Alcaraz and Medvedev come full circle but Djokovic still looks immobile – The Guardian

Wimbledon 2023

The Spaniards and Russians renew their rivalry knowing that the defending champions should be waiting for them in the Wimbledon final

Thu 13 Jul 2023 at 7pm BST

It’s been two years since Carlos Alcaraz took his first tentative steps onto the pitch of the All England Club as a professional. He was 18 at the time and while he couldn’t jump straight into the tournament with his rankings, the promise he had shown on his early trips to the Australian Open and French Open had landed him a wild card into the main draw at Wimbledon .

In his first professional game on grass, he narrowly survived the lucky loser Yasutaka Uchiyama. Two days later Alcaraz met Daniil Medvedev.

Wimbledon revels in the past, but Alcaraz and Rune show a bright future | Barney Ronay

“He was much less mature and younger, which is normal,” the Russian said on Wednesday. “He was missed. Everyone saw that he was great, but everyone was wondering if he’ll find a way to miss less [while] produce the same performance. And he did it pretty quickly. That’s the amazing thing.”

Their fight ended in an easy 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 victory for the Russian. The circle closes with the semifinals on Friday. After storming up the rankings, establishing himself as a Grand Slam champion and current world No. 1, Alcaraz will face Medvedev, third seed, in his first Wimbledon final.

The confidence that has driven Alcaraz on and off the pitch since his appearance is clearly evident. He has achieved such great success in such a short space of time, breaking age records and outpacing his rivals, and his goals have changed as a result. His goal was once to win Grand Slam titles and reach world No. 1; Now he wants to be one of the greatest in the history of his sport.

Still, that run and its pace, from winning Queen’s to racing through five straight games at Wimbledon, surprised even the 20-year-old. The speed of his adaptation further underlines his skill and his ability to master a game so diverse that it can adapt to all substrates. He’s shown that the hype that follows him, deafening as it is, does so with good reason.

The pair have only played once since that first meeting, this year in the Indian Wells final. That game was one of Alcaraz’s most notable performances to date, as he demolished his opponent, brimming with confidence in a 19-game winning streak, 6-3, 6-2. Medvedev insists the grass will offer a completely different game.

“I don’t think Indian Wells will count for much here,” Medvedev said. “Slow down, Indian Wells. I mean it won’t be the same. Wimbledon, the ball bounces lower. The serve is more important. I had the feeling that I couldn’t get any more free points with the serve.”

The surface will certainly allow Medvedev to get more out of his serve and he’s been hitting exceptionally well at times this week. His own progress on both grass and clay has been deeply impressive. But at Indian Wells, Alcaraz dismantled Medvedev’s signature deep-return stance and field positioning with a frenzy of serve and volley attempts, net jabs, drop shots and unrelenting aggression. Such an approach is only deadlier on grass.

The pair will battle knowing they could potentially play for a spot against second seed Novak Djokovic. After 11 days of tennis nothing has changed. The defending champion and seven-time winner remains the clear favorite even in the toughest group of challengers he could face in the later rounds.

quick start Guide

Skupski and Koolhof reach the men’s doubles final

In recent years, Neal Skupski has made a name for himself as a specialist in mixed doubles, winning the title here in 2021 and 2022 alongside Desirae Krawczyk of the United States. What he wants now is to secure the men’s title and on Thursday he was one win away as he and Wesley Koolhof, his Dutch partner Matt Ebden, one half of last year’s winning duo, and Rohan Bopanna defeated India 7 -5, 6-4. The top seeds will face Spain’s Marcel Granollers and Argentina’s Horacio Zeballos in the final.

Skupski is the first Briton to reach a final at Wimbledon, excluding wheelchair users, in three consecutive years since Dorothy Round in 1937. “It’s always nice to have a Brit with us at the end of the tournament at Wimbledon,” he said. “I’ve been lucky with mixed doubles in recent years. But that’s what we want. That’s what we trained for. For me, that’s the highest achievement when we’ve managed to cross the finish line. But we still have a tough game ahead of us.”

