2023 Players Championship Leaderboard: Scottie Scheffler takes control with Saturday 65 at TPC Sawgrass – CBS Sports

A grouped leaderboard full of rookies, ex-loan officers, relative unknowns, journeymen and big champions seemed to be turning into a two-man race before Scottie Scheffler took control at the 2023 Players Championship. The Texan emerged from the crowd towards the end of round three and was the only player in the field to complete three straight rounds in the 60s and will go into Sunday with a solo lead of 14-under.

Scheffler will start the final round two shots ahead of world No. 50 Min Woo Lee. The Aussie looked poised to share the 54-hole lead with Scheffler before dropping his only shot of the day to 18. Behind Lee, the rankings start to thin as the world No. 2 finds fourth ahead of another Australian, Cameron Davis, third.

On a day of record-breaking low scores, second ace of the week on the par-3 17, and dropping the course record, Scheffler stood out from the crowd. His 65 cut Lee’s 66 by a shot when it looked like Lee could do no wrong. Scheffler remained patient when he encountered difficulties, seizing his opportunities and playing the winning style of golf on Pete Dye’s masterpiece.

Others will have to do the same on Sunday if they want to keep Scheffler from running away. Several outsiders want to sneak in through the side door, including England’s Tommy Fleetwood and Aaron Rai at 9 under. The two signed for 65s in Round 3 and positioned themselves well should Scheffler falter. Sungjae Im is down at 8 under a shot and is joined by Tom Hoge, who at 62 set the course record on Lap 3 at TPC Sawgrass.

Ranking of the Players Championship 2023

1. Scottie Scheffler (-14): There just can’t be enough nice things to say about Scheffler. He started his third round in an ideal manner, kicking a birdie on #1 and chipping for eagle on #2. He then turned 31 (with a beach ball). His back nine was a lot more mundane with seven pars and two birdies, but that’s what he’ll need on Sunday as the course tightens and the opposition fire on him. A win would see him retake the world No. 1 ranking from Jon Rahm while becoming the only man to hold the Players Championship and Masters simultaneously alongside Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

2.Min Woo Lee (-12): Lee’s only missed putt from 10 feet came on the 18th and it will surely spoil his dinner. Despite the disappointment on the final hole, Lee should be proud of his 66. After taking the lead, the young Australian seemed very comfortable in his position and continued to put pressure on Scheffler behind him. He defeated Matt Fitzpatrick in a playoff in his most recent win at the Scottish Open in 2021 and won’t be afraid to do the same to Scheffler.

3. Cam Davis (-10): The other young Australian appeared at the 2022 Presidents Cup alongside fellow countryman Adam Scott. The big leap forward in his career felt inevitable in 2023, but Davis admitted he faced some health issues earlier in the year. He floated around for most of the third round and started his day with nine straight pars down the front. A back-nine 31, including birdies in places 17-18, put him just behind the two in front.

“I was unwell for the first few months of the year,” Davis said Thursday. “I couldn’t really practice much. I let a few things come to me. … This is the first week that I’ve really felt like I’m getting the hang of it again. Yes, hopefully this is just the beginning for me.”

T4. Aaron Rai, Tommy Fleetwood, Chad Ramey, Christiaan Bezuidenhout (-9): Rai moved to Ponte Vedra Beach just two weeks ago and now has a chance to win the biggest title of his career just around the corner from his home. He had one of the best three-hole finishes in the Players Championship playing the No. 16-18 4-1-3. The Englishman went from 5 under to 9 under in under an hour and catapulted his name into the competition.

T8. Sungjae Im, Tom Hoge, David Lingmerth (-8): Hoge started his week with a 78, fought back with a 68 and broke the course record at TPC Sawgrass on Saturday with a 62. He surpassed a number of players who have shot 63 before, including big champions like Freddie Couples, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Greg Norman. Hoge gained nearly eight shots on the field through a rounded performance consisting of +1.06 shots off the tee, +3.89 shots on the approach, +0.19 shots around the green, and +2.44 shots on putting.

T11. Justin Rose, Taylor Montgomery, Denny McCarthy (-7): McCarthy sticks his head in TPC Sawgrass every few years. A serious attack was underway on his front nine as he birdied five in his first seven holes to reach 9 under. He played his next 11 holes in 2 over lowlights through a double bogey on the par-5 11th (the easiest hole on the course).

