For four teams, the clock keeps ticking towards midnight threat level.

Three weeks after the end of the regular season, no coaches were hired in Denver, Indianapolis, Arizona or Houston. Former Saints coach Sean Payton has a role in three of those locations.

Payton appeared on the FOX NFL kickoff show and broadly addressed his candidacy.

“It’s been a busy week, a great week,” Payton said. “We had the opportunity to visit many great owners and many outstanding organizations. You’re obviously looking for a reboot.

“I think with the way the hiring process for coaches has changed this year, we see it taking a little longer for these clubs. And I think there’s more pressure on everyone reporting on it. And I think it’s a good thing because they allow teams to find the right candidates.

“I think in the next week we will know a lot more. . . . There are a handful of things that are still happening for these coaches and for me.”

A week can be a lifetime when it comes to coaching searches. The Panthers signed their lease three days ago.

Payton did not address the Washington Post’s report that he has concerns about a potential power struggle with a member of the Broncos’ ownership. He had previously refuted it on Twitter.

It continues to be one of the strangest reports of the week, something Payton would have no reason to lick. Even if he has concerns, it’s still important to have maximum options and leverage. Preemptively burning a bridge to Denver makes no sense.

Within the next week the whole situation will make more sense. That’s what Payton thinks and is right in the middle of 75 percent of current search queries.

Heres what Shanahan showed the 49ers before they flew to

Here’s what Shanahan showed the 49ers before they flew to Philly

Not much extra motivation is needed at this point in the NFL season.

Win against the top-ranked Eagles in Philadelphia on Sunday and the San Francisco 49ers travel to the Super Bowl to win their first Lombardi Trophy in nearly three decades. Losing and going home a game late for the second year in a row – last year the Niners lost to the Los Angeles Rams in LA and then two weeks later watched them win it all against the Bengals.

But San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan still found the perfect extra motivation on Friday before the 49ers boarded the team plane and flew to Philly.

“We always do small things,” he said said assembled media when asked how he motivates his team. “Today we watched the 2002 NFC Championship game with the Bucs and Philly. It was great to watch but a bit boring.”

As you’ll recall, the Bucs stunned the Eagles in Philadelphia that game, despite running 33 times for just 45 yards, going 27-10 en route to their first-ever Super Bowl win.

The 49ers need to duplicate the former (beat the Eagles in Philly) if they want a chance at the latter, and they’ll try with a team that doesn’t look too dissimilar to the 2002 Bucs.

The Bucs were 4-point underdogs going into this game against the vaunted Donovan McNabb-led Eagles. Tampa Bay had one of the best defenses in league history, a solid but not spectacular quarterback, and great players (Keyshawn Johnson, Mike Alstott, Mike Pittman).

The 49ers go into Sunday’s NFC title game as 2.5-point underdogs against the Jalen Hurts-led Eagles. With Nick Bosa (18.5 sacks), Mr. Irrelevant at quarterback and a star-studded skill group (Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle), the 49ers have the highest-ranked defense in the league and the all-time guaranteed Defensive Player of the Year).

Oh, and one more really striking resemblance: 49ers general manager John Lynch was on that Bucs team.

“He came into my office just before I was going over it to prepare to show the team,” Shanahan said of Lynch. “He sat down and enjoyed watching it for about 10 seconds, then got up and paced the room without realizing it. I thought, ‘What’s the matter with you right now?’ And he says, ‘Why? What do you mean by that? Oh yeah, that brings back some feelings.'”

The 15-4 Niners face the 15-3 Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on Fox. Kick-off is at 12 noon on Sunday.

College basketball rankings: Alabama maintains high place in top 25 and 1 despite Oklahoma dismissal

top25and1bama.png

CBS Sports graphic

Four teams in the top 5 of the CBS Sports Top 25 And 1 on Saturday morning played on Saturday. Three of them lost – all en route in the final year of the SEC/Big 12 Challenge. The home teams took an 8-2 lead in this event to underline how difficult it can be to win away from home in both leagues.

One of the top 5 teams that lost was Alabama.

The Crimson Tide was beaten in Oklahoma, 93-69, so you may be wondering why Alabama remains No. 2 in the updated top 25 and 1 in Sunday morning’s daily college basketball rankings. fair question. The answer is, I just don’t think anyone other than Purdue No. 1 has a better job than Alabama, even after that 24-point loss to the Sooners. The Crimson Tide are still 18-3 overall, including 8-0 in the SEC, with a 6-3 record in quadrant 1 and zero losses outside of quadrant 1. Virtually every school in the country except Purdue has either fewer Quadrant 1 wins than Alabama and/or more Quad 1 losses than Alabama and/or more non-quadrant 1 losses than Alabama.