As for streaks, this one will take a beating. Britain’s men’s wheelchair doubles duo Alfie Hewitt and Gordon Reid duly reached their 16th consecutive Grand Slam final together on Thursday by defeating Argentina’s Gustavo Fernández and Spain’s Martín de la Puente 7-5, 6-3.

Another example of why they’ve established themselves as the best doubles pair in the world – in every discipline – the No. 1 seeded won a narrow first set and then effortlessly progressed through the second to leave them just one win from their fifth Wimbledon together -Titles are removed. In the final they play against the Japanese Takuya Miki and Tokito Oda. Simon Cambers

Despite his lack of experience on grass, Jannik Sinner – who will face Djokovic in the semifinals – has grown on the surface and reached the quarterfinals for the first time last year. His destructive, clean and perfectly timed groundstrokes, unrelenting aggression and love of pace are naturally rewarded on turf.

In that quarterfinal last year, Sinner played the best tennis of his life, leading by two sets, but Djokovic turned the game around and won in five sets. The Italian has the weapons to pummel Djokovic and make him uncomfortable, but the ease with which the 36-year-old recovered was in some ways even more disheartening than a straight-set loss.

Despite finally reaching the long-awaited first Grand Slam semi-final this week, Sinner did so with an amazingly easy draw. He has yet to play a top 50 player; his highest-ranked opponent in the third round was No. 79 Quentin Halys, who snatched a set from him. Now the 21-year-old must face the best player in the world at a place he hasn’t lost in a decade.

Bruins alum shoots an arrow at Jim Montgomery

The Boston Bruins’ unexpected elimination in the first round of the playoffs left an indelible mark on an exceptional season. Veteran Nick Foligno is among those who will have bad memories from this episode.

In fact, the Chicago Blackhawks rookie wasn’t even on the ice when the Florida Panthers clinched a crucial 4-3 overtime win in Game 7. Instead, Foligno took his seat in the press box, having been ruled out by head coach Jim Montgomery.

“It’s something you don’t prepare for,” he recently told the media. I mean… “Monty” and I had talked about it – and I’ll keep it a secret – but I really didn’t like it. I think he knows. If you’re a competitor, this is the time of year you want to play. It hasn’t worked for me and never will.

At 35, the American has been through a lot and still has three points in six games in these playoffs. According to the main prospect, giving up the experience of this striker was a questionable decision by Montgomery.

“It was hard to see the team play and it’s keen to be a part of it. “It was one of those double-or-nothing games that you dream about and expect to play on the ice,” the former Columbus Blue Jackets captain continued. It’s unfortunate, but I’m happy with it now after talking to “Monty” about it. We moved on, but I hope that never happens again.

heartbreaker

After the Bruins’ 65 wins in the regular season, most observers expected them to easily defeat the Panthers. They had three chances to end the transmissions, but to no avail.

“Ultimately, we didn’t finish the job,” said Foligno. It’s heartbreaking because it’s probably the best team I’ve ever played with, even the best ever. I give [au directeur général Don Sweeney] a lot of credit. We had one of the best teams you’ll see anytime soon. [par] how it was put together. Our depth and the look of our group… we had no weaknesses and it’s amazing that we failed.”

After 1,081 games in his career and another 68 in the playoffs, Foligno is still looking for his first Stanley Cup. With a rebuilding team like the Blackhawks and only a one-year contract under his belt, he could continue to endure his troubles patiently.

Canchita Gonzales and his emphatic response to Flores after reaffirming

Speaking to the Peruvian press, Christofer Gonzáles made the comments while on vacation in Peru after ending the season with his club Al-Adalah, who were relegated to the Saudi Arabian league. Canchita spoke again about Edison Flores’ statements, who questioned that the midfielder is now a Sporting Cristal fan and has forgotten his Universitario de Deportes past.

Let’s recall that the ‘U’ midfielder was upset when he learned that the former Sky Blue player now identifies with the Rimac side. “It’s from the ‘U’! I don’t know what happened to him,” he said days ago. After that, the Peruvian, who plays Arab football, replied once again to his former teammate and clarified if there was a possibility that they would play together again at Ate club.