T14. Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Patrick Cantlay, VIktor Hovland, Collin Morikawa, Jason Day and six others (-6): After nearly missing the cut, Spieth made the most of his moving day with a bogey free 66. Without that middle section of his second round, the three-time major champion would be in a much better position, but he still thinks he has a chance . He placed third in shots won from tee to green on Saturday and outside the top 50 in shots scored on putts on Saturday. So if the putter comes alive, maybe it will prove right.

“I want the toughest conditions when you’re behind because you have very little to lose and a lot to win,” said Spieth. “So I’m going to keep that attitude tomorrow no matter where I’m at because I imagine I’ll be back at least six or seven.”

T26. Max Homa, Hideki Matsuyama, Tyrrell Hatton, Tony Finau and five others (-5): Matsuyama is struggling with some injuries at the start of 2023 and perhaps his Bogey Free 67 in Round 3 will prove to be a turning point in his year. He drove the ball quite well for the first three days but has yet to figure out the approach play. That’s been Matsuyama’s bread and butter throughout his career, so you’d think it would bounce back at some point and hopefully before the Masters, where he always seems to thrive.

T35. Cameron Young, Russell Henley, Taylor Pendrith and five others (-4): Young flipped in 30 and felt like he had left punches out there. He failed to convert any of his three Eagle opportunities – including one from 6 feet at No. 12 – and lost shots to the field on the greens. It seemed like he was off and running, and even more so when he got to 7 under with a birdie on the par 2 par 5 (his 11th hole). He stumbled on homecoming with three bogeys in his last seven holes and carded the high score in his three-ball between himself, Spieth and Homa.

Newly signed QB Derek Carr looks forward to leading ‘explosive’ Saints offense – NFL.com

New Orleans has addressed its biggest off-season need with the signing of Carr. The Saints offense, one loaded with talent in the skill positions, struggled hard to score due to their quarterback limitations and culminated in a 7-10 record despite boasting a top-five defense.

Carr expressed his excitement at leading an “explosive” offense with several key elements already in place, and having Saints’ Michael Thomas prevalent was another component that drew him to New Orleans.

“The first time I spoke to him on the phone, I guess he didn’t want me to stop,” said Carr, who also revealed his conversations with Saints greats Drew Brees and Archie Manning before making his decision. “I really enjoyed speaking to him. I told Mickey (Loomis) that you talk to Mike Thomas and you feel like you can face the world. and I was like, ‘I love this guy; he’s so competitive and I think the energy he brings makes it a very exciting time to throw football at him. So when he started recruiting, he talked to me and all that, he didn’t even try to recruit me, he said, “When do we go to work? We’re wasting time.” And I thought I felt the same way, but we’re going to make it, and I think our relationship has grown through that process and I’m looking forward to strengthening it.

Another factor for Carr was the current construct of the Saints defense, a unit that recently knocked out the QB in Week 8 last season.

“One thing for me when I’m making that decision, you know, all you can do is look at past resumes,” Carr said. “But once I knew when you sign with a team, neither the stats nor anything in the past matters. At the moment we don’t have any leaderboards or wins. The most important thing for me was the character of the men in the room, not really the ranking and stuff like that. When I speak to the defense attorneys here, I have known many of them for many years, but they are grown men. They know how to deal with successes and hard times. They compete in everything they do and last year when I would say we (Raiders) but you guys are going to punch us in the face here in the Super Dome.

“You can feel the physicality that they played with. You can feel the energy, the brotherhood, you can feel these things and I was so upset after the game, excuse my language, but I was like, ‘Wow.’ What an opportunity to make this one of my decisions now. But again, the leaderboards and stats, they would be the first to tell you that none of these things matter. Anything I’ve done in the past or they’ve done. What’s been done in the past doesn’t matter, it will be what we’re going to do.” The main thing for me was the character and the kind of men who were in this dressing room are, and the type of men was what was so intriguing to me. They are grown men. Like I said, the physicality they played with and the style of play that I know DA (Dennis Allen) preaches, that was something that got me fired up.

Exit of Raiders lit fire in new Saints QB Derek

Exit of Raiders ‘lit fire’ in new Saints QB Derek Carr – ESPN

Katherine TerrellESPN Staff Writer4:53 PM ET7 Minute Read

Stephen A. isn’t impressed with the Saints’ signing of Derek Carr

Stephen A. Smith says Derek Carr, who has agreed to a contract with the New Orleans Saints, has yet to prove he’s worth the hype.

