DC United's young squad is already showing a lot of determination

PORTLAND, Ore. — It's still early, two weekends into a 34-game campaign that will soon leave winter behind and consume the spring and summer before moving into fall. When MLS gets into full swing, DC United's early performances under its ambitious, young coach will be a distant memory.

But these early returns — which included a two-goal second-half comeback that led to a 2-2 draw against the Portland Timbers on Saturday — are a good sign for a team and a struggling fan base that has been struggling for years didn't have much to celebrate anymore.

United (1-0-1) plays proactive, high-energy football under first-year coach Troy Lesesne, and although top-scoring player Christian Benteke failed in the last minute and the deficit doubled early in the second half, the visitors hung on to the plan.

Some chances were wasted, others were thwarted by Portland goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau. United's persistence was rewarded with Mateusz Klich's 72nd-minute penalty and teenager Kristian Fletcher's equalizer ten minutes later.

“Even if we are down 0-0, you can see that we are moving the game forward,” said Lesesne. “When we’re 2-0 down, we push the game forward. We're down 2-1, we're pushing the game forward. You can say “relentless” is one of your values, but that’s the action behind it. This is what being a relentless team should look like.”

Lesesne and the players said they probably deserved more than a point.

“We could have won the game. “We should have won the game,” said Klich. “We were the better team. We had better chances.”

United showed strong determination against a Portland team (1-0-1) that had scored six goals in the first 151 minutes of the season, including four in the opener against Colorado.

“It would have been easy to get everything under control and prevent it from getting any worse,” said goalkeeper Alex Bono, who made an excellent save. “But we achieved that one goal and then we felt that the dynamic had really changed. There were moments after the equalizer when we could have found a winner. We had a really great, mature performance.”

Evidence of maturity came from a late-stage group that included three locally trained young players: Fletcher, an 18-year-old Bowie replacement; Jackson Hopkins, a 19-year-old reserve from Stafford; and Ted Ku-DiPietro, a 22-year-old starter from Oakton.

The finishing unit also included new additions Christopher McVey, Lucas Bartlett, Aaron Herrera in defense and Matti Peltola in defensive midfield. Returning striker Cristian Dájome replaced Benteke, who sustained a groin injury during pre-match warm-ups. “I hope it stays like this from week to week,” said Lesesne of Benteke’s injury.

Herrera created several opportunities on the right. On the equalizer, his low cross flew out of Crépeau's reach and hit Fletcher on the back, giving him an easy finish and his second league goal of his career.

“Perfect ball from Aaron,” said Fletcher. “I just had to be there.”

Unhappy with the game's draw, United continued to take the game to the Timbers.

After United equalized, “Klich pushed us back up [to restart the game] because we knew we had the momentum,” Herrera said.

Lesesne said his team “has proven something to ourselves about the type of character we want to portray.”

Still, “no one is really happy,” he added. “And that’s a good thing because we need to get a head start on what we want to do and not settle for the point where the performance would probably be more deserving of the three points.”

The players praised Lesesne for instilling an aggressive mentality.

“You get this relentless attitude from him, and that’s passed on to us,” Bono said. “No matter what situation we find ourselves in, no matter what the score is, there is always something to play for.”

Fletcher added: “We all bought into it.”

Klich said: “You can see the positive mood in the club. We can’t wait for the next game” next Sunday in Cincinnati.

United still have a few things to clean up. Although the chances to score were well created, the shooting was messy. Passive defending led to Portland's first goal when Santiago Moreno strolled free on the right side and Dairon Asprilla got into position for a 10-yard shot.

For Portland's second goal, Moreno took a stray cross to the back and slotted the ball past the advancing Bono.

The Timbers Army – the green-clad fanatics behind the north gate – celebrated and Timber Joey, the lumberjack mascot, spun his chainsaw.

United were unimpressed. “We didn’t have any doubts for a second that we could turn the game around,” said Fletcher.

Last year United didn't record a two-goal comeback.

“There are a million excuses we could have used and we didn’t use a single one,” Bono said. “We knew Christian would be out and decided nothing would change: the same game plan, the same aggression, the same style.”