“Yes, I have already answered him. Someday we will face each other. Difficult (that we play together). It’s a bit complicated,” he said in an interview for Best Cable.

Christofer Gonzáles hasn’t defined his future yet: can he return to Cristal?

Christofer Gonzáles needs to clarify his future as soon as possible as Al-Adalah moved to Saudi Arabia’s second tier and would move to another club to remain in the top flight. The soccer player admitted that Sporting Cristal would take precedence over other teams on his return to Peruvian football.

“Sporting Cristal is a priority. Universitario and Melgar are teams I’ve played for and I thank them very much for the love, time and good things I’ve had, but as I said at one point I’ve had very wonderful and very beautiful moments in Cristal . Let’s hope that this possibility can be given at some point,” he said in dialogue with GolPerú.

Pulisic “accepts” AC Milan’s challenge and bemoans lack of chances at Chelsea

Christian Pulisic says he is “looking forward to a new challenge” at AC Milan after closing a chapter with Chelsea.

AC Milan have completed the signing of USA striker Christian Pulisic from Chelsea, the Serie A club announced on Thursday.

Facing out competition from Juventus, Lyon and Galatasaray, Milan signed the player after getting closer to Chelsea’s transfer valuation of £20m ($25.9m) last weekend, sources told ESPN.

ESPN reported on June 30 that Pulisic had agreed terms in principle with Milan and was willing to take a significant pay cut to facilitate a move.

Lyon had also made an offer to Chelsea, sources told ESPN, but Pulisic turned down the chance to join the French side, believing it was the wrong move for his career.

Pulisic is the third American to play for Milan, after defenders Oguchi Onyewu and Sergiño Dest, who were on loan from Barcelona to San Siro last season.

“I am very happy to be here. I’m excited. I’m looking forward to starting at this historic club,” Pulisic told reporters waiting for him at Milan’s Malpensa Airport on Wednesday before undergoing his medical. “It’s legendary and I’m really excited to come here and try to win some titles here.”

Milan, owned by American investment firm RedBird Capital Partners, are seven-time European champions and won the last of their 19 Serie A titles in 2022. The Rossoneri lost to city rivals Inter Milan in the Champions League semifinals last season.

The deal ends Pulisic’s time in the Premier League. He joined Chelsea from Borussia Dortmund for €64m in 2018 but has been hampered by injuries.

Pulisic made 145 appearances in four seasons for Chelsea in which he was part of the club’s Champions League-winning side in 2021. He also helped win the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup later that same year.

During that time, Pulisic shone at international level, twice leading the USMNT to victory in the Concacaf Nations League and guiding the team to the round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup.

His tenure at Chelsea has been dwindling as the club signed several attacking players over the past year, including Mykhailo Mudryk, Raheem Sterling and Christopher Nkunku.

Pulisic joins former Chelsea team-mate Ruben Loftus-Cheek at Milan and becomes the 14th senior player to leave Stamford Bridge since the end of last season.

With the departure of Pulisic, Chelsea have now raked in more than £200m ($258.7m) in outgoing transfers this summer.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.

Sources Jets Star DT Quinnen Williams Strike 96M Deal

Sources: Jets, Star DT Quinnen Williams Strike $96M Deal – ESPN – ESPN

Rich CiminiESPN Staff Writer Jul 13, 2023 1:54pm ET4 minutes read

Martin: The Jets should take hard knocks

Kimberley A. Martin discusses why the Jets should be chosen to team up for HBO’s Hard Knocks this season.

FLORHAM PARK, NJ — The New York Jets have signed All-Pro defenseman Quinnen Williams with a four-year, $96 million contract extension that includes a $66 million guarantee, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Thursday .

It’s the largest guarantee in franchise history, surpassing linebacker CJ Mosley’s $51 million as a free agent in 2019.

Williams, 25, who has one year left on his rookie contract, is now under contract through the 2027 season.