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana — New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr is ready to reinvent himself.

The Saints introduced Carr in a 45-minute press conference on Saturday. Carr sat next to Saints coach Dennis Allen, in the presence of his family and the Saints front office. He opened up about his nine-year tenure with the Las Vegas Raiders, how the Saints convinced him to join their team, and what’s next.

What’s next could include throwing passes to wide receiver Michael Thomas.

Thomas and the Saints looked like they could be headed for a split after restructuring his deal in January. But Carr, who spoke extensively with Thomas during the free agency process, spoke as if he expected to be a teammate for the 2019 Offensive Player of the Year.

Carr said he and Thomas became close because of their conversations on the phone. After one of those conversations, he even told Saints general manager Mickey Loomis that he felt the couple could “go out there and face the world.”

He added, “When he started recruiting and talking to me, he wasn’t even trying to recruit me, he was just like, ‘When do we go to work? We’re wasting time, time is ticking.’ I said, ‘Dude, I feel the same way. We’re gonna make it.’ But I think our relationship has grown through the process and I look forward to hopefully making that relationship even stronger.”

Carr will also play with Saints tight end Juwan Johnson, a restricted free agent who scored seven touchdowns for the Saints in 2022. The team announced on Saturday that they had signed him to a new two-year deal.

But the breakup with the Raiders wasn’t an easy process for Carr.

“It’s hard because I love so many people there. At the same time, it’s a breath of fresh air,” he said.

Carr admitted he would be lying if he tried to say he didn’t have a chip on his shoulder after things ended when he resigned from the team for the final two games of the season due to an inevitable parting of ways.

That ending, he said, sparked the competitive edge in him. He failed to promise to be former Saints quarterback Drew Brees, who was one of the former players, along with Peyton and Archie Manning, who guided him through the decision-making process.

Carr couldn’t promise winnings either, but he said he could promise he’d give everything he had.

“I just have to come in and show my work ethic and really prove it again. … I didn’t plan or dream of it ending like this. That’s for sure,” he said. “I understood the business side of it and why things happened, all of that. I mean, I get it. But it hurt. For me as a competitor, I wanted to finish with my teammates. … It lit a fire in me that I’ve always had, but it just made it hot. It gave me this excitement.

He also thanked the Raiders for picking him in the second round of the 2014 draft.

“I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t say thank you,” Carr said. “I had nine great years there, a lot of great memories, a lot of hard times, a lot of fun times, a lot of kids since those days. And Mr. Davis and the Raiders organization, thank you. If they see that, I have to tell them something, because without him I wouldn’t be there.”

Carr made it clear he was ready to move forward after a free agency process that spanned nearly a month following his Feb. 14 release from the Raiders. Allen joked Saturday that Carr makes decisions faster on the field than off the field.

“He took way too long with the process. But of course we’re glad we have him,” Allen said with a smile.

The New York Jets were one of the other teams involved in the process, and the Carolina Panthers, who recently traded to secure the #1 pick in the 2023 draft, were another.

But the Saints already had an edge over the competition because of Carr’s long-standing relationship with Allen, who coached the Raiders when they took Carr in the second round of the 2014 draft. Allen also made the decision to start Carr as a rookie.

Despite Allen being fired four games this season, the two have maintained a relationship since those days.

“DA how I feel about this man, hopefully sitting here will tell me what I think about him and the opportunity,” Carr said Saturday. “You gave me my first opportunity, every time we’ve played you all since we weren’t on the same team I’ve always said thank you. Even in the press conference before this game [last fall], I would say I’ve always been grateful to DA for giving me my chance. He gave me the keys to an organization to be quarterback for nine years. … We’re just getting started and all of that is in the past.”

Allen and the Saints wouldn’t take no for an answer. The Saints were the first team to approach Carr once the Raiders gave him permission to seek a potential trade, and they were by far the most persistent, he said.

Carr said his phone would “explode” daily with ongoing texts and calls from the Saints, who were determined to make him their future quarterback.

“I don’t think it’s just a seasoned quarterback. I think it’s the experienced quarterback that we wanted,” Allen said. “I don’t know there was this thing, well, we need to go out there and find an experienced quarterback. We wanted to find the quarterback that we wanted. As I said before, we clearly established that Derek is our #1 target and we [went] out and got him.”