Most have all three.

Bottom line, I’ll keep Alabama #2 in the top 25 and #1 until at least two teams I think have better resumes. Again, right now, nobody but Purdue is checking that box. Speaking of Purdue, the Boilermakers could probably lose to Michigan State on Sunday and still have the best resume in the sport, which is my way of saying I’d probably keep Purdue #1 in the top 25 and #1 Monday morning even if the Boilermakers lose to Michigan State just as I kept Alabama 2nd in the top 25 and 1st Sunday morning even after the Crimson Tide lost to Oklahoma.

Michigan State at Purdue will tip at 12:15 p.m. ET. You can see it on CBS.

Lakers troubles with office come to a head after crucial

Lakers troubles with office come to a head after crucial no-call in Boston: ‘We’ve been cheated’

BOSTON — LeBron James sat in front of his locker, knees encased in ice, staring blankly ahead, searching for an answer to a problem that has plagued him for weeks, if not all season.

“I don’t understand,” James repeated over and over again after the Los Angeles Lakers lost 125-121 in overtime to the Boston Celtics at TD Garden on Saturday.

James’ frustration with the way he is being officiated this season has been simmering for a few weeks. In the seconds after regulation time ended against the Celtics, it broke out on one of the biggest stages of the regular season: a prime-time matchup between the league’s closest rivals.

With four seconds remaining and a tie at 105, James drove past Malcolm Brogdon and easily got to the edge. As James extended his left arm for a layup, Jayson Tatum turned and swiped down, slapping James’ arm and causing him to miss the try at point-blank range as time ran out.

To James’ disbelief, there was no whistle.

He immediately stomped around and gestured with his left arm to emphasize where the contact had occurred. James then bounced around in an uncharacteristic display of emotion. As his frustration got the better of him, he collapsed on the floor and struggled to contain his anger.

“You saw my reaction‘ James said matter-of-factly when asked about his reaction to the no-call.

Patrick Beverley, who is proud to have his teammates’ backs, took a nearby baseline photographer’s camera and showed the image to the referee, causing a technical foul before overtime even started and igniting a chain of memes.

In a post-game pool report, Crew Chief Eric Lewis admitted the umpiring crew missed Tatum’s contact on James’ layup attempt.

“There was contact,” Lewis said. “Back then, during the game, we didn’t see a foul. The crew missed the play.”

Anthony Davis, who also spoke to the media outside his locker a few yards from James, sounded out about the no-call and general conduct of office.

“[Tatum]fouled him,” Davis said. “He fouled him. Clearly. Clearly. They’re cops—. … It’s unacceptable. And I guarantee that nothing will happen to the referees. We got scammed tonight, honestly. It’s a blatant foul. … It’s unacceptable, to be honest. The referees were bad. You were bad tonight.”

The dressing room scene after the game was tense and desperate. The players cleared up quickly. Each conversation included questioning and criticizing final possession and why umpires can’t be severely penalized for missing a call that costs a team a game.

Beverly and Russell Westbrook declined to speak to the media after the game.

Even Lakers coach Darvin Ham, who is usually judged by his analysis of officiating, was visibly disappointed when he spoke.

“As much as you try not to put it on the board, it’s getting harder and harder,” Ham said.

The Lakers have had several recent losses where critical crunch-time decisions didn’t go in their favor, including to Dallas, Philadelphia and Sacramento.

In their double loss to the Mavericks, James was fouled by Christian Wood in a similar play at the end of first overtime, but the foul was not called.

If those calls had gone correctly in the Lakers’ favor, as well as final possession against the Celtics, the 23-27 Lakers, who are 13th in the West, would likely be 27-23 and fourth in the conference.

“I watch basketball every day,” James said. “I watch games every day. And I don’t see it happening to anyone. It’s just weird.”

The Celtics (39 free throw attempts) shot almost twice as many free throws as the Lakers (20). James attempted just six free throws, nearly half that of Tatum (12) and Jaylen Brown (11).

“The best player in the world cannot be called,” said Ham. “It is wonderful.”

James, who finished with 41 points in 15-for-30 shooting and almost forced the Lakers to victory, said he doesn’t feel as officiated as other stars.

“It’s a challenge,” James said. “I do not get it. I’m attacking the color like every one of the guys in this league shooting double digit free throws every night and I don’t get it. I do not get it.”

Ham suspected the discrepancy stemmed from James’ playing style, citing Giannis Antetokounmpo and Shaquille O’Neal as players similarly difficult to direct due to their strength, power and physicality.