Overtime makes Williams the second-highest-paid defensive tackle in the NFL by annual average. At $24 million per season, he surpasses the Tennessee Titans’ Jeffery Simmons ($23.5 million) and ranks second behind Los Angeles Rams star Aaron Donald ($31.7 million).

The Jets now have two of the highest-paid players in their respective positions, Williams and quarterback Aaron Rodgers ($50.3 million averaging), which they acquired in April in a deal with the Green Bay Packers.

Williams skipped the Jets’ voluntary training sessions while the two sides negotiated and more than once took to social media to express frustration when other top defensive tackles received big overtimes. He deleted the Jets from his Twitter bio and changed it to “Defensive tackle for…”. He added the Jets back to his bio on Thursday, just before news of his renewal broke.

This offseason, Simmons, Dexter Lawrence (New York Giants) and Daron Payne (Washington Commanders) all signed new contracts that ranged from $22.5 million to $23.5 million per year. Simmons, Lawrence and Williams were first-round picks in 2019.

The Jets re-signed Williams’ brother, linebacker Quincy Williams, to a three-year, $18 million deal this offseason.

According to a source, Jets officials remained publicly optimistic throughout the process and promised to see it through, even though the sides hadn’t spoken to each other for at least a month in April/May. On June 6, coach Robert Saleh said: “It will be done. He’ll be here for camp, he’ll be ready to go and when he is I’m sure he’ll be the same guy he was a year ago.”

The Jets defense, which ranked fourth last season in yards allowed and points, now has one of its pillars for the foreseeable future.

Aside from the money, the Williams deal is also significant because the Jets aren’t known for keeping their top picks. According to a study by ESPN Stats & Information, they are the only team that didn’t sign any of their first-round players to a second contract from 2012 to 2018. The last to receive an extension was defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson, who was selected in 2011.

This is the first time general manager Joe Douglas, who took over in 2019, has re-signed a Jets draft pick for a multi-year extension. Of the 55 draft picks from 2012 to 2018, only two received multi-year extensions — wide receiver Quincy Enunwa (6th-round pick in 2014) and guard Brian Winters (3rd-round pick in 2013). These extensions existed before Douglas.

After solid years in 2020 and 2021, Williams exploded in 2022 and finished the year with a team-high 12 sacks (third among inside-line men in the NFL). According to NextGen Stats, his pressure percentage (13.4%) was the highest among qualified interior organizers.

Williams reached his first Pro Bowl and was named the first All-Pro team. Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich called it “one of the best defensive performances … I’ve ever seen — and I’ve been with some really, really good players.”

Ulbrich compared Williams to former San Francisco 49ers teammate Bryant Young, a four-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in February.

Williams was drafted third overall in 2019, Mike Maccagnan’s final draft as GM. The former Alabama All-American has 27.5 sacks in 57 games of his career.

“We all love Quinnen,” Douglas said at the end of the season. “He’s 25, he’s had a fantastic season. We still think there is a lot of potential for him. We want Quinnen here.”

Is this the end of the road for Jonathan Toews

Is this the end of the road for Jonathan Toews?

Jonathan Toews is said to be giving serious thought to the rest of his career and a recent decision by the agency representing him appears to see him headed straight for retirement.

Several Chicago media outlets reported that the CAA did not include the 35-year veteran’s name on their list of free agents sent to the National Hockey League (NHL). However, the verdict has not yet been officially announced, but several signs seem to point to the end of the Manitoban’s career.

Toews went on a free transfer on July 1 and the Blackhawks announced in April that they had not offered their captain a contract extension since 2008.

The centre-back has lost significant pace in recent years as part of a faltering formation that has begun to rebuild. At a discount, however, he could be of great use to another team, most notably he is rumored to be joining the Edmonton Oilers.

However, Toews has also been held back this year by the long-term effects of COVID-19, which could affect his decision. He had to draw a line under the entire 2020-2021 season to get better.

After playing his 15 seasons in the NHL with the Blackhawks, he accumulated 883 points in 1,067 games, including 31 points in 53 games last season. Toews is also a three-time Stanley Cup winner.