Carr added, “There was never a doubt [their side]. … They made it very clear how they felt. You were honest. They told us the truth about the organization and didn’t try to make anything look like it wasn’t, and I think that meant the most interest. It was just honesty from the start. And there were other teams saying certain things and saying similar things and so on. But at the end of the day they came out first, they attempted a trade, all those things and you start to weigh that, feel so wanted, again, it’s nice that someone sees the value of what they can possibly do to theirs organization, to their city, to their dressing room.”

The Saints were the only team to meet with Carr while he was still a member of the Raiders, hosting him and his wife in New Orleans for two days in early February. A deal ultimately fell through after Carr, who had a no-trade clause in his deal with the Raiders, vetoed it.

But a trade is actually closer than people think, he said on Saturday.

“I was very willing to accept a trade,” he said. “But I could only speak to one team. I was only given permission to speak to one team. As much as I love and respect these guys, Dave and Josh at the Raiders, how do I make that decision when it’s the only time in my career that I’ve been or could be free? There’s no way I can make that decision without being able to talk to other people. But I almost made the decision anyway. I felt so much love here, I still almost made it.

“But at the end of the day, I just felt like knowing that when I was sitting here, I wanted to be able to look my kids in the eye, look my wife in the eye, and know that I was everything “I asked every question, I went through every process to make sure I was trying to make the best decision for our family, for us together. So I wasn’t closed off about anything about what It might be shocking to some people, but I wasn’t closed, I was willing to work, but I could only talk to the saints, but it worked.

Ultimately, Carr signed his four-year contract on Saturday. Sources told ESPN that the contract could potentially be worth up to $150 million and include up to $100 million in guarantees. The deal is unlikely to become official until free agency begins next week, as the Saints still have several steps to take to meet the 2023 salary cap. They also have a decision to make about former starting quarterback Jameis Winston, who could become a free agent with Carr’s signing.

The deal also brings him to a reunion with the man who helped him come full circle.

“I think that’s how we ended the call when Derek called me Sunday night and said he wanted to come down here and be a quarterback,” Allen said. “When we hung up, we were like, ‘Hey, it’s time for us to finish what we started.’ So I think it’s a pretty cool deal.”

Paco Bazan assures that the Alianza Lima squad is there

Alianza Lima will take part in the Copa Libertadores this 2023 season. The Blue-Whites could fall into an accessible group or a very complicated one, depending on their luck in the draw. The Victorian team will only debut in international competition at the beginning of April and have brought luxurious reinforcements such as Christian Cueva and Carlos Zambrano with them. The squad assembled this year delights all of its fans, but not “Paco” Bazán.

The journalist and sports presenter published a strong verdict against the intimate team, assuring that the current Alianza Lima players are there to score two points in the Copa Libertadores.

Bazán initially said that “Chicho” Salas was unknown as a DT for this type of challenge. However, he pointed out that if the strategist does well internationally, “a quality Peruvian coach will make his way”.

“Today, Alianza Lima has a squad to get at least two points in the Copa Libertadores,” said “Paco” Bazán on the YouTube show “Erick & Gonzalo”. What was said generated a smile in Osores and support from Núñez.

The former goalkeeper later recalled the dry spell of 29 games without a win in the Copa Libertadores that Alianza Lima has had since 2012.

“It’s been 12 years since we haven’t won a Copa Libertadores game. They’re the worst team in the history of the tournament. They’re worse than Deportivo Táchira,” said the TV presenter.

Source Eyeing Rodgers Jets Release 131M To Cap Room

Source: Eyeing Rodgers, Jets Release $13.1M To Cap Room – ESPN

Rich CiminiESPN Staff Writer4:36 PM ET2 Minute Read

FLORHAM PARK, NJ — The New York Jets have prepared for free agency and the possible addition of quarterback Aaron Rodgers, creating $13.1 million in salary caps by restructuring three veteran contracts.

They have revised the contracts of three players from their 2022 free-agent class – guard Sheeten Tomlinson, cornerback DJ Reed and tight end Tyler Conklin, a source told ESPN’s Field Yates on Saturday.

Earlier, the Jets reshuffled the tight end of CJ Uzomah – another member of the 2022 class – and fired wide receiver Braxton Berrios.

All in all, the cap savings total more than $21 million. The Jets had to make the moves because they were just over the $224.8 million ceiling. Teams must meet the caps by March 15, the start of the new league year.

And now they’re waiting for Rodgers to make a decision about his future. He can request a trade with the Jets, retire, or return to the Green Bay Packers, which seems unlikely.