“He’s a guy who chooses to play right … plays a strong, physical kind of basketball, and just because he doesn’t flop or he doesn’t fail or he doesn’t yell when he shoots the ball like I see a ton of other players do.” , he will be punished for it,” Ham said. “…Those guys who are playing physically and really trying to focus on finishing the games sometimes don’t go in their favor. But then you see other guys whining at every shot or anything they poke… and they’re the ones who get the whistles.

James acknowledged his visceral reaction was due to emotions brewing throughout the season – and irritation from the calls, which seemingly led directly to losses.

“Nah, it’s building up,” James said. “It built up because you guys watched some of the games we lost this year with late game missed calls. We had the opportunity to literally win the game. I’ve had the second to myself over the last few weeks: I had the chance to win a foul against Dallas. K-Nunn recently had an opportunity to tie the game (against Sacramento) when the four-point game is called. I do not understand.”

The Lakers still had a chance to win in overtime, but the Celtics sped out by six points within the first minute as the Lakers were clearly still processing what had just happened.

The emotional transfer was ultimately too much for the group, at least in a hostile street environment against the league’s best team.

“You’re still thinking about that,” Davis said. “To be honest, you shouldn’t even be in this situation. You shouldn’t be working overtime.”

The Lakers have already communicated with the league, but with the tally in office, they’re not sure what the best course of action is going forward.

“I mean, we have different avenues where you can … I think Monty McCutchen, he’s definitely transparent and there are different mechanisms that we have access to where we can raise our concerns and they give good feedback,” said Ham. “But in hindsight, one can only hope it becomes more consistent.”

James said he will not communicate with the league.

“Nah, I won’t go into that,” James said. “Our organization decides they want to do that, it’s cool, but it’s not going to change s-.”

The Lakers are no strangers to heartbreaking losses. They’ve been one of the league’s worst teams in crunch time this season, losing agonizingly about a dozen times. That makes Saturday’s defeat so difficult to accept. They were right there. They led much of the game – and they needed that win badly.

If the Lakers had a better record, perhaps their reaction to the blown call would have been milder. But that’s the kind of loss that can hit the Lakers in April as they battle for playoff and play-in positioning.

Los Angeles was just a foul call away from potentially starting its five-game road trip with a statement win. They faced off against the best team in the NBA for the second time this season.

But instead, they’re looking for explanations as to why so many calls continue to go against them at crucial moments, and await the moment when they finally turn the corner and solidify in the postseason picture.

“Like I told you, we have no room for error,” James said. “And it’s one of the best games we’ve played all year and for it to come down to someone else’s judgment or non-judgment is ridiculous. It is ridiculous.”

How will the League 1 suspension affect the teams set

How will the League 1 suspension affect the teams set to compete in the Copa Libertadores?

The Copa Libertadores starts in less than 10 days and the Peruvian representatives still don’t see any action in League 1.

Uncertainty is growing all around league 1 and clubs are already beginning to voice their concerns. Beyond the broadcast rights conflict is the current season of Peruvian soccer it had to be postponed because of social protests in different parts of the country. Although the organization has scheduled the start of the championship for this weekend; Should that scenario not materialize, teams like Sport Huancayo would suffer a major setback just days after their Copa Libertadores debut.

As is well known, the Red Matador will be the first national representative to intervene in the continental competition next February 7th. Beyond the start of local competition, the team led by Mifflin Bermúdez would achieve their international commitment with just one game played. while his rival Nacional de Paraguay has already taken on his country’s First Division.

For their part, Sporting Cristal is also focused on making a good Libertadores. The cast, led by Tiago Nunes, will debut the second round on February 22nd and arrive with two or three shoot comparisons at best. Undoubtedly an unfortunate scenario for the Rimenses who are keen to reach the group stage.

Let’s remember that Melgar is coming off a great season in the last Copa Sudamericana and hopes to repeat what was achieved in the top tournament at South American club level. Meanwhile, Alianza Lima is the current two-time Peruvian soccer champion and there are high expectations among his fans for his cup participation.

When does League 1 start?

Although the start of the inaugural tournament had to be postponed due to social protests in different parts of the country, the organization mentioned that the ball will roll on February 3 with the third day.

Yes, Aaron Rodgers trade remains open

Detroit Lions vs. Green Bay Packers

Getty Images

We know that the Infobots have a weekly quota to fulfill. But does it really count towards the quota if they report the same thing every week?

Last week, ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter told the world that a trade in quarterback Aaron Rodgers would be a “real possibility.” This week, Schefter says a Rodgers trade “remains an option.”