Jets Brass, including owner Woody Johnson, flew to Southern California on Tuesday to meet with Rodgers. On Friday, Packers President Mark Murphy confirmed they had given the Jets permission to speak with the four-time MVP.

Both the Jets and Packers want a fix by the time free agency begins. The statutory manipulation period begins on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Jets could make more trains. Pro Bowl linebacker CJ Mosley ($21.5 million) is a candidate for a contract reshuffle. Wide receiver Corey Davis ($11.2 million) and safety Jordan Whitehead ($10.2 million) could be cap casualties.

To revise the contracts with Tomlinson, Reed and Conklin, the Jets simply converted the 2023 base salaries into signing bonuses and spread the amount over the final two years of the contract. No invalid years were added. Each player is under contract until 2024.

Alpine Ski World Cup Mikaela Shiffrin becomes the most successful

Alpine Ski World Cup: Mikaela Shiffrin becomes the most successful of all time

(Sportcom) – It’s done, the American Mikaela Shiffrin is the most successful athlete of all time in the Alpine Ski World Cup with 87 victories. On Saturday in Äre, in the country of the former record holder, the Swede Ingemar Stenmark, Shiffrin rewrote the book of records by taking first place in the slalom, where Laurence St-Germain (+1.59s) signed a fifth place. A peak for her in this discipline in the World Cup.

When Shiffrin’s win was confirmed, the winner didn’t explode with joy. Instead, she settled into a small sphere to gather herself and act out her emotions before Switzerland’s Wendy Holdener (+0.92s) and Sweden’s Anna Swenn Larsson (+0.95s) ran towards her in second and third to congratulate her .

St-Germain started the World Cup for the first time as reigning world champion in fifth place after the first round, 1.49 seconds behind Shiffrin.

“I’m super happy with my performance today (Saturday), especially my second run. I made a little more mistakes than in the first one, but my attitude was more like that of the World Cup,” admitted the skier from Saint-Ferréol-les-Neiges, adding that she was more offensive in his second run. “I knew that if I did the same things and had the same feelings (like I do at the World Championships), I would get a good result.

Invited to comment on the American’s record, the Quebec native felt privileged to be front row.

“It’s really impressive and we’ve been waiting for this for a long time. For my part, I’m just happy that I was able to be there the day she broke the record. It was really moving and impressive to see the race she drove today to achieve that record.”

For her part, Shiffrin seemed more shocked than overjoyed.

“My brother and sister-in-law are here and I didn’t know they were coming, which makes it even more special. The best feeling is to drive in the second run. Of course you want to win, you’re ahead and you want to be smart, but you also want to be fast. I did exactly what I wanted, so it’s amazing!” Shiffrin commented on the FIS (International Ski Federation) microphone, adding to his words of thanks to his entire support team.

The other Canadian, Ali Nullmeyer, finished 22nd (+3.86s).

As before, or almost

Being world champion doesn’t change the world, except… St-Germain no longer goes unnoticed at the bottom of the slopes. We speak to her more often than before and she grants Eurosport an interview she’s never done before in the great white circus. She says some people asked her if she was happy with her fifth place finish after Saturday’s race.

“This is my second best result ever! I don’t expect to win every race,” the athlete confirms with a laugh.

However, her surprise win at the World Championships wasn’t what prompted her to be more consistent than ever in the two heats she lacked earlier in the season. The trigger is in the Czech Spindleruv Mlyn that it happened when she had signed a seventh place.

“That’s when I understood what I was missing and it was clear what I had to work on to be ready for the World Cup.”

Her brief return to Quebec, marked by a media tour, exams at the Polytechnique Montreal and a stint as a course setter on the icy courses of a Nor-Am Cup in Mont-Tremblant, didn’t dampen her preparation for the end of the calendar, either when she feels that fatigue is beginning to dawn.

“I knew I was still a good skier and I’m still on the way. What stressed me out today wasn’t so much the result as implementing what I did in terms of technique and tactics on the worlds.

For the first time this season, Laurence St-Germain has had two good races in a row. Next Saturday she will have the opportunity to continue this threesome at the World Cup finals in Soldeu in the Principality of Andorra.

“This race is often a very icy mega pitch but I’ve improved this year so I think I can get a good result too. It will be fun to celebrate the end of the season and in particular Marie-Michèle Gagnon who will be making her last run (before retirement),” St-Germain concluded.