Apparently this will be the constant report until a trade happens or doesn’t happen.

It’s hard to break much new ground with Rodgers, as most of the real news comes straight from the mouth of the ayahuasca drinker. He made it clear 12 days ago that he might want to play and that he might not want to play in Green Bay. That makes a trade (wait for it) a “real possibility.”

Five days ago, Rodgers complained about trade talks that sparked his own comments, indicating that none of it matters until he decides to play in 2023.

Rodgers has named the veterans whose presence in Green Bay is important to him. He has made it clear that he does not want to be part of a rebuild.

We know there’s value in playing the hits. But for the folks tasked with adding new tunes to the rotation, it’s odd to see them reporting the same thing over and over again. Especially if it’s just a repackaging of what Rodgers already said.

So why am I writing about this? Good question. I honestly do not know. Most importantly, I felt compelled to point out that reporting the same non-news stuff over and over again is more than a little ridiculous.

Yes, trading with Aaron Rodgers remains possible. We don’t need an insider telling us something that all outsiders know.

The real question is the timeline. When will Rodgers decide if he even wants to play in 2023? Then when will he know enough about whether the Packers will bring enough people back to entice him to stay? And if he decides not to stay, when will trade talks start?

As we have learned in past offseason cycles, a trade can be agreed at any time. Two years ago tomorrow, the Rams and Lions struck a deal that flipped Jared Goff (plus two first-round picks and one third-round pick) for Matthew Stafford.

In this case it will obviously take some time. Step one, Rodgers must choose to play. Step two, he has to decide if he’s going to play for the Packers. Step three, if he wants to play somewhere else, he has to figure out where — and deals have to be made between the Packers and the new team and Rodgers and the new team.

Timing becomes critical for the team Rodgers can join. If this team doesn’t get Rodgers, they need to move on to someone else before it’s too late. These wheels start turning well before the start of the new league year.

For example, the Raiders must have an unofficial deal for quarterback Derek Carr by Feb. 15 or they’re stuck with full $40.4 million guarantees for a man they no longer want. What if a team interested in Carr is also interested in Rodgers?

When this team makes a move for Carr, it closes a door on Rodgers. If that team waits, Carr could end up elsewhere before it’s known if Rodgers will be available.

So forget that a trade is possible. Rodgers and the Packers must find out from ASAFP if they will continue a relationship that dates back to 2005. The sooner they know, the sooner trade talks can begin—and the sooner trade talks can be completed.

With all the questions about a potential Aaron Rodgers trade that everyone knows are possible, the sooner these decisions are made, the better.

WNBA Free Agency Candace Parker lands Aces as two time MVP

WNBA Free Agency: Candace Parker lands Aces as two-time MVP leaves Sky after two seasons

WNBA star Candace Parker announced on social media Saturday that she has signed with the Las Vegas Aces as an unrestricted free agent. Parker, who has played on Chicago Sky for the past two seasons, announced her decision in a lengthy Instagram post. Parker said she wanted to play somewhere closer to her wife and children, who live on the west coast. That made the Aces an ideal landing spot for Parker as she chased her third WNBA title.

“I need to be there for my daughter, my son and my wife,” Parker wrote on Instagram. “I can’t be without her part of the season when Lailaa is at school and I won’t miss her volleyball games or school dances just because they’re far away. Lailaa starts high school in August and I need to be there for her. like she was there for me

“After evaluating the landscape with my family, we decided that the Las Vegas Aces was the right organization for us at this point in our lives.”

Parker also thanked Sky and the entire city of Chicago for their support during their time there.

“I am forever grateful to everyone in Chicago – our fans, teammates, coaches and owners,” Parker wrote. “But more than the last two seasons, I am grateful to the city I grew up in, the childhood friends I still have to this day, the teachers I still learn from and the moments that will stay with me forever will be in my heart.”

Parker just wrapped up her 15th WNBA season and proved she’s got plenty of fuel in her tank. Parker averaged 13.2 points, 8.6 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game.

Parker won a WNBA championship with Sky in 2021 and led the team to a semifinal in 2022 before being eliminated by the Connecticut Sun. Now Parker joins the defending WNBA champion in his pursuit of another ring.

Parker is joining an organization that has recently been criticized by former Aces star Dearica Hamby, who says the team’s management was “unprofessional” and “unethical” towards her after she announced her second pregnancy in September. The Aces traded Hamby for the Sparks hours before she made those allegations on social media. The WNBA Players Association has announced it will investigate the Aces over their treatment of Hamby.
